Very very very spoilery of future chapters:
SPOILER
Doesn’t he though? He writes down Ray Penber, with the text that makes him write down the others. But Ray gets written in by Light to make the rest happen.

Relatable
Those are not the kanji you’re looking for
I misremembered, also with = (lol).
Understandable though, since it is a very special scenario
That’s right, thanks for reminding me. Which means that katakana wouldn’t have worked (unless Light didn’t think to try it). Which also probably means that any name needs to be written in its native language. What if he wants to target someone from Korea, or India, or Greece? What if he gets the stroke order wrong? So many questions. And what about names of people who are of dual nationality? Would either of their languages work? (Yes I’m overthinking it, but it’s fun).
I think it only means, recognizable as that person’s actual name (not sure if “by that person himself”, or not).
And, yeah - this future spoiler also with =
Not sure if this is confirmed. Perhaps Light really don’t have to write that ナンパ’s name with different Kanji’s.
I think it’s fair to say, that the mangaka Tsugumi Ooba and Takeshi Obata didn’t necessarily fill in all the spaces for questions like this.
Somehow, I completely overlooked the issue when watching the anime when it aired.
But yeah, you could also assume that a child using the death note, who still hasn’t mastered that many kanji, couldn’t really kill that many people in Japan, since kanji used in names are usually quite complex. XD And just using kana doesn’t work, unless the name IS in kana. ^^
I wonder what version of my name would work
The name I had from 0-19, the version I had from 19-30, or the one I have now…
The versions in short:
Name 1, Middle name (mothers last name), Fathers Last name
Name 1 Name 2, Mother Last name
Name 2, Mothers Last name
Have tried changing once more, to Name 2 + new selfmade last name (was asked to wait 10 years since last change, will try again, and in many ways already see it as my more correct name =P Just not legally yet )
Would only one of them work, or could possibly all of them work?
I think as far as the Death Note goes, you’re invincible!
This is another good example and an issue as most people who marry end up changing their last name. Mostly women, but also men at times. So, yeah, which is the name that could kill you?
I’ve had this thought before, but let’s put it like this: if you keep registering for a name change with the authorities, wouldn’t you become unkillable with the Death Note. There’s the pending bureaucracy of government officials going about their work and during that time, which is your actual name??
Name changes doesn’t happen on a dime. It takes time before they’re registered officially.
But is it the official name or the name you have for yourself that matters???
Either invincible or very vulnerable =P
Since they were my real proper name, they could potentially still work
That’s a super good point, actually. What if one doesn’t associate a specific name with oneself?
I mean, the eyes of a death god see a name for every person so there is a fair chance Ryuk or any of his comrades encountered already a person who did not have a name. Unless, the first given name counts and the others are not valid.
Speaking of Raito trying out different names, there is a non-zero chance he accidentally killed several people via heart attacks when practicing his spelling skills . Though the rule in the Note states that one has to see/portray the face of the person one wants to eliminate while writing the name down.
I know how long a name will continue to haunt you after a change. I still see my dead name ever so often, in hard to change places… PayPal I have officially changed, yet when logging on it say “logging on Deadname” -_-
So makes sense if the given name is the one they see, you can’t escape it
The writer has to imagine the face as well as intent to kill, so zero chance to kill the unintended.
Also, the rules aren’t really in the Note, but only in the manga extra pages (otherwise Light doesn’t really have to test). perhaps some are (see Page 12) also How To Use It VI
said he really had to test.
I’m more of the idea that it’s the officially registered name that matters.
Names being “registered” hasn’t always been the case in human history, but defo it’s pretty ubiquitous now. Maybe the Death Note just latches onto how human culture is organized and works in that context? it makes some sense.
Maybe it takes a living name for a shinigami to take away.
Not sure I follow you.
In that is a name you actually live with and when a shinigami takes your life (plus adds lifespan their total) they also take your name with means of the death note.
Why would you loose your name?? What purpose would it serve?
