A Harta-ful of Manga: Let's Read a Magazine Together ❣

Just in case you haven’t seen it, there’s an overview in the 2nd post to find people’s notes by volume and add yours if you make them!

煙と蜜

Yes, you got that right. When I was considering 煙と蜜, I had a look at the notes other people have written. I got the sense that those who follow it like the art and historical elements, but the age gap comes up as a continued source of discomfort, even as a historically relevant/accurate portrayal. Tricky. It was helpful to know that going in and after browsing the first digital episodes it made for an easy skip for me personally. I can understand why others might enjoy it though…

For deciding which ones to catch up on, I made heavy use of rodan’s overview posts on their notion site (links in the 2nd post above), which includes info on which series still continue.

thoughts on catching up

fwiw the series still continuing that I personally am interested in catching up on are: ハクメイとミコチ (9 volumes), 山を渡る -三多摩大岳部録 (3 volumes), ふしぎの国のバード (7 volumes), and (coming in at level 35) even 峠鬼 (1 volume I think) but I’m not 100% sure if that last one is still continuing? I wonder if you would like ふしぎの国のバード. Anyway, let me know if you do catch up with one of those and want company! It would be fun to catch up together and discuss here. Also, in my 75 and 76 posts I put in more accurate info on how much catchup is required for those.

Series that have already ended if you’re interested:

  • I’m really happy with my decision to catch up on 昴とスーさん (I’m on vol 3, the first 2 volumes are currently just 30 yen each on Bookwalker). I just need to get 1/3 into Vol 4 and then I’ll catch up via the Harta magazines to my current issue
  • And you probably already saw in my notes アンリの靴 is also an easy one to catch up on (2 chapters) or simply jump in and try if you haven’t already as Ch 3 / Harta 75 is characteristic of the first 2 chapters.

The other thing, now that I’m a few issues into Harta, is that I don’t feel any/as much pressure to catch up on anything, because by Harta #77 I was following 6 series already, and in #78 I’m adding 2 more (!)

Thanks! I’ve seen it! I am planning on making a post for all my thoughts, but this is not really related to my thoughts but asking if the summaries online are true to the story (I haven’t seen anyone here mention the age gap/romance (only military setting), so I was a bit confused if it really is the content of the manga?). I’ve seen now that Rodan mentioned it in 2 notion entries, but those are a bit hard to find

Is it, though? I am really no expert on the matter, but I’ve seen weird child marriages promoted in other pieces of media with “well, it’s historically accurate!” when it wasn’t true at all.

But I think I formulated my post in a confusing way. I am already set on which series I intend to catch on, but 煙と蜜 was the only one I wasn’t sure about yet because I wasn’t quite sure what it is about, especially since nobody mentioned the age gap/romance element here. I wasn’t sure if the romance element is maybe overstated in the summaries etc… I asked now because all the early Harta comics volumes are discounted/have coin back promotions on bookwalker currently and I wanted to see which ones I should buy. I already got 昴とスーさん for example! But it was still very interesting to read your thoughts on catching up! I wasn’t aware that アンリの靴 had only 2 chapters before 75, so I might grab that on as well. Totally forgot about it!

Thanks for your detailed and thoughtful post, it definitely helped me narrow down that I won’t grab/follow 煙と蜜! (Which is a shame, because I am really interested in historical Japanese settings.)

Ah, ok, I think I misunderstood your intention then! But I guess you figured out the answer by now, yes you understood the age gap and premise correctly

good point, I’m not sure either. I was debating when I wrote that whether I should put that in quotes  maybe someone who’s following it has looked into that more

:eyes: so excited!

No yeah, you’re getting that right… :upside_down_face:

It’s definitely one I would not recommend picking up (at the very least without knowing the premise beforehand and being prepared for that) for that reason, and it’s a very frustrating series since everything that doesn’t touch on the premise is very strong.

I’ve struggled back and forth over the years with how exactly to look at it (as well as the other, less extreme but still uncomfortable age gap premise stories in Harta like 先生、今月どうですか or A Bride’s Story) (for example this post around when I caught up on it when I was catching up on everything in Harta).

