A Harta-ful of Manga: Let's Read a Magazine Together ❣

It’ll explain more when you get to it, but for what it’s worth I believe here it means like, “3 issue limited reprint series” - basically they’re memorializing an artist who passed away by reprinting some of their work, but only for three issues, not reprinting the entire original series.

Ohhh なるほど, “three issue” instead of “third” makes more sense. Sad that the artist passed away though.

catch-up corner home post

I finally finished this volume :joy: I posted a few chapter-by-chapter impressions in the previous book club but I thought I’d put my overall thoughts here, because, I don’t know, don’t ask me why I choose one thread over another. This was a read I put off for a while because the last time I tried it, it felt quite wordy and slow to read. I feel more adjusted to the cooking and fantasy vocabulary now, though, as well as the writing style of the manga, so I think I could start reading this at a reasonable pace.

I enjoyed this volume! The reinterpretation of magical creatures is quite fun if you’re already familiar with DnD style settings. The last two chapters, especially, were quite fun in that regard (the 動く鎧 chapters). The jokes also made me chuckle so that’s a win too. My favorite character is Marcille, because she’s cute.

I like the author’s art style a lot, she’s good at drawing people that are appealing but not too overly cute. She’s also quite good at backgrounds and I liked all the pages where she got to show off with creative settings and worldbuilding.

Example

In conclusion: As expected, I liked it! Will keep reading for sure.

Done with issue 94!

DRAFT

Ummm I’m going to stop trying to figure out what happened now.

Harta 78 finished

Reserving this space for my Harta 79 thoughts

Also check out my catchup post

Harta 79

If I’m not mistaken, the cover illustration/story is done by the 瑠璃の宝石 mangaka this time. The cover story is a fun little diorama (and I enjoy the details of the “keep out” signs etc being plastered over)

クプルムの花嫁 第6話

しいな wanted to go on a date, but not one suggested by her so they go to a shopping street and look at pottery together. Kind of sweet

ことり文書 第一話

I’d actually already read this first chapter previously when I saw the volume on Bookwalker. The dynamic of the butler being strict on 小鳥 but clearly also wanting to sympathise with her and somewhat fill in the role of her absentee father is quite sweet, and the chapter’s main story about the injured bird is also a nice showcase of 小鳥’s character (also maybe some symbolism there given her bird-themed name?). Looking forward to future chapters which I haven’t read

先生、今月どうですか? 第3話

Yeah this one had some very uncomfortable shots focusing on 紫, really not a fan of that

煙と蜜 第二十一話

Following on from last chapter, this one was also nice. The girls from the previous chapter came to visit the 花塚 house and harvested some sweet potatoes. But yeah the premise of this does have me a little wary. The part where リン was stuttering せ and you think she might say one thing but then you turn the page and actually it’s 接吻 was a decent subversion but not sure I want to think about the implied thing that was subverted there. The artwork was quite nice, and it did feel like it was at least engaging with the idea of the premise in a sense

ホテル・メツァペウラへようこそ 第2話

Quite liked this chapter, エンマ was an interesting guest. Especially with how ジュン was initially apprehensive when she mentioned being in the police. I think I find the contrast of the warmth inside vs the cold outside is a theme in this series so far

山を渡る 第十八話

This one covered a lot of ground. Very fun seeing them climb a mountain. I also quite enjoyed the scene of them camping in the station. Then there was also the depiction of altitude sickness. Looking forward to seeing more of the adventure next time

Me with several series in this magazine :joy: I could just skip them all, but sometimes variety is the spice of life?

Completely agree, I like treating the magazine as a grab-bag (I mean it’s decent 多読 material in that respect) where I just kind of read most of it. The variety is nice, and I do find value in reading stuff outside of my comfort zones (though if I can’t be bothered with a series then yes I will skip)

I’m impressed with the rate y’all have been finishing these things lately!
In the meantime, they keep making new ones too…!

ハルタ 134号

Still doesn’t feel like a rate that’ll get me caught up any time soon :joy:

It’s only, what. 50000 pages or so?

:construction: :counterclockwise_arrows_button: work in progress :counterclockwise_arrows_button: :construction:

Harta #82

:tomato: catch-up corner for manga I’m reading outside the issue format :tomato:

series debuts:

ふくふく万福朝

I didn’t love the oneshot last issue but this got chosen for a new (short?) series. This chapter was pretty short and sweet, I liked it better than the original oneshot.

