A39soundfactory study log

I couldn’t find the appropriate category to post this, so I may as well just make a study log and start it off by going:

I just did 102 vocab lessons because I’m pretty confident in vocab at this point. I didn’t intend to bombard myself in this fashion, but we’ll see how it goes? I did 39 reviews when I woke up (Level 6 radicals + starting kanji), and if we account for those vocab items hitting A2 and being due again at 4pm today, I’m due to complete 291 reviews today. That’d be my 2nd highest review count in a day, the most being 327 when I restarted Wanikani a few weeks ago.

Today I increased my study streak to 21日. I am currently Level 6, I now have 46 studying on Wanikani (I signed up in Jan 2025 but I much prefer this metric, since it ignores the two extended periods when I dropped it)

I’m pretty happy with my accuracy so far. Maybe it’s because I’m still in the lowest levels, but all of my random/passive Japanese knowledge is really carrying me so far, especially with vocabulary. I’m very deep into Vocaloid (and Project Diva/Sekai) so there are a lot of words I know because they appear in songs. Like in my crazy lesson batch today: 走る is in the song はしる!とおく!とどく!(by Usushioshisuu), the verb 広がる appears in that song’s chorus. 足りない appears in FUN!! by DECO*27 (both of these songs were written for the Project Sekai unit, More More Jump!). The examples are kind of endless, I could go on for awhile.

I also used to do English covers of Vocaloid songs, which gave me a lot of experience and exposure to different words, expressions, etc. I have years of passive experience and knowledge that Wanikani is helping to solidify.

Lastly, because I can only afford a monthly subscription, I’m trying to keep this breakneck pace up. I completed Level 5 yesterday, in 8.3 days. My goal is to finish before December 14th, 2027 for the thread 🌌 Artemis III: Back to the moon! - level 60 in autumn 2027

Personally, I want to keep a pace of 9-10 days per level. This is what Wanilog projects my level dates would be at my ambitious 9 days per level.

This feels like a bit of a stretch, though. Even if the average fell to 10 days per level, I would still hit Level 60 on December 6th, 2027.

But is that do-able? I feel like it is. It took 45 study days to complete Level 5, which is an average of 9 days. In my first 18 day streak in October 2025, I finished Level 3 in 7.8 days. In this current streak, I did Level 5 from start to finish in 8.3 days.

The only thing I think that would stop me is if I burn out along the way. And that’s very possible, since it happened during my initial push in October 2025, where I burned out after 18 days. However, I was also trying to do Bunpro and other supplemental learning at the same time, and ended up overwhelming myself. For now, at least until level 10-15, I’m only going to do Wanikani. I won’t let myself get over-excited and burn out again. Once I’m further in, maybe I’ll add another SRS like Bunpro, since I did like my free trial of it. But I need to handle Wanikani first. It’s been the most effective learning tool that I’ve found so far, since I respond well to game-ification.

That ended up being a lot, but I’ll post back every so often, mostly to keep track of my wkstats numbers

Well, I got through it. Did every batch of reviews kind of late because I kept napping (I don’t sleep great so sometimes I have to catch up during the day when it’s easier to stay asleep)

Bombarding myself with this many reviews went okay? I got 87/102 on the first batch of reviews, and did much better the second time. Overall probably still hit around 97%-ish on the day. Not bad, honestly. I’m still “Outside the learning zone” (lol)

It’s been a few days so I wanted to compare where my accuracy was. I kinda flubbed a batch of Guru 2/Master reviews last night (things like 九つ being an irregular reading from what I’m used to), but overall my accuracy doesn’t seem to have taken much of a hit? Vocab meaning keeps taking hits because I’ll confuse two words that I know came up around the same time, like saying 年中 is “within the year” when that’s actually 年内.

My radicals and most my starting kanji all hit Guru this morning, so I did the second batch of Level 6 kanji and should hopefully be able to hit my earliest level-up time of Sunday June 21st at 4:00pm. I like that WK gives some leeway on messing up kanji by only expecting 90% to level up, but I don’t think I’ll need it this level since this batch is pretty recognizable to me (死、私、家、etc.) and a lot of the meanings match the radicals.

My ultimate goal is to keep an average pace of 9-10 days, but the more 7-8 days I get will help bring down the average, in case things get harder later on. I’m still in 快 Pleasant after all

Oh. Oh that’s a graphic I’ve never seen. That’s alarming :fearful:

I’ve officially hit Day 50! Ignore how long the gaps have been in my studying!

I also hit a 25 study streak as well. I haven’t missed a day since picking Wanikani back up, and this current streak is as long as my introduction + initial 18 binge I burned out on.

I know people have said it takes 3 weeks for something to become a habit, so let’s hope they’re right? If I can keep the weekly/7 day level ups going, that’s enough of a routine that I start to see it as a video game weekly quest. If I log in all 7 days of the week, I get my reward on Sunday (just like Project Sekai! )

No major changes in my accuracy in the last 400 total reviews. I’m keeping an eye on this (not to flex) because it’s my metric on whether blitzing through content this fast is going to be sustainable. I’m a fast learner with a lot of free time (disabled) so I don’t foresee problems, but I’m still in the Pleasant levels so this could all change.

