How on earth did you get 170 lessons? The whole point of the vocab is to reinforce the various kanji readings, you would have had to skip multiple levels worth of vocab to get to that. Levelling up is fine and all but what is the point if you’re barely learning the kanji?
Edit: @VictorLino log out and log back in. My forum display never shows the correct level and I have to do this every time I level up.
At least youre still at a low enough level that its not a total disaster… I’d hold off on the reorder shenanigans until you find a comfortable pace though, I would have a heart attack if I saw that many lessons on my schedule
@nakedpi yes, new items will unlock as you get reviews to guru level. It’s slow at the very beginning, but it will pick up. The radicals you learn will become parts of more complicated kanji you learn later (eg 力 will be seen in 働、務 、etc) so it builds on a foundation.
Mistakes were made and burnout happened. Regrets all around. I’ve knocked off around 200 since Monday though, and I made it through 1200+ reviews before (re: burnout), so I know I can do it, and everyone else can too
It’s possible to do 7-day levels without reorder scripts, but you basically have to do all your lessons right away as you unlock them. I did it for a while recently and had good results until all those reviews came crashing back down on me (and I’ve been trying to recover ever since).
Vocab is a big part of reinforcing the kanji, so skipping skipping them is definitely not the way to go. Now that WK has kanji at the beginning of your lessons by default (grouped by level), reorder scripts seem like they’d do more harm than good, no?
I agree. These are my last 4 levels and I have only been going at a pace I felt comfortable with rather than trying to smash levels.
Reorder seems especially ready for abuse for a new learner at a low level imo. The gamification aspect being put at a higher priority than the point - to learn kanji.
The idea of going fast is intriguing but i take sooo long to memorize the damn kanjis, i gave up on achieving the 7 day per level notion. I do about 20 lessons per day (kanji and vocab of said level) and that’ll take me about 2 weeks? (occasionally i dont do new lessons on weekends since i cant be bothered) but i try my best not to skip reviews!
Big salutations to those that can level up in lightning speed!
Yeah, the level isn’t what matters, it’s the content in the level. And if you’re only learning the kanji, that’s not gonna do you any good.
I rushed 35 because I wanted to hit that N3 95% breakpoint (still probably failed the test though)…and kept up the pace because I thought it would be good to hit 40 by the end of the year. I’ve learned a lot but it’s been hard to keep on top of things and not miss a day of reviews.
You’ll get better at it as you go along. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to go at that pace when I was first starting, even though the kanji at low levels are much simpler. It’s just a skill your brain needs to adapt for.
I also want to get to Level 35 this year for the JLPT 3 in December. ( I’m only at level 8 now.) According to wkstats I only need to level up every 12 or 13 days to hit this goal. Did this strategy help you on the test?
Just a warning; your WK level (being level 35) only means you’ll potentially do well during the Kanji/Vocab section – which isn’t worth that many points IIRC. (but they still intentionally try to trip you up with similar kanji).
You’ll be able to read a lot of the passages/questions in the other sections as well, but the grammar is more important than the words being used most of the time.
WKStats is amazing for setting a schedule, so definitely put it to use. As far as the effectiveness of hitting 35, I don’t honestly know how much it helped in the end. One of the words in the kanji portion of the test was 卒業 and that’s from WK level 14.
The part I had the easiest time with was the reading comprehension section; specifically one group of questions where you read a story that was missing words, and answered which word should go in each blank. I don’t honestly know if I had an easy time because of WK or because I’d been making it a priority to read a lot (mainly manga) and had therefore picked up words in the wild. HOWEVER –
Between WK levels 30 and 40 I suddenly found it much easier to read native content, and that’s been hugely beneficial. Six months ago I was still struggling through Yotsubato! and now I’m playing Persona Q2 (which hasn’t even been announced for localization) and understanding 90% of what happens.
So it’s a mixed bag. WK kickstarted me to the point where I could start reading manga and playing games in Japanese, and that exposure to native media has done wonders for my comprehension. Aiming for 35 is a good goal but don’t expect that you’ll have N3 in the bag once you hit it. If I did pass it was by the narrowest margin.
I’m doing all the Kanji and Radicals on the first day they unlock, which is around 40 items. Then I do 20 lessons per day until the end of the level. I can never get that perfect 6 days and 20 hour level up time though, I’m usually around 8 days.
I did the 7 day a lesson thing for a while. Then gave up after 10+. Stuff really got hard after 10, it was like a difficulty spike. It got really hard to keep up with a full time job.
And I just don’t remember things as well powering through everything. I take it slow and my times have doubled to 14 a lesson. Doesn’t bother me, I will learn it more slowly but it will retain better now and I won’t be as pressured.
