A Harta-ful of Manga: Let's Read a Magazine Together ❣

It’ll explain more when you get to it, but for what it’s worth I believe here it means like, “3 issue limited reprint series” - basically they’re memorializing an artist who passed away by reprinting some of their work, but only for three issues, not reprinting the entire original series.

Ohhh なるほど, “three issue” instead of “third” makes more sense. Sad that the artist passed away though.

catch-up corner home post

I finally finished this volume :joy: I posted a few chapter-by-chapter impressions in the previous book club but I thought I’d put my overall thoughts here, because, I don’t know, don’t ask me why I choose one thread over another. This was a read I put off for a while because the last time I tried it, it felt quite wordy and slow to read. I feel more adjusted to the cooking and fantasy vocabulary now, though, as well as the writing style of the manga, so I think I could start reading this at a reasonable pace.

I enjoyed this volume! The reinterpretation of magical creatures is quite fun if you’re already familiar with DnD style settings. The last two chapters, especially, were quite fun in that regard (the 動く鎧 chapters). The jokes also made me chuckle so that’s a win too. My favorite character is Marcille, because she’s cute.

I like the author’s art style a lot, she’s good at drawing people that are appealing but not too overly cute. She’s also quite good at backgrounds and I liked all the pages where she got to show off with creative settings and worldbuilding.

Example

In conclusion: As expected, I liked it! Will keep reading for sure.

Done with issue 94!

did I accidentally duplicate my last post? but how? and why? I'm afraid to delete it now

ハルタ94

It occurred to me that if I were reading physically ポテ would be one of the first things I read, so I flipped to the back of the e-book and read that first. This is the way.

ホテルメッツァペウラへようこそ <17>

Ooh! Unexpected mending story! I’m very into mending, although I always feel like I’m behind and I always have a giant pile of mending with some of the items having been in the pile for years. Lately I’ve been trying to work up the nerve to do some sashiko on the knees of a pair of comfy jeans.

Aww, that “clothes I chose for myself” feeling.

先生、今月はどうですか <18>

aside

okay, as a card-carrying dog person I can confidently say … THAT IS NOT A DOG. :joy:

'being a writer' themes (spoilers!)

Okay, this is actually becoming so interesting! As a person who has used creative writing as a way to deal with difficult things in life, which is something I think sensei does as well, I totally understand the need to take a break from writing, and how it can become like a sort of rumination if you try to force yourself keep doing it. That’s what it feels like is happening here, anyway.

This chapter also made me think about how clinging to a way of life that puts you under economic duress is unsustainable, and the pressure that economic duress puts on your creativity. Of course he would want to separate himself from that, at least for a while. It feels so freeing to go from an unstable and insufficient income to a stable and sufficient one.

But Murasaki kind of just sees him as her romantic hero, she kind of just wants him to write another book. So, will this push her to see him more as a person?

Confession: I felt a bit of joyous schadenfreude at Murasaki’s unhappiness over the choices sensei makes for himself, his life, his happiness. Cause actually, I kind of want that doofus to be happy.

夜の名前を呼んで <18>

Look how cool the design on the inside of Rei’s bag is!!!

ことり文書 <16>

Ack, no!! I waited too long after finishing this chapter before updating here and now I don’t remember what I was going to say. Oh well. Have some screenshots!

⭐️ かわいいすぎる人よ! <4>

This story is just literally exactly what it says on the cover. :joy: This one is becoming such a highlight for me!

:star_struck: Her face when she sees that shirt.

I originally had a question about the following screenshot, but I think over the course of the story I figured it out. Basically, at the beginning of the story Uncle sees a girl begging for more than one set of clothes and thinks basically ‘you do you, but me and Meikko are gonna be more reasonable’. But then by the end of the story Uncle is the one who can’t help but buy multiple sets for Meikko. Right?

GAH! She is just too cute in her lil overalls.

Ehehehe

Her cheeks! So f-- cute.

クプルムの花嫁 <21>

Just some super cute little vignettes this time.

⭐️ 今似て蕾 ✧ — ✧読切✧— ✧

I took so many screenshots just because the art was amazing! I think this type of grayscale / almost watercolor texture is really rare in manga? And the art style fit the story so well.

Aww, cute haha

I didn’t understand the bottom right panel here very well. Why does what Nagi says get such a strong reaction from … um, the other girl?

And same here … I guess I wasn’t able to follow 想像しちゃうだけある

Really incredible art. The skill to be able to make that bottom panel read the way it does … Wow. (I really recommend not viewing this image if you haven’t read the story yet!)

I wonder if this mangaka will get a regular series at some point …

珍獣のお医者さん <2>

This chapter took me a while to get through and I lay the blame entirely with コオロギ :joy: I have a daily maximum number of detailed cricket illustrations that I can look at. :stuck_out_tongue:

かっこいい!

Nice to see Kanna starting to feel a little confidence!

