Using mostly my phone, mistyping is a frequent occurrence.
I really wish I had a “disregard this and ask me again” button when realizing after the fact that I mistyped. So many time lost because of this.

There is a reason why it doesn’t exist. The community apps have it and there’s script for it, but you need to be careful that you don’t overuse it.
I get the usecase though as I recently got a new phone and I’m making more typos than ever.
I don’t want to use an app or script or whatever.
There is no reason not to have this “natively”.
And if some overuse it, that’s thier own problem, it’s not like anyone would be forced to use the option if it existed.
There are probably hundreds of threads asking for native undo but it just isn’t going to happen. There is 1 streamlined Wanikani experience and if you want to something different in it you need to use it through API calls.
There used to be something like this, but as you can see it was quite controversial
Wanikani “knows” you would cheat, yes you specifically, if given this feature, so they’ve been quite clear that it’s never happening.
So what if some “cheat”? Thier problem, not mine. It only affect them.
Don’t punish because they can’t use a feature.
That’s pretty much the only frustration I have with wanikani, even more now I use marumori that have it.
As you’re using a phone many phone apps for wanikani have this feature built in.
for android smouldering durtles has a myriad of features and in case you’re on ios tsurukame is much nicer to use than the website on a phone while also having some additional features like undo
there’s also a mountain of info here on wanikani userscripts for browsers
a typo is a user error, the lack of cheats on the official app isn’t really a punishment
Non official solution shouldn’t be an excuse not to fix issues on the official app.
Closest WaniKani has got, was taking possibility of making switching to Wrong (ie. oops, WaniKani is too lenient) into a feature. I forgot which thread.
They also mentioned that switching to Right might be implemented at the same time.
Neither of the two – postponing to later in the queue, might be a better way of managing, imo.
But WaniKani isn’t the fastest to implement new features, not to mention obvious typo detection.
In addition, website being more mobile compatible is a relatively new thing. Mobile apps (all are third-party) had always been more of a staple. I think the website had been made desktop and physical keyboard first.
The reason is “arrogant devs”.
This is one aspect I don’t get how the WK team manages to get away with. This is a paid product, and the customer is always right. I guess the many people that defend bad practices on the forums allows the devs to continue being patronizing to their users. I can never understand how people can defend having less control and less customizability, or how they can tolerate other people telling them they know better what’s best for them.
I would be happy with a “ask me again”, and forces you still type it to validate.
I would get that if there wasn’t any way to use the feature but since there is, it’s just crying over a non-official feature that you could use but don’t just because you don’t want to.
I understand what you’re saying, but try to think of the entire community’s use of this feature, including those who would use it to cheat and not learn well enough. You might think that’s not your problem, but it is the devs’ problem, whose objective is not to simply make customers happy, but insure those customer’s language learning journey is effective when using WaniKani, and there are sometimes unpleasant things when you’re learning using a software for a group of different people, that’s not just tailored to you. Just remember that it may not be your problem, and you don’t care about those “other” people, but the devs do and they have to do what’s the best choice considering everyone, so please don’t be too mad at WaniKani, but rather direct that anger towards the nature of humans.
VERY well stated!!!
Why do you patronize people by implying they don’t have the discipline to not “cheat”? People who use this site are adults.
Why do you think that using a feature such as this would always constitute “cheating” and be a negative? Some might use this feature to their benefit, to suit their individual needs and learning style, and might be what pushes WK into being useful and usable for them. You don’t know better than other people what’s best for them and their needs and learning style. Case in point - me. I use the Double Check script religiously and without it I would 100% not be using WK at all.
Again - customization means more suitability to individual needs. It’s very obvious its needed considering the number of Userscripts and 3rd party Apps for WK. People want these and use them because they are actually helping them with their individual goals and learning styles. They are a benefit.
I would understand the inflexibility if this was a free service maintained by volunteers in their free time. But this is not the case - this is a paid product with a professional team behind it, and the demand and need for many changes are evident in the community. Also it’s not like the stock WK experience is some sort of finely crafted super specific method that yields results way better than anything else that’s out there. WK is full of problems, bad design decisions and practices, and has many many ways in which it can be improved. People treat WK as its some sort of piece of art and changing it would constitute artistic censorship. It’s simply a service - a learning tool, and more control and more customizability means it will be helpful and beneficial to more people - not less.
They can always add the more “dangerous” features under a section where you have to click a “I understand what I am doing” button in a way how many other pieces of software do to their power user settings. It won’t be the end of the world, it will only make WK better and more useful for more people (and it will make them more money), pretending otherwise just makes you seem silly and patronizing.
When I used an undo script I often found myself incorrectly marking things as mistakes just because I thought “I actually knew it”. Most of the time it wasn’t even intentional. Having the option to undo makes you more lenient to what was a mistake and what wasn’t. They are just trying to get you to learn kanji. If you want a “vanilla” undo feature, reload the page when you make a mistake, you lose all unfinished questions but it doesn’t mark your mistake as a mistake.
You’d be surprised
And that’s exactly why the WaniKani team lets people use their API. The standard experience is the one which works the best for most people. If you want some thing else not part of standard WaniKani, the doors are open.
You misusing a feature is not an argument for why it shouldn’t be implemented for other people to use.
This whole argument falls apart when you consider how many people have burned themselves by taking too many Lessons early and quitting when the big Review stacks start hitting them later. It’s so common people even warn new/potential members that its very likely to happen at Levels 6-7-8 and to be aware and ready for it.
You should be arguing for WK artificially limiting the maximum number of Lessons people can do in a week or something if you are so worried that people can’t handle themselves.