I have my last Level 6 Kanji doing their A3 review at 5pm, and I did 51 level 6 vocab lessons today so my queue will be busy for awhile yet. My ultimate goal is for my level-up time to average 9-10 days, and I’m still on pace for this level to be 7d 1h!

A storm is approaching. And I am supposed to level up today :fearful: which means all my initial Level 7 material is gonna be up for review to hit Guru on Thursday too. I could potentially have a +300 graphic :fearful:

レベルアップおめでとう!I am now Level 7!

This last level took 7 days 1 hour. That’s only 5 hours more than the minimum speed of 6d20h for this level. So far I show no signs of burnout or slowing. Today makes 52 days of study overall, with a 27 study streak.

Despite me speedrunning lessons, my accuracy seems to be holding steady, and is slightly improved from my last check 2 days ago. I would love to see where it is at the end of Thursday, which is forecasted to be +267 items, on top of my Level 7 starter material being up for Guru that day as well.

Now that I’m almost a month deep, I’m really grateful for a few things. One, that I am able to learn as fast as I do. I mean this in the least arrogant way possible- some people genuinely struggle to learn and I am grateful that I can pick things up as quickly as I do. Two, that being disabled grants me the surplus of free time to check WK at all hours of the day. And three? I guess that my broken sleep lets me plan for late-night reviews and lets me review items immediately after becoming available. Not everyone wants to be on WK at 2am. But I have no problem with it.

Right now, if I exclude the 3 outlier levels where I dropped WK, I’m averaging roughly 7 days a level. My ultimate goal is to finish Wanikani by December 14, 2027, and to do that I have to average 9-10 days a level. I should clear that goal by months if I keep this pace, but I recognize that might not happen. I need as many 7 day levels as I can to bring down the average  you never know what could happen

Also, one last thing, it clicked for me today that me only being able to afford a monthly subscription might be a good thing. I get it’s only 9 dollars, but the act of paying makes me think of Wanikani like college. I’m paying to be here. I’m paying for these lessons. If I don’t get on every day to learn, I’m burning my own money in the process. I’ve studied for the last 27 days in a row, so here’s to hoping the streak lives~!

Today is my test. If I can get through today (Day 56, 31日 streak) then I can get through anything.

My last 2 levels I completed in 7 days, and because of that I have a very. very large quantity of reviews today. I’ve already done 131 reviews and 19 lessons (the last Level 7 kanji) this morning, and I have another 330 due across the day. This is going to be my heaviest review day so far, surpassing my restart day 31 days ago when I did 327 reviews from a cold stop.

I’m not super worried though, the bulk of the reviews are split across 12pm, 1pm, and 5pm, so as long as I get on and do those chunks as they become available, I’m sure I’ll be fine.

We’ll see if the pattern holds and next Thursday is crazy

So I made it through, and set a personal record for “most reviews completed in a single day”. It took a significant amount of time (spread across three chunks because they were due across the day) but it got done.

I also realized why I got bombed with reviews yesterday, it had been 1 month since I returned to WK. Every item in that initial binge that hit Master was due for Enlightenment. That’s what spiked my numbers. Happy to know it likely won’t be every week

I fell asleep before my remaining Level 7 Kanji hit their A2 review at 10pm, so I didn’t complete them until I woke up this morning. This pushes back my earliest level up time to Monday 6am, but that’s okay. Unless I was exactly on the dot with reviews, the time was gonna keep drifting later and getting less convenient with my sleep.

The next few days until Level 8 should be somewhat smooth sailing. I have 32 vocab lessons left but even with those I don’t think any day is gonna go over 150-200.

レベルアップおめでとう!I am now Level 8!

This level took 7 days and 14 hours. A little slower than my last couple levels, but I’m on a better time cycle now that my reviews are due in the morning. Today makes 60 days of study overall, with a 35日 streak.

The 400+ review gauntlet run last Thursday was a bit of a trial, but I still think I’m good to push forward at this pace. Wanilog estimates that at my current pace of ~7.6d per level I should clear Level 60 by the end of July 2027. My ultimate goal is a 9-10 day pace for 🌌 Artemis III: Back to the moon! - level 60 in autumn 2027 , but considering I pay monthly I wouldn’t mind a sooner finish

My accuracy also continues to maintain consistent, and is slightly increasing still over time. Vocab reading is slightly down (because late night reviews can lead to silly mistakes :sob:), however my Kanji reading accuracy is up, which I’m happy with (since Kanji are what determines level-ups)

I also got billed again for the monthly sub yesterday (3rd month overall, 2nd since returning to WK) and I’ve made good use of this last month. I leveled up almost 4 times in a billing cycle if we count today’s level-up. I like paying monthly though, since it makes me treat WK like college. I’m paying for these lessons, so I should show up and make full use of them.