キラキラとギラギラ <4>

Fun chapter, but not too much to comment on at the moment.

Some favorite panels:

(You all know I love Ruru’s character design by now, I don’t have to keep saying that’s why I save such a variety of Ruru expressions, right?)

❌ スパイゲームA.D.1600 ₊ ⋱ 新連載 ⋰₊

I had an intuition about this one that made me page through it first without any real attempt to read (aside from a few key moments) and I think that intuition was :100:% correct. Don’t feel the need to continue this one.

いやはや熱海くん <2>

He’s so pretty!

The art in general is so pretty! I love the composition of this panel.

Wow, they play Settlers of Catan in Japan, too!

I don’t think I got as much out of this chapter as I could have, but ultimately I had to choose progress over perfection.

collection of pages where I had a hard time following things

I think I figured this one out in the end. Although I never remembered if 綿野 is a name I’m supposed to know?

I think I just lost the thread of the narration here and ended up not going back to clarify.

A bit confused about the laundry (he’s lucky because it finished on time, maybe?) but also have to comment on the fact that he SEEMS TO BE SLEEPING ON A BARE MATTRESS??? It’s such a small detail, but this takes my view of his family suddenly way further into the abusive neglect zone.

Confused by the very last speech bubble.

あかねさす柘榴の都 <13>

Sweet chapter, amazing illustration, as always.

⭐︎ 悪魔とブシュリー ✧ — ✧読切✧— ✧

When I first saw the title page I thought this one was going to be Not For Me, but actually it was really cute.

対岸のメル <2>

This one is a bit odd … The art/character design of the boy really doesn’t appeal to me. But the girl is pretty great. The ghost plot in this chapter also didn’t really make any sense at all. (Maybe it was supposed to be that way and we will learn more later? I don’t feel confident that that’s the case, but only time will tell.)

Probably the best moment in the chapter. :joy: Had to save it for posterity. :stuck_out_tongue:

剥製になった男 ✧ — ✧読切✧— ✧

Another one that looked on the surface like it would be a little too dark and weird for me, but ended up being kind of weirdly cute.

The art style was very dynamic and felt a bit unusual. I enjoyed that, as well as the strangeness of the story.

猫のまにまに <9>

It was fine I guess.

❌ ウィンクキラー ✧ — ✧読切✧— ✧

Unlike the previous two yomikiri, this one actually was too dark and weird for me. I paged through it but didn’t feel a need to get involved.

ここからそっちは君のもの ✧ — ✧ショートショート✧— ✧

If you couldn’t already tell from the art style, zoom in on that poster on the wall and you’ll remember this mangaka! Short (as advertised) and silly. I really like the ghost.

魔法少女マモル始まらない! <4 / 6>

Ehehe… So far I haven’t really been getting into this one, but I liked this chapter a lot more than previous ones. Looking forward to finding out what happens next!

クラスのアイドルは今日も推せない <8>

A chapter from a different perspective. The critique of idol culture felt a little more present/overt in this one. I enjoyed it.

貝と真珠 ✧ — ✧ショートショート✧— ✧

This … didn’t do a lot for me.

ウスズミの果て <3>

Whoa, how is this only the third chapter? Somehow the story already feels way longer than that. Not in a bad way!

So many kanji I had to look up in this chapter, including ones I’m supposed to have known for a while now. It feels like the kanji bucket in my brain is overflowing, and I’m losing kanji at random. But how do you make the bucket bigger??

With regards to the actual story I thought this chapter was really interesting and poignant.

八咫烏杯

Paged through without reading for the most part. Some interesting concepts in this batch! Particularly this one:

If it had been less violent and not 90 pages long I definitely would have read it!

Catch-up Corner ニコラ

I may want to get physical copies of this one eventually. It’s so great!

Some omakes from the book:

Final thoughts … Life overwhelm made finishing this issue a long process, but I am as excited as ever to continue on to the next one!

DRAFT

Ummm I’m going to stop trying to figure out what happened now.

Harta 78 finished

Reserving this space for my Harta 79 thoughts

Also check out my catchup post

Harta 79

If I’m not mistaken, the cover illustration/story is done by the 瑠璃の宝石 mangaka this time. The cover story is a fun little diorama (and I enjoy the details of the “keep out” signs etc being plastered over)

クプルムの花嫁 第6話

しいな wanted to go on a date, but not one suggested by her so they go to a shopping street and look at pottery together. Kind of sweet

ことり文書 第一話

I’d actually already read this first chapter previously when I saw the volume on Bookwalker. The dynamic of the butler being strict on 小鳥 but clearly also wanting to sympathise with her and somewhat fill in the role of her absentee father is quite sweet, and the chapter’s main story about the injured bird is also a nice showcase of 小鳥’s character (also maybe some symbolism there given her bird-themed name?). Looking forward to future chapters which I haven’t read

