Any good manga recommendations?

Hello peoples! :child:

I recently started up my WaniKani Account again and wanted to brush up on my Japanese reading skills as well.

I bought the first ten volumes of Dragon Ball five years ago, which I am currently reading.

I am doing quite well with the level of difficulty there and will continue to read them, yet I was just wondering if you have any good recommendations for cool (up and coming) mangas. :duck:

I am so totally out of the game (never was in there to begin with) and would really appreciate your advice!

Best wishes to you all, and I hope I am not the 100th person asking the same question

PS: If anybody wants to start up a reading club, I would be interested!

All time favorite is “Boku no Hero Academia”. Super well done, and as an added plus for people reading to study a lot of the kanji have furigana. And yes there are many threads about this so maybe include your specific interest or types of manga that you would like to be reading.

Uhh I like the drawing style! :kissing_closed_eyes:
Thanks for your recommendation!

I think I am not necessarily looking for a specific manga category. I guess some more adult stories could be interesting as well. Though I am totally not into Romance stories.

The Beginner’s book club is starting ゆるキャン△ the 25th of April.

There’s also an ongoing Flying Witch book club which is starting volume 3 on the 4th.

If you look at the master list, you will see a lot of clubs that have read various manga in the past. Even if a particular club has been completed, you can still check the threads and ask questions if you run into stuff you can’t figure out while reading.

The Flying Witch Manga looks quite cute, though maybe a bit too easy for me.
Still I might get the editions and try to catch up.
Thanks for the detailed reply! :relaxed:

For slightly more challenge you should try a 4-koma manga like ご注文はうさぎですか. Rarely any furigana and can be hard to get the jokes at first.

Besides ご注文はうさぎですか I also really enjoyed 放浪息子 and やがて君になる, but those aren’t that difficult.

Or GA芸術科アートデザインクラス. ひだまりスケッチ.

Shameless self-promotion: I started a book club for Jojo’s bizarre adventure, you can find that in the Master Book Club List. It’s fun, not a must-read, but pretty fun. Consider it!

I guess I will check out やがて君になる
The others are a bit too cute for me I guess haha
Thanks for your advice! :yellow_heart:

Sounds really interesting, though probably a bit too difficult for me atm. :duck:

By the way: Is there any general rule when you will have furigana in a manga or not?

Anyways, thanks for the tip!

Ha, I assumed cute was fine since you described Flying Witch as cute (in a positive way). But it’s true that manga like ご注文はうさぎですか take it to a whole 'nother level.

It usually depends on the magazine the manga was published in. Some magazines use furigana for everything and others only use it sporadically based on what the author wants.

Nice, thanks! Good to know!

Like seanblue said it can depend on a magazine and author. Usually manga orientated towards young adults will have pretty much no furigana, except for an unusual readings of words or names. A fun read of this kind is 同居人は膝、時々、頭の上に (in English it’s know as “my roommate is a cat”). The plot is not complicated and very fun - it follows Subaru, a mystery novel writer, who adopts a stray cat. A chapter is presented with alternating points of view - human and the cat.
