I’m curious how you went about it, though. This time around I intentionally spread it out to make this not have a looming 1000-review spike on the horizon.
Which is the danger, the re-review wave from that first re-start day can put you right back in the same situation.

Yeah you make a really good point about the re-review wave. I took multiple months just doing those 2000+ reviews to prevent any bombs later on. Specifically, I used the review reorder tool to always prioritize the lowest SRS level so that I could still use the SRS system to remember stuff. After enough time, the review pile eventually went away, but I was doing about 150 reviews a day I would say. Some days none and some days 300 reviews.
