A fun story about 昔話

A close Japanese friend (incidentally the reason I am learning Japanese) and I are watching The Office (US) from beginning to end (second time for me, first for her). She’s lived in USA for 20 years but still misses many cultural references, obviously. There was an episode where Michael Scott was doing the name game song with somebody’s name, and I had to explain that this was a thing people did when I was a kid (and I learned something new myself, I never realized it was a popular song from the 60s, I just thought it was something bored kids in the 80s invented). I also realized the official lyrics (of the song, and when applied to the name Shirley) are Bo-na-na fanna fo-firley, whereas I always (wrongly) heard the first word as “banana”.

Only 2 days later, I get 昔話 in my daily lessons. Such a fun word, and it really sounds like part of the name game! :joy:
