As it is still Sunday to me while it’s also already Monday here, I figure this is the perfect time to start a daily posting thread. (side question: on which of these does your week “start”?)

For a seriously long time I’ve been meaning to put some real effort into learning Japanese, with the aim of passing the N1. (having passed N2 in 2011) Being schizoid somewhat gets in the way of reaching out to any sort of people, but I must admit certain things are more difficult in single player. Like speaking Japanese, and learning from mistakes. So, having just read a “why forum?” thread, I will give this a go.

さて、on 6 out of 7 days I’ll post some new bits of grammar I learned today* and attempt to come up with (original) examples of how to use them, so that I can include some kanji or vocab I’ve had to study or review that day. On the 7th we shall rest. Discussion is of course welcomed and I will try to -do or do not- read and reply as well.

Alright, here we go!
第１週。１日目。

  • 「動詞」～てこそ、B ＝ only after …, B
    verb in て form + こそ (note: apparently never used with a past tense)

Examples:
親になってこそ、親の苦労や気持ちがわかるものだ。（＝親になってから初めて）

Only after you’ve become a parent, can you understand a parents’ worries and feelings.

生活費を自分で稼いでこそ、自立していると言える。（＝稼ぐようになって初めて）

Once you’re paying for your own living expenses, can you really say you’re independent.

  • 「名詞」こそあれ、B ＝ although … , B
    noun / na-adj (+で）+ こそあれ / こそあるが

Examples:
苦労こそあれ、介護の仕事はやりがいがある。（＝苦労があるけれど）

Though it is very hard, nursing / care work is worth doing.

彼の日本語は小さい間違いこそあれ、ほとんど完璧だ。（＝間違いはあるけれど）

Although he makes small mistakes, his Japanese is nearly perfect.

  • 「動詞・名詞」こそすれ、X ＝ it’s …, definitely not X
    verb (renyoukei / ~masu stem) or noun + こそすれ

Examples:
あなたに感謝こそすれ、恨んでなどいません。（＝感謝しているけど、絶対に恨んでいない）

I am grateful to you and bear no grudges.

白髪はふつう増えてこそすれ、減ることはない。（＝増えることはあるが、絶対に減らない）

Normally grey hairs increase, never decrease.

  • 「名詞」こそ．．．が Y ＝ while …, Y
    noun + こそ [something] が・けれど

Examples:
父の料理は見た目こそ悪いが、とてもいい味をしている。（＝悪いのは見た目だけで）

My father’s dishes look bad, but they taste good.

このキノコは色と形こそきれいだが毒があって食べることはできない。

While the color and shape of this mushroom are pretty, it is poisonous and cannot be eaten.

I only knew からこそ… I will try to write some sentences tomorrow morning, using these constructions.

This is one of those ones I encounter from time to time, but never looked into the meaning of because I felt I could always get the gist of it. For example, from a line in the original Sailormoon anime: 「だが虹水晶は７つそろってこそ真の美しさを持つのだ」

I feel I should carve this grammar into my memory, but I’ll probably forget it in a few minutes…

Probably not, as the deconstruction explicitly says「Vますこそする」. Tbh, this one was the hardest of the four こそ to grasp in terms of meaning / translation. However, I think its usage is more like “while A might be true, certainly not B”. E.g. 蛇が卵を産みこそすれ、鳥ではありません。

Looking at the book’s examples, I strongly suspect the contradiction for this こそ is supposed to be about one vs another aspect of the aforementioned topic. E.g. [that game] は [graphics] こそ [super awesome] けれども [controls / narrative] super shitty.

第１週。２日目。


  • 「動詞」くらいなら、X ＝ instead of …, X
    (とても嫌だという気持ち）
    verb in dictionary form + くらい・ぐらい なら

Examples:
そんなことをするくらいなら、死んだほうがましだ。

I would rather die than do that.

友達を傷つけるぐらいなら、自分が我慢したほうがいい。

I’d rather endure it than hurt my friends’ feelings.



  • （～のは）「名詞」くらいのものだ。 ＝ only …
    something, noun + くらい・ぐらい + の・な ものだ

Examples:
彼女が仕事を辞めないように説得できるのは、君ぐらいのものだ。

You are the only one who can convince her not to quit her job.

僕が受かるのは、このランクの大学ぐらいのものだ。

I can only aim for universities at this level.



  • 「動詞」・「形容詞」・「名詞」ものとして、 ＝ assuming …
    verb / adj./ noun + ものとして

Examples:
中級漢字はできるものとして、上級漢字のクラスを取った。

Assuming I could pass the intermediate level, I took the advanced kanji class.

田中さんはもう来ないものとして、始めましょう。

Let’s assume Tanaka-san isn’t coming and start (without them).



  • 「動詞」ものとする ＝ … is settled / decided.
    （契約書などに多く出てくる表現）
    verb in dictionary form + ものとする

Examples:
採用試験は、毎年１０月に行うものとする。

We administer the employment examination every October.

契約の延長は、双方の同意によるものとする。

The extension of the contract must be agreed to by both parties.

民族を赤貧から救うのは、教育くらいのものだ。

To do or not to do


  • 「動詞」ことのないように ＝ so that (something) won’t . . .
    verb in dictionary form + ことのないよう（に）

Examples:
今後、このような犯罪と関わることのないように注意してください。

Hereafter, please take care not to get involved in this kind of crime.

試験に落ちることのないように、毎日勉強しよう。

Let’s study every day, so we won’t fail the test.



