This week was strange. In multiple ways. It was dragging on for so long and I was hoping for a change of pace and then story time happend and it was written in such a convoluted way that I had to read it two times to understand anything. The interspersing of rikas thoughts into the story threw me totally off the first time I read it…
For the first half the only interesting thing was the mother daughter dynamic. They have such differing points of view and don’t hesitate to throw them directly around at each other even in front of strangers. Totally not a japanese behaviour.
The move to the inaka was definitely not the right choice for the mother.
It is concerning how often and in what way reika thinks about kajii, it is really written like she is a little in love with her. I don’t see why at all.
The 17才 story is suuuper strange. The parents take the guy not serously. Kajii defends and associates with the pedophile that attacked her sister. Instills in her sister that it was all her fault. Anna just believes that nothing happened between them because he’s a pedophile. And thinks he might be behind the murders around her sister.
What the hell is this family…
That rika is concious of the bug bites after that story hopefully shows that she finally is able to see the “dirt” in this house, that Reiko was talking about the day before.

Wow, okay a lot more going on in this chapter. I think I need more time to process it and also see how it continues to fit into the story, so I’ll just write up my thoughts on a more minor point.
We get more of the theme of showing how good Reiko is at Rika’s job. Rika ends up at a dead end when trying to get more info, but Reiko but able to figure out a lead and gather enough insight to push Anna. It’s also thanks to Reiko and that Rika was even able to get her first interview with Kajimana.
I find it interesting that Rika doesn’t think much of this, but I’m glad she’s not jealous. I suppose the point of this is just showing how capable Reiko and what she gave up when she quit her career to try to focus on having a baby.
Reiko still reminds me of a very specific type of person, especially when she was getting heated up about the Kajii household and accusing Kajimana of killing her own father, but she is at least pushing forward the investigation.

Caught up to this week finally as well
Our MC is so useless dear god. How is she even a reporter? Also she is absolutely in love with Kajii - she seems like the type who needs an idol and Kajii fits the bill well enough. But Kajii herself…weird misogynistic and misandric vibes. Sister’s fault she was attacked by a pedophile, mom’s fault that dad died. She thinks men need to be nurtured and cared for by women because they’re too helpless to handle their own impulses and idiocy. Like girl, what? That’s insulting to both sexes. I feel like I’m getting all the blunt symbolism we’re being doused with except for why it matters Kajii got her period so young. Something there hasn’t clicked me for yet.
