This extension lets you train your listening comprehension by playing a random audio file from WaniKani.
I based it on an older extension made by ampaze, so all credit goes to him.
Note: It just uses a random word from WaniKani, so some words kanji share the same pronunciation. Unfortunately I cannot change this atm.

How to use
- Download the file
- Go to chrome://chrome/extensions/
- Drag the file in the extension manager

Just downloaded it, definetly a nice extension
Its scary how bad I actually am at listening comprehension
Edit: There should be an ignore button or multiple correct answers, like the voice said ゆき but it actually ment “行き” and 雪 was wrong
I never imagined I was that bad at listening comprehension, haven’t got a single one correct yet…

Great extension though!

Edit: I added the ignore button
this is great! I’ve just been playing around with it, and for the most part, I actually recognize the words when I hear them!!! YAYYYYY!!! So stoked about that! The words that I don’t recognize, when I show the answer and then I’m like OH YEAH, I’ve found some of the time it’s because I have the pitch accent wrong in my brain, and some of the time it’s because… uhhh… I kinda sorta forgot the word already. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN??? dough!!! Just means I’ve got to work harder.
So, I see this just generates a word at random. Is it basically any vocabulary that you have unlocked ever? so, I should get words from all the first 9 levels of WK regardless of when they are due for review, yeah?
EDIT: also, I was fine without the ignore button. i like how if you mess up, it lets you try again, and then if you are really really stumped you can ask it to show the answer. i had a moment of panic when there was a word i could NOT remember, and i kept hitting the replay button and thinking and thinking and then i thought, “oh no! i’ll never get PAST this!!” lol. then i realized… i could push the button for it to tell me the right answer. hahahahahah
EDIT EDIT: also, does the ignore button actually do anything? like… i mean… does this extension actually keep any log of our progress? because if it just generates a random word, regardless of when it’s due it doesn’t seem like this would matter… Is it not purely random, like… if you miss a word frequently will you hear it more often or anything like that?
Sweet. I know some one had something like this but it was taken down.
This paired with kaniwani is a gold mine.
Thanks so much!

Yeah it doesn't keep track of anything, it just takes a random word from your unlocked words in WaniKani. So technically you could get the same word twice in row, but of course this is very unlikely to happen. The ignore button just gives you a new word.
This is great! Although I could suggest an improvement: Show the kana in the answer when wrong.
Chrome disables the extension for me saying it’s not from the store.
This is very cool. Thanks for making and sharing it! I would love for something like this to become as fleshed out as Kaniwani, but, of course, that’d be a lot of work.
embe said... Chrome disables the extension for me saying it's not from the store.Yeah, same for me. The next time you open Chrome after installing the extension, it gets disabled (only apps from the Web Store are allowed to run), and you have to delete it, then install it and add your API again. So getting the app added to the store would be nice.
I did figure out that if you check the "Developer mode" at the top of the extensions page, you can install it via the "Load unpacked extension..." button. Just extract the WaniKani Listening.crx with archive extraction software (I used 7-zip, but you can use any, just rename it to a .zip file). Then use the "Load unpacked extension..." to install the newly extracted folder. Chrome will warn you on each start up that you are in developer mode, but the app is not disabled.
If you install like this it should work
- Go to chrome://chrome/extensions/
- Drag the file in the extension manager
Unfortunately I dont have a google developers account, so Ill have to pay a fee to get one.

Sad, cause this is a nice little tool
I will take a look into it
