The premise sounds a tad bit like Blooming into you, just without the yuri
Maybe you can add the Bookwalker link in Availability ![]()
Going forward, there’s also the complex option of:
- These ones get cut.
- These ones stay.
- These ones are on the edge of being cut, so they stay unless we get enough nominations to take their slots.
(Making things more complicated than necessary is my specialty.)
And then you realize, that it’s just way too much work, so you make a userscript, that should solve that issue, but it ends up taking more time than doing it by hand

Done, thanks! ![]()
Usually I overcomplicate things as well, but I already have an idea of how I’m determining which ones get cut and which ones stay based on the voting interest of the past few polls, so 1 and 2 are already resolved.
Point 3 is interesting, but I think I’m going to just leave the system as is; if we start to consistently hit the cap, I’ll revise that stance, but given that this is the first time in club history that we have done so, I’m not necessarily concerned this will be a repeat issue, especially if we start cutting multiple nominations that have repeated lack of interesting following votes going forward as I plan to. I think just removing after the votes so we can see the most recent 3 polls, including the current feelings of the group, is the fairest way to go about it.
I read the first volume of this a while back and thought it was a nice light read. Also agree that it was really cute, especially the main girl, Hotaru! ![]()
The first three volumes are actually free right now (for a limited time) on the Kobo estore if anyone is interested in a quick look: https://books.rakuten.co.jp/rk/d191023c2fbb31e1a58ca8d373bb4466/
Ah, on Bookwalker too!
Ah, this is one of the early manga that I read! The first three volumes were free on bookwalker, so even tho I don’t love reading digital I made an exception for this one. And lately I’ve been thinking about ordering a physical copy and rereading it! I wish it could be in the poll this round, but I’ll look forward to it possibly being chosen next time. ![]()
Edit: This poll has been re-opened because data was restored.
It’s Time To Vote For The Next Book!
If you are interested in reading along with the Absolute Beginner Book Club, then please feel free to vote in this poll!
The list of options is below. The titles are hyperlinked to their respective nomination posts, which contains more information about the book as well as some sample pages.
The difficulty rating is based on feedback from folks looking at those sample pages, and so is very approximate! A score of 3 is considered to be “just right” for the club, with higher scores being a touch more difficult, and lower scores being easier, but since it is approximate, keep in mind that the scores may not be exact!
You have up to 5 votes, which can be changed up until the poll closes. I will keep the poll open until July 2nd, one week from now.
The intended start date for the next book is August 26th, 2023.

Oh, didn’t know we were reading a time travel book ![]()
Whoops, thanks for catching that. I corrected the day, but not the month from my copy-paste. ![]()
Just goes to show that every time I think I’ve got it right this time, I’ve missed something. I gotta stop spreading myself so thin. ![]()
6 books and 14 manga, I voted for 5 books ![]()
By the end of the poll, if the first few books are extremely close or tie, what happens then?
If extremely close, the one with more votes is selected.
If a tie, I think a run-off between the top two is probably the fairest option, but I’m basically just hoping that doesn’t happen. It hasn’t happened yet that I’m aware of. We run these early enough that even if the final pick is delayed by a week for the run-off, there should still be enough time for shipping for those who purchase physical copies, but I would still like to avoid that. ![]()
Somehow it happens…
I probably need to stop nominating pickable things before I run out of time to do weekly book club posts!

I’m starting to notice a worrying pattern
They were all submitted this week, compared to 3 months ago for the next oldest, so there’s that
That, and I didn’t do a little reminder for everyone to vote in the difficulty polls.
I would encourage everyone to go and vote in those, even for older entries, so that we can have a wider range of opinions on which to rate the difficulty!
I’m pretty sure it’s partially because of the “I’m an experienced reader” option in the polls. I do very much agree with it, and I think it’s necessary, but a bunch of votes in these is in fact that option. As a result, we are seeing the fact, that a bunch of people keeping up with the book clubs are already experienced readers.
Sudden three way tie to scare MrGeneric