On the one hand, the girl is much more the POV character than the man (he’s definitely also a protagonist, but just has… an enigmatic mien, I guess) and I can at least to some extent empathize with wanting to indulge via fiction in the romantic fantasy feeling of being a naive kid wondering what possibilities the future will hold, and crushing on a genuinely benign older man circumstances have brought you near (particularly with the looming suspicion that because of the time period of the setting and the character’s job, if/when the future does arrive it will not be so rose-colored and how this character grows up amid that will be interesting)…
… But on the other hand, it is consistently billed as a “love story” (tagline in the last issue I read was 「大正純愛譚」) and it is portrayed that way in a way that is very difficult to be on board with so long as you bring in even an ounce of remembering the real world and how it works. Like no matter how it ends, it does still seem to want you to enjoy these two characters’ hints of romance and want things to work out for them, the same as any other telegraphed couple in a long-running story. So that seems… not great…

So that’s just to say that while I wouldn’t necessarily call it so creepy as to be inherently repulsive and unworthy of merit - I would say your mileage certainly might fairly vary on that, and either way it certainly has caveats if not outright problems, and I do find that that inevitably distracts from the otherwise lovely period Nagoya atmosphere.

I haven’t really looked into it either, but I got the impression from at least looking over (Japanese) user reviews that the scenarios are played up for the romance so I would tend to assume it’s not a great source for absorbing historic norms.
I think there was some kind of in-storyline justification at the beginning for why the family was setting up this unusually long and mismatched betrothal but I don’t remember what it was supposed to be.

So, my general feeling about Harta so far is very positive and I feel like I definitely got my money’s worth! It’s just that when it misses, it misses badly (for me!). There are stories that I find really repulsive and they kind of muddy the whole experience for me. I am curious to see how Harta will develop and how I will feel about it when I have a few more volumes in!

Harta 75

青武高校あおぞら弓道部

Obviously I was missing context from the previous chapters, but I really like the drawing style. I don’t think it is a Manga I would seek out specifically, but I am pretty sure I will continue reading further chapters in the next Hartas. I don’t think I will seek out older chapters though.

クプルムの花嫁

I’m not crazy about it, but it is a nice relaxing story and the setting is pretty unique. I won’t catch up on previous volumes but certainly keep following it!

ヤギと羊の王冠

First I thought this references East/West Germany and the Berlin wall, but I guess not, lol. I was a bit confused throughout.

東京城址女子高生

I really liked this! For some reason that’s one of the chapters that stayed the most with me after finishing all of Harta 75. I just really liked the drawing style and thought it flowed very nicely.

アンリの靴

Cute! I teared up a bit! Another very unique setting.

夕凪に舞え、僕のリボン

I have no idea what’s going on but I love it! I will catch up on this.

ライカの星

Definitely my favourite from this volume! I loved everything about it. Also, I read it around the time the Irish Eurovision entry came out which is… very fitting. Needless to say, this played on repeat in my head while reading ライカの星!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wnjg9jZEcM

金曜日はアトリエで

Didn’t leave a strong impression, but I will continue following it! Beautiful imagery.

ヒナまつり

I probably need to catch up on it to really get it, but not sure if I am motivated to do so!

姫と忍

Very cute and really beautiful.

碧いホルスの瞳一男装の女王の物語

It is kind of strange to see Egyptian history so “manga”-fied, but I am sure it is really good. I am not really interested in catching up on it. Maybe sometime in the future.

煙と蜜

Let’s just say until I posted here I deadass thought the last scene is him coming home to his daughter.

はなやっこ

I don’t like 4-koma so I wasn’t really engaged with it, but it still has its moments.

不死の猟犬

I read up on it and while it sounds interesting, I don’t think I am motivated enough to catch up on it, especially since this chapter didn’t really draw me in either.

極東事変

Not my thing at all. Not sure if I will read more of it.

九国のジュウシ

Even though I lacked context and went in blind, I still was able to follow it to some degree. I think I will read more chapters!

紙一重りんちゃん

It was so weird, I like it lol

峠鬼

Interesting even without having read the previous chapters, but if I want to continue reading it I have to catch up on the earlier volumes to make it comprehensible. But not sure if I feel like it with everything else that has a higher priority for me catching up (Dungeon Meshi, Subaru to Suu-san, …)

昴とスーさん

I will catch up on this and then continue here.