あかねさす柘榴の都

A family story about starting a life in a new country. We’ll see where it goes! I felt like the art had a nice vibe to it. I enjoyed the chapter fine except my dumb ass forgot about the difference between obasan and obaasan and thought ‘wow, what a young looking grandmother’ for half the chapter :joy:

ガラスの瞳で覗かせて

Oh… it was weird :joy: I can’t tell yet if this is the type of weird I’ll like or the type of weird that will put me off, based on the ending.

special reprint:

ききみみ図鑑

Sad to hear the author of this work died, it seems like a good story and I loved the illustrations. Reading it knowing he had passed away was pretty bittersweet though. I looked him up and he was very young when he died, 34.

one-shots:

節食のすゝめ

Comedy one-shot about a girl who can’t diet, didn’t like it because I’m not a fan of diet culture and it only upheld tired ideas about dieting/beauty/weight.

タナトローム

Bittersweet sci-fi story about death. Was a bit short, but liked it well enough.

魔王

This one had a kind of interesting, stylized art style. Although, sometimes it was so stylized that I found it a bit hard to parse. I couldn’t quite tell where this one was going or when it was going to end, not sure if I liked it? Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood for it?

しろくて、ふわふわ

Maybe it’s because I already read ガラスの瞳 but I kept expecting this to have some kind of weird twist. Nope, just a story about being yourself and carrying around stuffed animals. That’s all fine but it didn’t make much of an impression on me.

continuing series:

ダンジョン飯

Then I got distracted rereading the chapter of Dungeon Meshi. We’re at a bit of a dramatic part of the story though, kind of a terrible place to jump in :joy:

I love this page of Marcille and Sissel.

Marcille lamenting that her father ‘only’ lived to 82 :joy: (gone too soon)

Some cute panels of the characters relaxing, I like this one of Marcille bathing Izutsumi :joy:

I love the last scene of Marcille and Laios. Their character relationship is one of my favorites of the manga, it’s just so nice to see a truly platonic relationship between male and female characters who aren’t related. I like how supportive their relationship is and how they acknowledge each other’s strengths and weaknesses. I like that Laios does things like apologize when he’s wrong, or acknowledging that other people have been doing hard things for him, like the panel here when he talks about how he didn’t know how tough using magic is until he had to use it himself.

Ok, I’ll stop rambling about Dungeon Meshi now and go read a different manga :dotted_line_face:

ことり文書

Shiraishi learns more about Kotori and regrets treating her harshly. Not many comments on that one but it’s nice to see their relationship deepen. I keep getting worried it’ll turn out romantic but so far so good :joy:

Well, since my last completed Harta issue, I read… all of Dungeon Meshi :face_with_spiral_eyes: Now I can get back to reading regular Harta issues while I try to fill the void.

Pretty good huh!

It was really good  Now I have a hangover from finishing a good series. I’m impressed that the book club has managed to read one chapter per week for so long, I had to know what happened and stayed up late last night finishing the last volumes :joy:

Now all that’s left is to wait for season 2 of the anime (yep, already watched all of season 1)

I was rereading the very first chapter today and got a bit of a shock seeing the art style changes over the course of the series :joy:

Non-spoiler art style comparison

Laios in Chapter 1:

Laios at the end of the series:

Marcille looked pretty cute from the beginning but she improved her handsome-style Laios a lot :joy:

Yeah, it’s 100% a series with that effect! Even for your volume 1 post a little earlier in this thread, the reactions I kept to myself were like “what a weird looking Chilchuck” and “if you like the artstyle now… just wait and it’ll gradually get way way better without you noticing.”

No, you’re so right, it’s a weird looking Chilchuck :joy: I think the first volume for any series is probably the most bumpy in terms of art style because the author is figuring out how to draw the characters consistently. I want to say the first time I noticed the character art changing was when Laios suddenly started getting handsome-style panels in, like, the 動く鎧 chapters, I was like wait who is this :joy: but even flipping back through those now the effect is way different from how he looked in the finale.

Yes, wow, I really praised the art style a lot in just volume 1, but it seems so different from the ending! The level of detail and complexity plus the character art improved so much. I like her art a lot, she has a really good understanding of anatomy and the characters feel so solid and real.

Yeah, it’s always really striking to me from her sketches and everything that she clearly enjoys drawing her characters and sticking them in different situations, and it feels like that really goes a long way. Be sure to check out Daydream Hour for lots and lots of fun miscellaneous character art etc. if you haven’t already! (Although a portion of it you likely have as pamphlets in the back of Harta issues)

Oh yay, I want physical copies of the series so maybe I’ll get one of this too, looks like cdjapan has it :slightly_smiling_face: (and buying physical copies of the series doesn’t count as tsundoku since I already read it  )
