Finally, 100 months later I finished level 60 guruing the final kanji and clearing all lessons!
I have had many breaks ranging from some months to years (acutally crazy looking back that it took almost 7 years from level 14 to 25). Forgot to put in vacation mode most times but eseentially also was not motivated to continue as the reviews pile up ever so quickly after the initial levels. But I fought my way back from several 1000+ review piles. I was resetting once in the thirties a few levels back to see if that makes a difference but it also kind of felt like a defeat.
I “raced” through the mid thirties to mid fifties without doing vocab lessons as I just wanted to know the kanji for the JLPT, but it didn’t feel complete and also harmed remembering the kanji.
It has been a crazy up and down and never expected this to take so long. Took another break a year ago at around level 57 to prepare for the JLPT N2 that I barely passed.
I remember people asking in other threads “so what can you do now? can you read comfortably?” and it depends. I started reading light novels/self help books that I bought in Japan and I can read them while “enjoying” it, meaning that I don’t know every single word or meaning of a sentence, but I also don’t get too overwhelmed having to look up too many things compared to the beginning of WaniKani (maybe 10 words per page, but my sample size is small still). The kanji knowledges really helps when guessing a word and also make it fun when there are compound words that more or less just combine the meaning of its kanji without having learned the word before.
I will now focus on Anki and learning new words from the books to expand my vocabulary. Not sure how to learn new kanji, probably will just rely on pattern recognition and repetition.
Of course grammar, listening and speaking needs to be practiced separately and have enabled me to pass the JLPT N2 and conducting two usability tests with Japanese participants at work. There is still a long way to go and I don’t consider myself fluent by any means so lots left to do to achieve that!
I guess there is a lot more I could write about and I also imagined to make a bigger post like other people, but I guess this is it, I finished WaniKani (technically still need to burn every item, but leeches will stay leeches :D) and I look forward to spending my time on other things instead (though I will still probably keep on for some weeks to level up most of the recent items).
I could not really imagine another method to work to learning Kanji and I am happy I chose WaniKani and investing in the lifetime subscription which saved me a lot of money taking so long.
Thank you!