ダンジョン飯

Will catch up first! (Already read the first chapter, pretty wordy, but enjoyable!)

トネリコ

cute one shot, but as a morning person very hard to relate to it lol

ミギとダリ

I am pretty interested in this but not sure if I will find time to catch up. I enjoyed this chapter even without understanding anything, which is a good sign though lol

ふろラン

Cute, nothing special.

瑠璃の宝石

One of the few I skipped because I can’t with the fanservice/horniness. Such a shame since it’s a long-running series and I would like to learn about mineralogy!

福引き怨霊生活

Won’t catch up. Was still enjoyable to dive into this random chapter. I am not sure if I can get behind the drawing style, but I appreciate that it is pretty unique!

紅椿

I wanna know more about this!

北北西に曇と往け

Probably my fav drawing-wise. Sad that this is leaving, but I think I will just follow the regular Manga. (And have to catch up as well)

レキヨミ

Not my thing, but not terrible?

乙嫁語り

This time I read up on this before I jumped in and saw that this is another love story between an adult and a child. No, thank you. Such a shame (again) because the setting and the drawings are really interesting.

つきたて!静小町

Cute, nothing special… But I want ramen now…

鉄機のダン

Another one I skipped and I am so happy that this is not coming back.

ハクメイとミコチ

Am catching up on the old volumes.

That’s the fun (?) of a manga magazine! Especially one like Harta - you never quite know what you’re going to get… and it really is interesting how it changes over time, both from series ending and starting, and from knowing more which ones you’re interested in.

It is funny - despite this whole thread springing up since I mentioned the sale on back issues, “Harta ca. issue 75 without reading Dungeon Meshi or Hakumei and Mikochi yet” has gotta be waaaaay more of a mixed bag feeling than my general impression of Harta now after reading for years when starting out for me everything other than Dungeon Meshi was just a bonus. I’m still a little bewildered/impressed that that’s the path most everyone opted for! Which is to say I guess that it is the kind of thing that I think improves the more you read, and catching up with those series is well worth it.

Thanks for the notes and I hope you do enjoy seeing how the magazine develops!

紅椿

I wanna know more about this!

Honestly, if 瑠璃の宝石 had too much fanservice/horniness, I would not recommend 紅椿… It’s definitely the horniest of these series by quite a large margin.

Looking back at issue 75… I think what happened is it’s an outlier fanservicey 瑠璃の宝石 chapter (I remember being surprised and a bit off-put by that element when I caught up with the first volume, but I think of that as much less of a factor in the art style as the series goes on - I thought maybe I just had stopped noticing it but I checked the chapter in the last issue I read and saw nothing fanservicey at all for what that’s worth)…

…and an outlier chaste-seeming 紅椿, which in general (from my hazy memory) is about a frequently stripping folklorist (?) sort of like, defeating various hot yokai women (and maybe some men? I forget) who cause lewd trouble for ordinary people and adding them to her hideout/harem of sorts. So depending on how you look at it, the disconnect between the story content and horny elements in the art is much much lower (since both are very horny) and so it might be less off-putting in that way, but there’s also a lot of like, bondage and voyeurism and nonconsensual elements - although in a way that, to be clear, I wouldn’t ever describe as cruel (from what I read) - more like sort of a zany sexed-up romp where everything being sexualized and nobody particularly minding is meant to be part of the fun. For me, the series isn’t my thing and I don’t seek it out, but there are enough fun elements (the folklore angle, the very bi vibe, etc.) that I enjoyed it more than I was expecting when I caught up on it once a while back, but I would expect it to be understandably off-putting to many people.

Anyway it’s definitely one of the ones I would not at all recommend widely for that reason and am always a bit trepidacious that arguably I sort of did inherently by causing so many people to start with Harta 75  紅椿 is one of the ones that’ll be heading to 青騎士 not too long after this (and I feel vaguely like it fits in much better there - “horny” is very low on the list of words I might think of to associate with Harta series, and certainly higher with 青騎士).

乙嫁語り

This time I read up on this before I jumped in and saw that this is another love story between an adult and a child. No, thank you. Such a shame (again) because the setting and the drawings are really interesting.

Just for what it’s worth - I read like maybe half-a-dozen or so volumes of this in English, and I would not describe it as a “love story” in at all the same way as 煙と蜜. This series is much more of a like, slow-paced slice of life that meanders through various elements of the historical central Asian setting and despite the title (particularly the singular in the English title…) there’s big chunks where it focuses on various side characters etc., without much of a feeling of a central protagonist or romance.

… buuuuuut it does begin from an intertribal marriage of convenience between a 12 year old boy and a 20 year old woman that’s portrayed sympathetically so again it’s certainly one with that caveat to be aware of at the very least. (this one leaves Harta when 青騎士 starts up also).

One wonders if the success of 乙嫁語り led to 煙と蜜 being greenlit, or if there’s one editor with questionable taste in premises or something (pure speculation), but this kind of element seeming relatively common in Harta is certainly its most uncomfortable quality and the one I would most try to flag for people early on in terms of content warning type stuff.

Thanks for your fast answer! It is also very nice to follow your notes on notion!

No, it is definitely fun! The only thing I wonder about is if I will follow Harta after I run out of backlog from my cheap bookwalker stash. Because I really like the discovery (and reading stuff I normally wouldn’t seek out, which happens for me only through magazines!) and besides Comic Beam I haven’t found another manga magazine that would grab me as well as Harta does (I tried a bunch of different magazines and read a bit of Harta before the sale), so I would be a bit sad if the “off-putting” stuff would become overwhelming in the future. But I am pretty positive about it! (Since I also don’t remember as much of those things that were off-putting here in the volumes I read later on – although I was more liberal on skipping things then I was with Harta 75 since I wanted to give everything a chance!).

紅椿/瑠璃の宝石

Ok, I am not totally opposed to horniness  Depends if it makes sense in the context of the series. 瑠璃の宝石 was just really weird in that it felt so out of place? But from what you wrote 紅椿 seems like to be going in a similar direction  Good thing I have already so many series I want to catch up on, one less thing to worry about :innocent:

Btw, I just went back to my “old” Harta volume (which is a way newer edition from 2023 since I bought it as a current issue before the sale) and checked out 瑠璃の宝石 again and – like you said – there’s nothing I would identify as fanservice. I even completely forgot I already read a chapter of it in the past, because it felt so different in Harta 75! I’m a bit shocked now that those are the same series haha.

乙嫁語り

I read quite a bit about it today and I think it must be a really good piece of art since many people were very passionate about it and I saw some very beautiful artwork of it. I also read that the author regularly travels into the area to research (like every year?) which is really impressive! There were a few more things that made me feel like it is probably not for me (I think it’s maybe a bit too romanticized in how the time/area/societal issues are depicted – but totally going off assumptions and other critiques that I read), even when the focus isn’t on the child-adult romance. And, from what I read, I think I certainly agree with you in that it is probably not as bad as 煙と蜜 since the romance doesn’t seem to be in the center of the story. But still, I’m glad it leaves so I don’t need to debate with myself too much if I should give it a chance

Mah momma always said, Harta is like a box of chocolates…

Incredible, wow, @yukitanuki you read almost all of it. It was fun to read your impressions, also for the ones I skipped at a glance or without reading (mostly the ones getting transferred)

I feel like I should check out 東京城址女子高生! Actually I think that one caught my attention in 77 now that I think about it. I’ll do that when I catch up on 昴 and open these again soon

紅椿

Oh so that’s what it’s about, thank you. All I remember was the incredibly racey scene on the last page of the chapter in Harta 76 which I saw in all its glory as that preceded ライカの星, and when I made notes on my log I flagged NSFW thinking of yukitanuki on a train. So when I saw this

I busted a gut laughing, but also got curious about what the heck it’s about!

What a funny impression! Actually, I love it so much despite barely scratching the surface so far. I’m so glad I didn’t wait to catch up on anything before jumping in. But will definitely read those two and probably catch up on them before long.

