Well, that escalated quickly… it’s actually the first break with a cliffhanger that makes me want to continue right away.

Also, am I the only one who thinks Rika and Reiko would make a great couple? What do they need their men for?

Yeah I started reading ahead ^^’
Look at that, some actual plot happening!
I quite like the book in general but gods it’s slow.

Also finished with this week.
With all of your comments I was honestly expecting more. I do like that it actually feels like tangible progress.
Read one page into the new chapter. Looking forward to what will happen there.

Tbf since I’m reading ahead i already forgot exactly what happens in what chapter ^^` But I do remember the cliffhanger. Although yeah in general it’s still a slow book so don’t expect anything crazy.

Yeah, same here. Maybe in English it wouldn’t feel as bad since my reading speed is much higher, but in Japanese it’s terribly slow.
I’m glad that the story finally seems to progress now though.

I had thought that I was caught up when I finished week 8 but then realized I still needed to finish week 9 first. But now I am caught up again!

Agreed with everything said in this thread. The readings are feeling quicker to get though now, but I still feel myself pushing to get through them because of the pace. There are a lot of words I don’t know, or am not confident in my understanding of, but I find myself skipping looking up some of them now because I just want to get through it.

I do wonder what I’d think of the book if I read it in English.

I plan to read it* after I finish this book but before we started I did find an article in Japanese that seemed to be exploring why this book exploded in popularity in in English translation before picking up steam in Japan, seemingly due to people curious about its success overseas.

I had a funny feeling reading this chapter that some turns of phrase, some of the symbolism, some of the plot I actually really do like, but it’s just all so bogged down with overwriting. If the text were a bit less densely detailed I’d probably enjoy it a good deal more. I also think, on some level, I don’t mind so much detail in English because my reading there is so automatic that I can skim the bits I don’t care about.

Anyways, another week down for me. Will try to finish week 10 tomorrow.

*realizing the ambiguity here, ‘it’ being the article, not the book in translation
