Android version consumes a lot of power

The Android version of WaniKani consumes a lot of power and start failing, giving error messages. I have removed it from the smartphone.

I won’t stop with WaniKani, because I cannot judge it yet, but I think I like the concept. So I am just addressing a technical smartphone version issue.

The mobile apps are developd by community members, not by the Wanikani team.

This. There are at least 2 apps for Wanikani in Android so I would check the other one if you find the first one to be faulty.

I use WK on my smartphone almost exclusively, just using it through the usual internet browser.  Apparently the forums do strange things on android, but the learning part of the site works just fine.

Thanks for the info. Using WK in a browser on a smartphone is the best thing to do (as Shippeb stated :) ), I guess.

I sometimes use one of the android wanikani apps on my phone and haven’t noticed any unusual battery drain.

I think the newer, stylish version of the WK app is the one that consumes so much battery. This is the old app.

It also has quite fine grained settings, and you could for example increase the interval the app it checking for new reviews

I think you mean this one? (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tr.xip.wanikani&hl=en)
Thats the one made by İhsan Işık.
I use it since i started WK in November and use it for about 60% of my Reviews a Day. It does not drain more Battery Life than most other Apps.
I am running latest Marshmallow through.

Greetings!

Hello, I’m the developer of WaniKani for Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tr.xip.wanikani). Assuming you are talking about my app:

Firstly, I had never noticed much of a battery drain caused by the app. Well, I haven’t been actively using it for about 9-10 months now, as I haven’t been able to keep up with my WaniKani studies. It might be that a recent update is causing it. I’m finally getting back and did a batch of reviews yesterday. I’ll be monitoring the app for the coming few days or weeks.

Secondly, you said you were getting “failures” and error messages. What is happening exactly? Do you mean crashes? I don’t think the app crashes nearly enough times for it to become hard to use. Is there something exceptional going on, on your device, perhaps? Can you provide some more details please? Also, can you write about this on the app thread (/t/Client-App-WaniKani-for-Android/6035/1)?

No I did explicitly not mean that one, since I assume it's what the OP is using

Agreed. I used to use the phone almost exclusively for a while as well. Then I figured out about Tampermonkey ;) Haven't gone back.