I spent way too long staring at this wondering why this title looked familiar until I realized I have 5 volumes of it from BOOKOFF’s 100 yen section… I hadn’t read it yet and whatever summary I read when looking it up said it was a historical fiction series detailing the lives of various wives in Central Asia. I’m glad I saw this warning before starting it.

whaaat I finished 76 already!!

musings about comparing 75 with 76

Generally 76 was way better in my opinion, 75 is maybe not the best place to start (besides having ライカの星 in there, my beloved…), especially since 76 had so many cool one-shots that I really enjoyed! 76 felt more like the random Hartas I bought over time and liked. 75 had a bit of too much I don’t like and too little things that blew me away. But, in Hartas defense, this was also due to potentially lovable series being long running ones that I skipped because I wanted to first catch up on them or I read a chapter and just had no clue what’s going on, lol. But 76 was a lot more approachable!

I didn’t comment on everything this time and skipped more things than last time… I think I will comment less and less (and skip more things that I know that I don’t enjoy much from past chapters or in general content wise), especially if I already commented a series before, unless something memorable happened in that specific chapter. I still wrote more than I expected haha

Harta 76

debuts

生き残った6人によると

(sorry I forgot all the names…)
It’s funny and the art style is really good! I am really looking forward to reading more of it. I expected it to be a bit darker, like the two people who left on the bike to immediately get eaten by zombies? But let’s see!

真柴姉弟は顔が固い

I actually really liked that one! I’m a sucker for the “looks mean but isn’t mean” trope haha looking forward to reading more!

one shots

I liked them all and don’t have anything special to say about them (besides mentioning that さよなら100円 was my fav of the bunch), but…

向かいの彼女

Okay, this made me laugh, because I definitely saw my earlier self in the other girl while I was reading this (down to the hair cut, although my hair is a lot more unruly than hers…).

continuing series

クブルムの花嫁

Yikes that ending was pretty creepy to me. I hope this was just an unfortunate end/chapter.

アンリの靴

Slightly underwhelming since I am not that interested in the technical aspects of leather, but the last page was so cute (and lots of other things too!) that I still very much enjoyed it.

手つかずの国

Another good one  I don’t have much to say about it but I kind of wanted to give it a shout out because it was such a joyful little adventure to read through this! (Maybe because it was also very rainy where I’m at)

ライカの星

I’m so worried now that this will get an ending that will make me cry

ふしぎの国のバード

That was very interesting! I didn’t knew about the teeth blackening tradition at all. This goes into the “catch up someday”-pile.

紅椿

I miss the cute couple from the previous chapter  I knew a few pages in that everyone was right and this isn’t for me :joy:

北北西に曇と往け

I had to see for myself if that is the real branding…

Yes.. it’s so beautiful haha

If I ever get to Iceland again I will make sure to get some Pylsusinnep! (Which apparently is some sweet mustard connected to the Bæjarins Bestu sausage stand)

冥府が来た!

Felt a bit nostalgic to me? Maybe because it reminded me of Spirited Away in some ways… But it also in general felt like something that would come out while I was a teenager, but in a good way!

福引き怨霊生活

Surprisingly entertaining? The plot was fun to follow and nicely self containing. I wasn’t sure if I will even read the next chapter, but as long as it is still running in Harta I am not opposed on following it.

A子さんの恋人

Even though I wasn’t sure what’s going on, I was so mad about that cliffhanger! This definitely goes on to the “want to catch up at some point”-pile.

interesting thoughts about how to recommend where someone enters Harta - you’re right it would have been so cool if ライカの星 had started in 76, that would have been the perfect issue for starting out.

向かいの彼女

haha, love that! I hadn’t really thought about it in terms of the total picture, probably my friends and family would peg me as the other girl for (me) being more of a shy, serious, worried type. But the thing about smiley girl, with people I knew, and for a few great years when I first came to Europe, I had an obstinate open optimism, and that’s what really struck me. Even if I was never so openly jokey or anything like that, I saw that spirit she exuded and I was like, wait, I used to have that spirit [not sure what it is, maybe the optimistic view everyone I came across was a potential friend] turned way more up than it is now.

紅椿

have been waiting for this :joy:

Your impressions 75/76 are making me curious about some I’ve skipped  I’ll probably do a pass at the end and have a look at some of these…

this is a RU volume
(There are three types: HA RU TA. HA series are published every issue, but some series are only RU or TA (but everything is published in HA volumes) )

🍵 general club chat

A note on this series on Natively
https://learnnatively.com/series/a4f81a2a56/

I noticed there were 6 issues in the middle missing, so I requested those and Brandon kindly updated and inserted those issues.

