Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the durtles of war

I am making another attempt at learning this blasted language, after several earlier, wildly unsuccessful attempts in the past. I am committed this time, until the end of 2027 or until I lose interest, whichever occurs first, to taking a hard swing at learning Japanese.

My motivation is not for work, for living in Japan, or even travelling to Japan on vacation. And not for anime or manga. Nope, I just feel the need for a quest.

And my quest is to complete the following by the end of 2027:

  • Wanikani - level 60 - I signed up recently for the Artemis III challenge (Level 60 by December 14, 2027). I am currently on level 5. I had worked up to level 10 in the past, but reset back to level 1 in October, 2025. So I am basically re-learning rather than learning right now.

  • Mango Languages Japanese. I have completed Unit 1 and most of Unit 2 (of five units).

  • Memrise Japanese - complete all the scenarios (I think 276). I have completed the first seven scenarios.

  • Duolingo - yeah, yeah, I know. But I am a long-time user of Duolingo for other languages and enjoy using it. Currently working on Section 1 (of a total of 6), unit 5.

  • Pimsleur - there are five levels of 30 units each, a total of 150 units (each around 30 minutes). So, basically an incalculable number of hours of lessons.

  • Genki 1 - I had worked through the first couple of chapters previously.

T-24 months

Target date of December 14, 2027 is 24 months away, for completion of level 60 (and all related vocabulary), and completion of as much of the rest of my identified learning resources as possible.

In addition to the materials in my first post, I hope to include Michel Thomas Method, Japanese for Beginners audio course (8 CDs, roughly 8 hours) and the Cure Dolly Organic Japanese youtube videos in the Japanese From Scratch course (93 videos) - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLg9uYxuZf8x_A-vcqqyOFZu06WlhnypWj. I had worked in the past through most of the Michel Thomas course, though I doubt much stuck), and the first few interesting Cure Dolly videos.

WaniKani - I am now on level 6. To get completed (not including burning of learned items) by December 2027, I figure I will need to keep a pace of an average of 13 new units per day, and level completion average within 12 days. So far, I am exceeding those targets, with an overall accuracy rate of 94.15% (though that will drop, as I am still essentially re-learning material.

Current status of everything else:

  • Mango - I love Mango Languages. Completed Unit 1, Chapter 3, lesson 1.
  • Memrise - finding this challenging, and it is taking forever for some phrases to stick. Up the first 9 scenarios
  • Duolingo - completed Section 2, unit 1. Still refreshing lessons I had done in the past, taking them to legendary status.
  • Genki 1 - completed the Greetings unit and Chapter 1 and the related ToKini Andy youtube video. Working from the 2nd edition as that is what I had on hand, rather than the current 3rd edition.
  • Cure Dolly - I refreshed videos 1-3.
  • Pimsleur and Michel Thomas – deferring until later.
