Advice on motivtion, balance between methods and resources

Sooo I open this topic for two purposes.

Currently N5 certified (last december session), took a N4 class from january to end of june (manual is みんなの日本語2). Last year I went all in and it was a crazy busy year as well with maaany changes in my personal life. After I took and passed the exam I basically took a month break and when I came back… grammar felt boring and tiring. I know it is absolutely necessary, but I am really struggling into finding proper motivation in doing exercises only. When I listen to something harder, when I cannot understand the words I read and I constantly use AI translation it feels frustrating.

What I find enjoyable instead:

  • conversations with a private tutor
  • watching anime (Yomi no Tsugai and Shorkuma Cafè), trying with mixed jp/eng subs
  • regularly listen to podcasts while commuting (Japanese with Shun)
  • いろどり too since it is quite practical.

I just fear that I know it is not enough to learn a language.

I guess everybody went through this phase, I just need your advice on how to get through  I know I can’t focus on grammar only, but I also need to find the balance with enjoyable content as well.

Second point is any advice on enjoyable resource, whether it is reading, listening or watching.

Not even N4 is sadly a little early to find really enjoyable resources. Maybe some of the comprehensible Japanese videos you find interesting? They do stuff like play games and explain in real easy Japanese what is happening. All of their content is pretty enjoyable.

Regarding the rest of your post. I’d simply take a break from grammar for a while. Keep reading/listening/watching what you find fun, keep doing your SRS systems and just stop doing grammar for 1 month or so. After that see if you don’t feel as adverse to grammar by trying it a little again.
Keep your eyes open when consuming Japanese and you encounter new things that could be grammar. Eventually you might find enough annoyances where the grammar is holding you back, and you want to study some grammar again.
But it sounds to me like you are lacking vocabulary and listening skills more than grammar at the moment.

As for how to balance between various aspects of studying – I think it’s highly individual, so only you can decide what works best for you.
If you find grammar boring – just give it the bare minimum of your time and use the rest of your time to do other aspects.

As for resources, here are some of my favorites:

Reading:

Listening:

There’s also

which is absolutely great, but, unlike other resources, not free (it has some free material though).

Anyway, best of luck with your studies and other cativities! wricat

So relate to this. I have made a lot of progress over the last year, but I am bored, especially of studying kanji and grammar. I just want to listen to native content because my auditory comprehension is so much better than any of my other skills. When, you can’t manage to open a textbook or grammar related app, I recommend the short Youtube videos put out by Coto Academy. Professionally done by native speaking teachers, they cover all the major grammatical points in about 3 minutes each. Great for review and as an introduction to new grammar you didn’t know existed. In 3 minutes you know more than you did 3 minutes ago.

Welcome to the club. Grammar studies send me straight to sleep, and I’ve ploughed through books, online apps and videos for the past couple of years.

Currently enjoying Human Japanese very much:

  • digestible chapters, all example sentences recorded by a Japanese speaker
  • answer quizz to unlock chapters, so possible to skip topics you already know
  • friendly and supportive approach quite unlike any other resource I’ve used
  • free (it links to Satori for extra practice examples, but there’s plenty enough in the free course)

Even if I only go through a chapter once or twice a week, it’s enough to make me feel like I’m making steady progress. Better spend more time consuming Japanese content that I enjoy

First of all, thanks to everybody for the replies. Been out on holiday for a few and I tried to go offline (as you can see quite successfully )

From what I can see right now I encountered two issues (related) that ome of you already pointed out (i know, but bear with me as this is the only place where I can vent, talking to people who went through the challenge) :

  1. Vocabulary: is not wide enough to let me enjoy what I would like to. I have been recently trying to read Yomi no Tsugai because I am watching the anime, but I have to check for words many times because otherwise I cannot even understand the gist of the sentence. Not to mention the manga slang which makes it even harder. Any advice to increment about vocabulary in some is highly appreciated :smiling_face_with_tear:

  2. SRS: I am currently on Wanikani, but there are also a couple of Anki decks I keep with additional words from Anime, Manga, class lessons. Sometimes I can cope with both, sometimes I can’t… And even if I do both I still leave the listening part behind

Yeah I reached one of the many frustrating phases when I don’t really know how to handle everything