If you request more issues, please make sure you request everything in order without skipping any issues, or tag me and I don’t mind doing it. These have to be added by Brandon manually, so when I request them I put in a link to the month / year / issue number and the Amazon link.

Anyway, I’m mentioning this since it’s so manual and nice that Brandon made an exception to support Harta readers, I thought it would be nice as far as possible to raise awareness to not cause extra work.

All spoilers blurred/hidden, you can safely open the high level dropdowns to see general comments, snippets of cover art, cultural tidbits, and all the other rabbit holes I went down.

debuts

🧜‍♀️ アビスアジュールの罪人 / Deep Sea Rebel

アビスアジュールの罪人 1 | L18

Playful and imaginative seaworld! It’s mostly images and very little text in chapter 1. It will be hard to rate as some of the very little text uses less common words and kanji.

a note on the title

罪人 has two readings ざいにん (criminal) and つみびと (sinner). Based on the definitions (I haven’t come across these in context elsewhere so I’d be interested in what others think) they could both point to wrongdoing, but the reading printed (ざいにん) has more of a breaking the law connotation whereas the latter has a judgment of moral wrongdoing to it. Interestingly the English translation takes the latter judgy definition sinner (despite using the furigana consistent with the former criminal). In Harta it’s glossed Sinner of the Seabed which made me wonder what kind of raunchy ride I’m getting into. The collected volume uses A Sinner of the Deep Sea. I steadfastly refuse to read the collected volume blurb so I don’t know, but I’m so curious. There are a few clues but for now, this could go anywhere. Normally, I use the English title the author chose. But for this one, I’m calling it Deep Sea Rebel based on where I predict it’s going. Haha this is why I don’t read blurbs, my imagination is running wild with things I bet are foreshadowed or directly stated in the blurb of the collected volumes, I’ll check after ch 5.

I like how the artist is able to get across sensuality without giving a (to me) lechy feel of sexual objectification. Top marks and I’m looking forward to Ch 2!

🛎️ ホテル・メッツァペウラへようこそ / Tervetuloa Hotelli Metsäpeuraan / Welcome to Hotel Metsapeura

ホテル・メッツァペウラへようこそ 1巻 | L23

Here we go! I started this when I got these magazines and I’m back at it.

At the time it was niche and unheard of but it’s gotten some traction since then. I enjoyed the opening winter scene and setting it up for a daily life manga with some mystery about the various characters: a butler, chef/ owner (?), and a Japanese tourist/ down and out kid who they take under their wing

one-shots

🍱 後ろのギャルにナプキンとられた / The Girl behind me took my pad

Yep, that’s what it’s called and that’s what happens

And it started with an image that really disgusted me

便所飯
No! Why is there a word for something like this!

I almost skipped this one at multiple points

It starts off with this uncomfortable feeling like the image above, and it keeps it up - in such a way that kept me questioning my Japanese, but no actually that really happened and so on each page. I would have normally never picked up and read a manga like this. And that’s the magic of these one-shots, I explore outside of my comfort zone. Curiosity kept me going and in the end it was thought provoking in a messy indefinable kind of way. I appreciated Rodan’s comments. This story is about acknowledging social dynamics we don’t want to exist, but yet they do. So all in all - tough to stomach but I’m glad I read it

🪁 街に鏤め、宙に描く / Scattered in the city, drawn in the air

A girls parcour comedy, set of three short stories

Cute relaxing break from life. I loved the art - parcour is made for manga!

great scene story 1

funny scene story 2

💀 ねえさん、起きて

A story about a boy obsessed with bringing his sister back to life.
Maybe this makes a statement as a social commentary on the loneliness of AI as friend and depending on one person for your happiness. But it didn’t do much for me, it felt targeted at someone totally different than me, in a different phase of life

continuing series

In the order I started following them with the magazine

☄️ ライカの星 / Laika's star Ch 4 / Harta 78

Yay, I was hoping to meet Mushuka again. This was a much faster redemption arc than expected given the emotional intensity of the first chapters, but still good

🧟 生き残った6人によると / What 6 Survivors Told Ch 3 / Harta 78

It’s not something I’d normality go for, but I’ll admit I’m intrigued by how the characters will end up developing and interacting.

