I just wanted to share a quick opinion that I think would be a game changer for WaniKani users.
I really love how WaniKani added “Burned Item Reviews” as an option so that way you don’t forget the thousands upon thousands of items that have ended up in the burned category. HOWEVER, I think it is currently not as good a review function as it could be.
I think if you could select a unit you’d like to review the burned items of, that would give more control and focus to the user, rather than having a randomized mountain of hundreds or thousands of burned items to review.
For example, say you’re currently on unit 45, but really want to review the burned items from unit 15, you’d be able to go to “Review Burned Items” and select unit 15 so ONLY unit 15 items appear.
Please let me know if you agree with this, and if so, let’s see if we can get WaniKani to input this function!
While the quiz option is great to review recent errors, the list of those which includes mistakes from the last 24 hr, is very mangeable and even pleasant… A random review taken from (as in my case) 4000+ burned items doesn’t make sense.
Giving an option to review burned items on a level basis is a wonderful idea… And relatively simple to implement from a programmer’s perspective.
Let’s hope some guru from the WK staff take some time to read this
Not to argue with whether it should be a native feature or not, but if you’re able to use userscripts, Self Study Quiz does exactly that. You can filter by SRS level to only show burned items, by level, and even only kanji if you want. Super handy, I use it all the time.
I agree completely- I really wish I could for example only review burned kanji for example. I’ve also thought many times while reviewing burned items that I don’t actually know this at all, and having the revive/unburn button (which you currently can find if you go search that item up individually) right there would be really helpful.
Counter counter point- Many people here are more advanced in kanji than in general language/reading ability- just because kanji/vocab of a certain level don’t tend to appear in the type of content they read just yet doesn’t mean they’re not worth maintaining.
It would be great if you could do it as an in-built method. Filtering Radicals, Kanji and Vocab by levels similar to the Advanced Today’s Level Feature would be fantastic.
Your argument undermines one of Wanikani’s biggest strength. That you can also use it like a leisure activity that still brings you towards a life goal. And I think it could prevent users to reset their learning progress, because it eases the return after a learning break. I have zero data, but I think it’s plausible that a Wanikani reset increases the likelihood to stop using Wanikani at all. So a feature that could decrease the number of resets is generally a good thing.
Yes I came to the forum looking for this. I’m only on level 19 but I have like 2100 burned items.
Currently, without userscripts (which im a bit of a dummy with) I only have the option to just review all 2100 of them in no particular order, and it doesnt record which ones I then get wrong (I would like them to go back into maybe a separate review pile or like flag them as needing additional study)
The reason for this is because I’ve used Wanikani on and off since like 2019, and so some of my burned items will be from a long stint maybe 4 years ago and naturally I will forget after such a long time.
I just want the burned review items to flag when I get them wrong basically… otherwise its kind of a pointless function to review burned items? If you can’t see which ones you got right and wrong…
