Hello! Since the extra reviews on WaniKani only allow for the most recent lessons, I’m afraid I may forget some of the stuff I learned if I don’t use it. What are some good resources to use where I’d be able to use what I learned? I’ve tried reading manga, but I don’t know enough Kanji yet to make the content comprehensible. So in the meantime, I want to do something to make sure I retain everything I’m learning so far.
I highly recommend
It’s not free, but it is the best reading resource for complete beginners – it allows you to start reading right away.
If you want free resources – then there’s
and
Exposure, exposure, exposure of course. But as you pointed out, you need some basic amount of stuff behind you before reading. Very early on you can start by reading material intended for children just learning to read. Just like I had the typical “Spot is a dog. See spot run” stories when I was learning to read, the same sort of content exists in Japanese. Lots of it. Typically of the 絵本 (picture book) variety. Not exactly exciting or interesting stuff to read (well there were a couple of fun ones), but the purpose is to learn to read Japanese. It worked for all the Japanese people, it can work for you too
I am not sure what is available online in this sort of material as I have never searched for it myself. I know there are several online sites that offer graded reading material, but not sure at what level it starts. I am guessing they would have stuff from “baby’s first book” and onward. As I have been living in Japan for many years, I had friends with kids so I had many places to borrow books. I had one friend I often visited that had several nieces and we would sit on the floor and read the books together. Always fun being corrected by a 5 or 6 year old. I could also go to the local library.
Thank you for this suggestion. It seems like a really great resource. I see there’s a way to input known Kanji into it so that it can tailor what Kanji it shows to you based on your knowledge. Is there any way to export a list from WaniKani in like a spreadsheet form or something similar, or do I just have to type them in manually?
Ok wait, I figured it out already! On WaniKani, go to your profile icon when on the dashboard, then hit API Tokens, generate a new token, leave all boxes unchecked, and then copy and paste token into the WaniKani import option under the preferences section on Satori Reader.
I started with Japanese from Zero 1 and level 0 tadoku graded readers when I was first beginning wk- I highly recommend!
I like that idea, learn like a kid. Basically what you are really when you’re learning a new language
