Confusion with translation

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to work my way thought reading https://www.wasabi-jpn.com/japanese-lessons/japanese-graded-readers-jlpt-n4-the-restaurant-that-has-many-orders/

Surprisingly I am doing quite well and can get the main meaning most of the time however one sentence is bugging me…

I translated この山は変だ as “This mountain is strange” but they translated as “This mountain looks strange”. Where does the “look” come from? Is it just up to the translator to make this up or am I missing something?

Thanks

It seems normal to assume that a mountain’s appearance would be what you’re commenting on there, unless there’s some other context to suggest otherwise.

Ahh, that make since somehow after you said it because why would a mountain just be strange… I guess if it was upside down, but then that would of been mentioned in the story.

Thanks