I’ll do a month-in-review post for June on Wednesday, so I guess I’ll see you then

June 2026 - Month in Review

June was a pretty productive month. I restarted Wanikani shortly before the end of May, so this month is the bulk of my work since returning to WK. I was very on top of the game when it came to doing reviews on time (except for yesterday  but that’s another story) and I leveled up 4 times in the month!

Level 8 is going to be a bit slower though. I slept through 2 review batches that were due, so my earliest level up time got pushed back to Monday 3:00pm. My advice, don’t stay up all night even if it sounds like a good idea. Especially not during a heat wave when you live without AC. It will kill your motivation to do anything

This is currently how my 2026 heat map looks:

I am on day 62 of study overall, with a yet-to-be-broken 37日 study streak. I might put off my 85 vocabulary lesson backlog until tomorrow or Friday, since I think I need one more rest day while this heat wave continues.

I hope to still level up on Monday, at least!

Referred back to this thread today to try and give myself a bit of a reality check

This level has been a bit of a struggle. A self-inflicted one, for sure, but still a struggle (I stayed up all night Monday into Tuesday and it messed up my review timing/daily routine I’d fallen into)

I like putting screenshots of my accuracy so I can refer back and see how I’ve done over time. And that’s helpful for times like this, where I messed up a batch of Guru II/Master reviews kinda hard and overall feel like I’ve been getting more errors than usual.

But in the grand scheme of things? I seem to be doing fine. There’s only been 28 incorrect inputs since my last screenshot when I hit level 8. That’s nothing. Especially when I’ve gotten nearly 1000 inputs right. My accuracy numbers remain largely unchanged (vocab only down 0.01%, radicals down 0.27%, kanji up by 0.11%). I’m worrying over nothing, and that’s kinda normal

I have 100 vocab lessons I can do over the next couple days. Or maybe just today. I’ve done 100 lesson binges before and been fine, so who knows. My next level-up fell into Tuesday too, since I think I forgot to do my current level kanji’s A3 review yesterday. At worst, I’m looking at 7.8 to 8 days to level up.

And that’s still ahead of my 9-10 day pace goal!

In short, this week has been a bit of a motivation hit, but I’m still doing fine. There’s always next level to aim for a 7 day completion again!

レベルアップおめでとう!I am now level 9!

This level took 7.9d to complete. While it felt like it took forever, that’s still not bad. If anything, I feel like it’s left me on a better time cycle to be doing reviews at normal hours, and not making me wake up in the middle of the night to keep my pace up. That’s probably for the best.

As far as accuracy goes…

I guess it was kind a mixed bag? of increases and decreases. Overall my reading accuracy is going up, and even though my meaning is going down (and balances out the total in the end), I’d say that’s an improvement? I’m really starting to get flooded with Guru/Guru II/Master reviews now, which is definitely challenging my overall accuracy. I suppose the true difficulty is starting to set in, and that’s good!

I’m almost out of the Pleasant levels now. I only have this, level 10, and then I’ll be in the Painful levels. that’s okay. I want it to hurt

I hope I can get my time for this level down near 7.0 again. I like the idea of a weekly level up cycle. No more wild ideas like pulling all-nighters.

レベルアップおめでとう!I am now level 10!

This level took a stunningly long 9.1d to complete. I think I finally lost a bit of steam during this last level  I kept forgetting early review timings and putting them at awkward hours, and as a result I kept doing them the next morning instead of doing them right away. I hope to do a bit better on this level.

Granted, to meet my goal of December 2027, I need to keep under 10 days per level. So I’m still within normal bounds.

As far as accuracy goes…

It has mostly increased? That’s actually not what I expected. Vocab meaning and total went down slightly, but every other stat is slightly up. This really goes to show that things aren’t always as bad as they seem

I would like to report one slight issue I’m having though. I’ve heard of it happening to others, but I didn’t realize how easy it was to fall into. I uh, have a 265 vocab lesson backlog I need to start tackling. I have the ending level 8 vocab, all of level 9, and the starting level 10 vocab lessons to do. I really have been kind of slacking with WK by only doing the Guru/Master reviews and the bare minimum reviews to level up. This last week/9 days hasn’t been great, but I’m hoping to slowly start chipping away at the pile. I’ve done 100 lesson binges in the past, and I’m not opposed to doing it again. I like doing reviews, so I think I’m ready for a bit more populated of a queue.

Also, I’m about to hit a milestone! This is my last level in the Pleasants. After this, I’ll have graduated to 苦 Painful. I’m really looking forward to that!

Let’s hope this next level can be done in at least 8 days.

EDIT: I forgot to highlight something as well

My streak has yet to falter. Despite slacking on vocab lessons, I’ve still logged on every day to do reviews. A couple nights I didn’t get down to 0 before bed, but my 52日 streak since May 26, 2026 is still alive!
