I’m back again. Today is 装い - from level 33 meaning attire/dress/garb.
This isn’t sticking for me for the same reasons 災い and 勢い weren’t sticking for me - it’s a collection of syllables that I wouldn’t naturally say, so my brain isn’t jumping to it. They changed 災い and 勢い from a thread complaining about them. I’ve basically never said “Oi” in organic conversation to anybody ever. I know it’s a word and I’ve seen it in writing, but it’s not my speaking style to say both “yo” and “oh” or “oi” in the start of a sentence like that.
I’ll keep thinking on how I want to change this, but just putting this here because I keep forgetting after my reviews are done.

How about 他所 + 覆う (though there are too many o), and of course there is also 装う.
I don’t have an idea yet about the other two, but I feel they are common and unique enough…

Today I learned 他所 isn’t たしょ anymore. I think I’ll resurrect it, and also use it as my mnemonic for 装い

Ok going with what @polv suggested and I’ll tweak it and how about this:
You go to another place 他所 and pretend 装う you’re a king 王 for that you need a regal attire 装い

Think of Mrs Chou putting on shoes, you look at the shoes and they are white vans, think of Damn Daniel with the white vans, that you just have to laugh out loud like a maniac HA HA HA

I really need to change their mnemonics and I haven’t bothered dealing with it so I’ll do this with y’all otherwise I’ll forget about it again.
I think in both cases the problem for me is the way wanikani break down the radicals, with 結 I would break it down into three radicals instead of two because I can build a better storyline for the mnemonic

Now to the nastier one, 絡 entangle would have been so much easier if entangle disney movie was about Rakunzel, don’t you think? Rakunzel Rakunzel let down your hair¡ Now to the actually using the radicals option -
You put all of your thread on the rack らく you might as well kiss it goodbye, now it is completely entangled
Hopefully it will help me get rid of those leeches which were created by me not giving them the attention they deserved.

Finished writing this down and went to do my reviews, last review item was 結, the horror, still had to pause and think, and I’m pretty sure that had I not written about it I would have failed it again.

About the radicals, it may be associated with 結婚 or 縁結び. That is 大吉.
About the meaning and sound, maybe think about 結論 or 結局. There is also 結う.
絡
About the meaning and sound, I would think about 籠絡 or 絡む. Though more common words bearing this Kanji would be 連絡 or 脈絡. It can’t be helped that this Kanji is less common than the other one.
About the radicals, I see 各々 and then お客さん. So, a string (糸) to keep people at bay somewhere, but not planning for the (happy) ending.

I know this as a spoken word but the written one I just started drilling it in iKnow, so hopefully that would help some. the rest is way beyond my level for the time being, so perhaps it is also a case of not enough exposure but there’s only so much I can do.
This one I have no problem with, because of its reading but it doesn’t help me much with the single kanji. I don’t know what caused this but lately I find it really hard to recognize single kanji that I can recognize just fine in a sentence. Perhaps the fact that I am reading so much influenced the way my brain treats a single kanji out of context. I failed some really basic burns that way. Not a big deal, might be some kind of adjusting period.
This is one of the collateral damage of not recognizing/remembering those two kanji.
Sometimes part of the problem is that nothing about a kanji its sound and the mnemonic clicks with me because I fail to attach it to anything that will make it meaningful, so it just evaporates. The rate of this happening is not that high so I’m ok with it.
But thank you for the examples, learned some new words and it made me think about tie vs entangle in a more focused way, so hopefully they will stop sucking my blood soon…

You mean your problem with 絡 is you are falling it 各回 ?
If you can recall this 糸, then you may recall that 絡 is 糸 and 各.
(I don’t usually use mnemonics, but this time it imposed itself to my mind)

In this case my problem was I only knew 各 as a radical, so each time I saw it I had no idea it has a real meaning that would have made way more sense. I don’t check the Found in kanji part when I learn the radicals ‘cause it’s usually data overload that doesn’t really help me with new radicals, but in this instance it’s really helpful. So note to self: check if radical is a kanji with a different meaning.
So let me try it this way -

I don’t think bind and entangle is an embarrassing mixup honestly, they look really similar and mean fairly similar things in my opinion. To be honest, I had forgotten the mnemonic for bind so maybe it has been engrained in my intuition for now, but looking at it’s mnemonic, it kind of sucks… I definitely have trouble with entangle though, the mnemonic for that is weird too. I think I’ve reviewed that reading enough that it doesn’t give me too much trouble anymore though. I think your Rakunzel idea is pretty good though, I might have to try and use it haha.