And I feel like I’ve had so many scenes in my life like Lily - like, is anyone else responsible around here? So responsible yet so naive and clueless.

I also enjoy the light humour poking fun at business manager speech  same jargon in Japan, just mostly in katakana .

🥿 アンリの靴 / Anri, a Shoemaker Ch 6 / Harta 78

Cute chapter, but makes me realise her back story is going to be sad
I like how the shoes she made for her brother are in one of the photos on the chapter cover

This cat knows just what you need

Closing scene - adorable

🌙 夜の名前を呼んで / Call the Name of the Night (Ch 2 / Harta 78)

:star_struck: adorable, love the star jam and the whole concept behind the heavy and light stars. The ending really made me question my Japanese  when Mira gets drunk from the jam, since it seems a 迷い星 got in the mix from someone drunk.

:jeans: 昴とスーさん - I’m now caught up and following this one! My comments for this one are below in the “previous issues/catch-up notes” section since it spans pre-Harta 75 to the current issue.

For any other series not listed here or in the catch-up section below, if/when I catch up on it later, I’ll link notes from my Harta 75 or Harta 76 homes posts depending on which issue was that manga’s first digital appearance.

end matter

⛏️エルツ / Dazzle : intro to Non-stop loving section (reader comments etc) Harta 75+

So cute, the creative energy that エルツ is mining is used to power their village

✒️ editorial

I tried reading the editorial. It went like this: look at a sentence, get half a gist, then bulk translate a whole sentence at a time since there would be far too many lookups to make sense one by one. So not reading at all, but satisfied my curiosity. 山本さん has done a lot including a manga called レッド (seems to be about a protest movement in Japan around 1969-1972), and here he talks about a load of connections starting with someone he interviewed for that story. So basically impenetrable as I didn’t recognise the books and films, nor many names aside from John Lennon and Yoko Ono. It looked interesting - I’ll come back to these when adult level off the cuff prose is more comprehensible

previous issues / catch-up notes

👖 昴とスーさん / The Strange Life of Subaru (Ch 13 - 26/Vol 3 - 4 & Harta 75-78) - RU

Volume 3 - aaahhh it felt like every chapter was a different genre  The story elements and flow make a lot of work for the mangaka. I like the different perspectives on what it means to look like an age vs be an age, how different people treat him, whether they know the whole story or not. There’s a lot to play with there. I adored the art in the last chapter

Volume 4 spoilery thoughts

In some ways volume 4 didn’t go how I’d like :smiling_face_with_tear: but I guess it’s inevitable to have a reaction after getting so attached, especially to volumes 1-2.

(Ch 20-22) - now the stuff Mio starts looking into from the end of volume 3 doesn’t quite tally, I’m surprised in a way that she doesn’t seem to be telling Subaru about these developments, like that she (big spoiler) found his dad and Kuroe was really his mom. But maybe it would be too much for him, I’m not sure, it’s a tough call. The scene with his dad where his dad thought this time the difference was Mio’s love, me in the background going :exploding_head: nooooo I didn’t sign up for a Disney love story.

Ch 23 - Incredibly confusing, I think I misunderstood something, at the start of the flashback it says 3 years ago, Subaru became 20 for the third time? So I missed one? I thought his first time was the previous life he forgot, the flashback scene in this chapter must be the second, and then the third would be when he grows up now with Mio. But if the flashback scene is already the third, then he must have had two cycles with his mom as grandmother - it would make sense then why his dad looks so old - I need to read Ch 19-22 again. Maybe I misunderstood something, but on the other hand, this mangaka leaves a lot unsaid that you have to piece together yourself, so maybe that is one of those

Ch 24-25 / Harta 75 & 77
I liked the Nishio sequence. A bit confusing to have such timing for Subaru to show up just when Nishio wants to propose but ok! Really tender scenes and I like how Subaru takes some of that tenderness back and it surprises Mio

Ch 26 / Harta 78
See this is why I’m mad at Mio for not telling Subaru about everything she knows :sob:

next up issue 79

As I’m reading these, I’m tracking the individual manga on Natively with the plan to give some review love to their respective first volumes (and then not tracking later volumes). From issue 79, when ライカの星 finishes, I’ll be finishing about 1-2 per issue of what later became the first collected volume of each series I’m reading!
