An easy anime (with Japanese subtitles)?

I’m not that interested in just disabling the subs though, if they’d have Japanese subs available for everything, especially in the various apps, then I’d definitely be interested.

That seems to be a somewhat frequently requested feature though, and it seems they’re not doing it.

Perhaps you should consider Netflix. Almost everything comes with Japanese subs, plus you’re not limited to just one kind of show. I’ve been taking advantage of Netflix as a resource for a while now, but I wouldn’t call any of it “easy” though.

Getting into the habit of watching native content is going to take a lot of time patience so be sure do both extensive (going through a lot of content) and intensive (choosing particular episodes or parts to study thoroughly) watching.

In my experience this is less true for anime though, unless it’s Netflix originals like Ajin. But for drama I agree that they seem to pretty much all have Japanese subs.

As a drama recommendation, I really enjoyed Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories (a Netflix original).

I haven’t watched in a long while, but it looks like Rakuten bought Viki TV and it’s still going strong. Asian drama shows, subtitled - you can filter by country of origin AND subtitle language.

Hmm. That’s strange. I have over 30 titles in my list to watch and all of those have subtitles. I just opened up an additional 40 or so under the “Anime” catagory (not Netflix originals) to check and only one didn’t include Japanese subtitles.

I haven’t watched all of the anime on Netflix as that quite a few series don’t seem appeal to me, so I can’t say all of them include subtitles. But based on my experience I could extrapolate that if I came across one out of 70 titles without subtitles then, I could conclude that my statement is correct and doesn’t warrant being corrected. I DO know that for Netflix overseas the anime series usually don’t include Japanese subs. But the OP did say this:

So I don’t think he should have any trouble considering he will be accessing Japanese Netflix. (I’m also in Japan).

The first anime I watched with Japanese subtitles that I could comprehend was “K-On!”

That’s great! Thank you! I’ll search that out!

あっちこっち is pretty good, ふらいんぐういっち is also a good one but you’ll have to watch out for the magic vocab you’ll run into here and there.

Thank you so much! They’re now on the list! Thank you!

Do you know Bonobono (ぼのぼの)? It’s a really fun show, each episode is 5 minutes long and it seems to me to have easy Japanese. Most of the characters speak slow and the repeat a lot some “key words” of the episode. And belive it or not, some episodes have some serious deep meanings, I often get surprised by some plots!

I’ve seen Polar Bear Cafe mentioned as a good starting manga, so presumably its anime adaptation would be accessible as well.

Sounds brilliant! I’ll add that to the list too! Thank you so much!

Thank you!

If you do go down the netflix route, I found this list of anime with Japanese subtitles to be useful. It hasn’t been updated since February of this year, so it’s a little bit outdated, but it’s still fairly comprehensive, and I found it to help with discoverability issues I encountered on netflix.

In addition to the newer stuff, they have a bunch of older shounen series as well, stuff like Cross Game, Slam Dunk. I personally found some of the non over the top sports series to be very accessible as they are both very long so you get a lot of familiarity with the characters, and because they’re always talking about school or sports and such that they relatively easy to understand. That is, assuming you enjoy watching those kinds of series.

Other people referred to Animelon. I just used the other day, and yes, it’s true that sometimes the video doesn’t load that being said the resources are amazing: choice of any combo of subtitles (eng., jap., romanji), ability to slow down the video, dictionary search when you click on subtitles, ability to set different font sizes for different types of subtitles, ability to download full dialogue, etc… I subscribe to Netflix and Amazon and also tried Crunchyroll but nothing beats Animelon as a learning resource.

Thank you so much @mechturk and @sergiop! Now I have lots to be getting on with, and can never say I can’t find anything to watch! lol! Thank you!

It would be so convenient if I could watch Netflix’s Japanese selection… Their selection in the U.S. isn’t good and rarely has Japanese subtitles. :frowning:

You should see if they have Dad of Light available in your region. It’s a charming show about a father and son who try to reconnect over online gaming, and it should have Japanese subs available.

I watched a bit of the first episode but it wasn’t really my thing. I definitely prefer anime over live action anyway.