To be honest, I had no intention writing about those leeches but then after uploading the 夢中screenshot I realized I’m an active member of this thread and yet I don’t use your help actively which was kinda embarrassing at the moment of writing, because asking for help is way more vulnerable than giving help and I have a mind set of doing thing on my own, so there are layers of social anxiety I had to push through in order to allow myself write from this perspective. But enough BTS… coming back to what you’ve written -
This made me think and looking at them and at the nuance of their meanings and the one radical difference between them, I was realizing that one of them describes and intentional act while the other just happens. The you bind or tie things, it doesn’t happen on it’s own, and that radical has the 士 radical which is a person that is all about doing and intention, while the other has the 夂 radical and winter just happens.
Speaking of embarracment, I forgot I even wrote it. One thing for sure, and this is where my problem with this kind of leeches really starts - If I don’t write my own take on a potential leech in the meaning or reading notes, the chances I’ll remember my mnemonic are very low. There’s something about the app structure intself and the active process of writing the mnemonic into the app that makes it more memorable for some reason.
Glad it made you chuckle, I hoped the Rakunzel joke would click with others as well since it’s so outlandish so I’m happy.
Special bonus for anyone who has a problem remembering 条Clause
Here is what is written in my notes:
“ You know Santa clause? Well his brother Joe じょう clause is the one who is responsible for all the Christmas trees. Those winter trees are not Santa’s duty it’s Joe’s and it is written in a spacial clause in Santa’s job description.”

Ah, fair enough, I’m glad you were able to share your problem though. I find it valuable to discuss what others are stuck on in addition to asking my own questions, so I hope this thread can benefit others similarly even if they haven’t said anything here.
You make a good point about the radicals. I think using the 士 radical to distinguish between them makes sense. Though I kind of wish it was 仕, but I still see the connection. Especially if you just think of it as a samurai binding someone or something.
Nice clause mnemonic, luckily that reading already stuck for me, I don’t usually have trouble with the じょう readings.
On an unrelated note, I have been having a ton of trouble lately with cyborgs and xylophones. I have been mixing up さい and ざい all over the place. Getting tripped up when I don’t know if さい has been rendakud or not, and sometimes thinking a reading is さい when it was actually ざい to begin with. This is causing problems with many words, and I haven’t really recorded which words or anything, so I don’t have anything concrete to mention, but I might try and pay more attention and post stuff here about it later on…

speaking of 士 vs 仕 I was too lazy to check the winter radical to make sure I’m not mixing it with the similar one and then my theory of transitivity/intransitivity would fall flat look at this

Speaking of sigh - I use it for a lot of the さい items if not all of them instead of wanikanis cyborg mnemonic and it goes really well with all the disaster ones ‘cause sighing is an emotional reaction in itself which corresponds well with a personal reaction to disturbing occurrences, and since we’re on the same level and see さい and ざい a lot I I think I might be able to help you with it even without any specifics on your end, hope this somewhat helps -
・ 在 Exist
・ 剤 Dose
・ 財 Wealth
・罪 Guilt
・ 材 Lumber
As you can see above there are only 5 ざい readings for individual kanji on wanikani and one of them is a mix of both (Wealth).
The さい reading on the other hand has 30 readings per single item.
The only item that has different readings in its vocabulary list is 財 and it’s only 3 words which the only さい reading is 財布
the other 2 are 財閥 which I find easier to write the zaibatsu meaning instead of Plutocrats and 私財 Personal Funds. So I believe that giving this very short list some extra care and memorizing the other 4 ざい kanji as an exception to the rule (さい) will sort this confusion out since the reading of them both in compound words on wanikani is very consistent regardless of their placement (first/middle/last).
The 罪 Guilt one was giving me trouble at first so I gave it another look, and it is no wonder since the xylophone mnemonic is so rare it needed some more attention and it was sorted out quite quickly.
Edit: adding the short list of さい→ざい exceptions, so anyone that reads this will have the full correct information.