先生、今月どうですか? 第3話

Yeah this one had some very uncomfortable shots focusing on 紫, really not a fan of that

煙と蜜 第二十一話

Following on from last chapter, this one was also nice. The girls from the previous chapter came to visit the 花塚 house and harvested some sweet potatoes. But yeah the premise of this does have me a little wary. The part where リン was stuttering せ and you think she might say one thing but then you turn the page and actually it’s 接吻 was a decent subversion but not sure I want to think about the implied thing that was subverted there. The artwork was quite nice, and it did feel like it was at least engaging with the idea of the premise in a sense

ホテル・メツァペウラへようこそ 第2話

Quite liked this chapter, エンマ was an interesting guest. Especially with how ジュン was initially apprehensive when she mentioned being in the police. I think I find the contrast of the warmth inside vs the cold outside is a theme in this series so far

山を渡る 第十八話

This one covered a lot of ground. Very fun seeing them climb a mountain. I also quite enjoyed the scene of them camping in the station. Then there was also the depiction of altitude sickness. Looking forward to seeing more of the adventure next time

Me with several series in this magazine :joy: I could just skip them all, but sometimes variety is the spice of life?

Completely agree, I like treating the magazine as a grab-bag (I mean it’s decent 多読 material in that respect) where I just kind of read most of it. The variety is nice, and I do find value in reading stuff outside of my comfort zones (though if I can’t be bothered with a series then yes I will skip)

I’m impressed with the rate y’all have been finishing these things lately!
In the meantime, they keep making new ones too…!

ハルタ 134号

Still doesn’t feel like a rate that’ll get me caught up any time soon :joy:

It’s only, what. 50000 pages or so?

:construction: :counterclockwise_arrows_button: work in progress :counterclockwise_arrows_button: :construction:

Harta #82

:tomato: catch-up corner for manga I’m reading outside the issue format :tomato:

series debuts:

ふくふく万福朝

I didn’t love the oneshot last issue but this got chosen for a new (short?) series. This chapter was pretty short and sweet, I liked it better than the original oneshot.

あかねさす柘榴の都

A family story about starting a life in a new country. We’ll see where it goes! I felt like the art had a nice vibe to it. I enjoyed the chapter fine except my dumb ass forgot about the difference between obasan and obaasan and thought ‘wow, what a young looking grandmother’ for half the chapter :joy:

special reprint:

ききみみ図鑑

Sad to hear the author of this work died, it seems like a good story and I loved the illustrations. Reading it knowing he had passed away was pretty bittersweet though. I looked him up and he was very young when he died, 34.

one-shots:

節食のすゝめ

Comedy one-shot about a girl who can’t diet, didn’t like it because I’m not a fan of diet culture and it only upheld tired ideas about dieting/beauty/weight.

continuing series:

Well, since my last completed Harta issue, I read… all of Dungeon Meshi :face_with_spiral_eyes: Now I can get back to reading regular Harta issues while I try to fill the void.

Pretty good huh!

It was really good  Now I have a hangover from finishing a good series. I’m impressed that the book club has managed to read one chapter per week for so long, I had to know what happened and stayed up late last night finishing the last volumes :joy:

Now all that’s left is to wait for season 2 of the anime (yep, already watched all of season 1)

I was rereading the very first chapter today and got a bit of a shock seeing the art style changes over the course of the series :joy:

Non-spoiler art style comparison

Laios in Chapter 1:

Laios at the end of the series:

Marcille looked pretty cute from the beginning but she improved her handsome-style Laios a lot :joy:

Yeah, it’s 100% a series with that effect! Even for your volume 1 post a little earlier in this thread, the reactions I kept to myself were like “what a weird looking Chilchuck” and “if you like the artstyle now… just wait and it’ll gradually get way way better without you noticing.”

No, you’re so right, it’s a weird looking Chilchuck :joy: I think the first volume for any series is probably the most bumpy in terms of art style because the author is figuring out how to draw the characters consistently. I want to say the first time I noticed the character art changing was when Laios suddenly started getting handsome-style panels in, like, the 動く鎧 chapters, I was like wait who is this :joy: but even flipping back through those now the effect is way different from how he looked in the finale.

Yes, wow, I really praised the art style a lot in just volume 1, but it seems so different from the ending! The level of detail and complexity plus the character art improved so much. I like her art a lot, she has a really good understanding of anatomy and the characters feel so solid and real.

Yeah, it’s always really striking to me from her sketches and everything that she clearly enjoys drawing her characters and sticking them in different situations, and it feels like that really goes a long way. Be sure to check out Daydream Hour for lots and lots of fun miscellaneous character art etc. if you haven’t already! (Although a portion of it you likely have as pamphlets in the back of Harta issues)

Oh yay, I want physical copies of the series so maybe I’ll get one of this too, looks like cdjapan has it :slightly_smiling_face: (and buying physical copies of the series doesn’t count as tsundoku since I already read it  )
