I don’t really understand the title attack on titan
Why is it attack on titan while when you read Shingenki no kyojin, doesn’t it mean attack from titan, because of the no particle.

English titles aren’t always a direct translation of the Japanese ones. They probably just thought it sounded better in English that way.
Wow… I… all this time and I never really thought about how that made no sense.
By all rights, it should absolutely be “Attack of the Titans” or something. I don’t know, man, translations are weird.
Also, I think the English title was on the original Japanese manga. Must’ve just thought the English sounder cooler that way on the Japanese side, like riverpuppy said.
So it’s Engrish? I haven’t read the manga, and I don’t know how to hide spoilers here, but the most recent anime episodes make me think they meant something of a more direct translation…
maybe they just felt like switching “no” around for the preposition
yeah I am in no way contributing to this conversation sorry
I honestly thought the first time I saw it that it involved Saturn’s moon Titan somehow.
The actual name is “Attack Titan” or “Titan of Attack” for reasons discussed late in the manga.
That does make some sense.
Actually, now that I’m thinking about it for more than two seconds, I had it backward. Shingenki no Kyojin would be more directly like “The Titans of the Attack” which leaves more up to interpretation.
新元気? That makes a disturbing mental picture.
Haha, oops! I just copied straight from OP cuz I’m lazy!
So is what’s written on the cover (still the same title even on the most recent covers) just a mistake they are sticking with?
It’s less like a mistranslation and more like someone just decided that it was just a catchier sounding name than the direct translation. ‘Attack on Titan’ has a hell of a lot more ring to it than ‘Attack Titan’ or ‘Titan of Attack’, no?
They’re technically conducting a (counter-)attack on the titans. Not a spoiler, right?
Just was asking with regard to the phrase “actual name.” They said the actual name is something other than what appears to be on the covers, so I’m just not sure what that would mean.
I think the spoilers that @Ika22 was referring to was the names of the titans. Eren’s titan is named the Attack titan (進撃の巨人 or Shingeki no Kyojin) and then there’s the Female titan (女型の巨人/Megata no Kyojin) and the Armored Titan (鎧の巨人/Yoroi no Kyojin), etc. etc… They’re named so because the Founding Titan (始祖の巨人) died and her soul got split into 9 pieces, the 9 unique titans.
Pretty sure by ‘actual name’ he just means the direct translation, which is Attack Titan or Titan of Attack, which isn’t on the cover.
Right… but “Attack on Titan” is still on the cover alongside the Japanese. It’s part of the Japanese title. Not that important I guess.
Oh, you right. It’s been so long.