  • 「動詞」ことなしし、＝ without …
    verb in dictionary form + ことなしに（は）

Examples:
今の状況を知ることなしに、未来を予測することはできない。

Without understanding the currect situation, we cannot predict the future.

過去の事例を見ることなしに、解決方法は見えてこないだろう。

Without looking at past cases, there’s no way we’ll find a solution.



  • ～たことにする・～たことになる ＝ as though …
    （事実とは反対に扱うという意味）
    verb in simple past / i-adj. ~かった / na-adj. だ / noun だ / + （という）ことにする・なる

Examples:
この話は聞かなかったことにしてください。

Please pretend you did not hear that.

大学を卒業したことになっているけれど、実際は中退したらしい。

He acts like / says he graduated from university, but it seems he actually dropped out.

第2週。1日目。

Even though I surely settled on “not to do” last week, 't is a new one now, so let’s see how far we get. Maybe time for a different structure or strategy. Anyway, today I learned a couple ways to use なり…

  • 「動詞 - dict. form 」なり、
    Easiest item of the day; just means “as soon as”. E.g.:

彼は家に帰るなり、パソコンの前に座るんだ．．．
（帰ると同時に・帰ったとたんに、）

As soon as he gets home, he sits down in front of the computer …

タフな男たちは大統領に会うなり泣き出したそうだ。
（会うと同時に・会ったとたんに）

Apparently, the tough men cried the moment they saw the president.


You can also use it twice:

  • ．．．なり・・・なり
    This is one is like ~たり、~たり（する）in the sense it implies an “and such”.
    You can use it with either nouns or verbs in dictionary form. E.g.:

電話なりメールなりで、私に連絡してください。
（電話でもメールでもどの方法でも、）

Please contact me by phone or email (or whatever).

もう使わないなら、人にあげるなり捨てるなりしたほうがいいと思う。
（人にあげるとか、捨てるとか、何とかした）

If you’re not using it anymore, I think it’s better to give it away or throw it away.


And lastly there’s this trickier one:

  • ．．．なら．．．なりに・の
    “If something is [．．．], do what’s appropriate for [．．．].”
    Whatever preceeds なら (noun, verb in dict. form, i-adj or na-adj) is repeated directly after なら, though in case of full sentences you can use demonstrative pronouns. E.g.:

貧しいなら貧しいなりの生活をしなけらばならない。
（貧しいならできる範囲の～）

If you are poor, you have to live within your means / a suitable lifestyle.

出来ないなら出来ないなりに、無理をしないで少しずつやりましょう。
（出来ないなら出来る範囲で～）

If you can’t do it (this way), don’t overdo it and just go slowly.

結婚式に出席するなら、それなりの服装をするべきだ。
（それにふさわしい～）

If you’re going to attend the wedding, you should wear appropriate clothes.

Coincidentally found one IRL today!

「実際、その場で何枚か作品を見せられた。たしかにそれなりに奇麗に撮れてはいるが、とりたてて特徴のない写真ばかりだった。」

I suppose it’s the third type, among the abovementioned. Something to the effect of “while appropriately beautiful for an exhibition…”. There isn’t any なら in preceding sentences, but it looks /feels like this one.

第2週。2日目。

Today’s topic: “whether” and/or “regardless”

Again starting off with the simplest one:

  • 「疑問詞」．．．[volitional form] が・とも
    Use an interrogative pronoun + any volitional* + が or と（も） to indicate that no matter what / who / how “something” is, something something…
    ( * i.e. verb-よう、i-adj-かろう、na-adj or noun だろう・であろう）

Examples:
必要だから、どんなに高かろうがそれを買わなくてはいけない。
（どんなに高くても）

I need it, so no matter how expensive, I have to buy it.

あなたがどんなに謝ろうとも、今回は許さない。
（どんなに謝っても）

No matter how much you apologize, I won’t forgive you this time.

彼らが何歳であろうが関係ない。仕事ができればいいんだ。
（何歳でも）

It doesn’t matter how old they are, as long as they can do the job.

どこへ行こうとも、お金がなければ大変でしょう。
（どこへ行っても）

Regardless of where you’re going, surely it’ll be tough without money.



Next one is fairly similar, but explicitly compares A and B.

  • [volitional] が・と [volitional] が・と
    Use either が or と after both volitionals. Again, can be used with verbs, nouns, and both i- and na-adjectives.

Examples:
新品であろうが、中古であろうが、そんな不便なものを買うべきではないと思う。
（新品でも中古でも、どちらの場合でも）

Whether it’s new or second hand, I don’t think you should buy such an impractical thing.

明日、時間があろうとなかろうと、ぜひ連絡してください。
（時間があってもなくても）

Whether you have time tomorrow or not, please contact me.

雨が降ろうと雪が降ろうと明日の集まりに必ず行くよ。
（雨が降っても、雪が降っても）

Whether it rains or snows, I will definitely come to tomorrow’s gathering.



Lastly, there’s one that means the same as the above, but comes in a different flavor

  • 「名詞」であれ、「名詞」であれ
    Can only be used with nouns or na-adj. Can also be used in singular.

先生であれ学生であれ、この規則には従わなければならない。
（先生でも学生でも）

Whether you’re a teacher or a student, you must follow these rules.

彼女が誰であれ、特別扱いするのはおかしい。
（だれでも）

Regardless of who she is, it would be improper to give her special treatment.

As a bonus, here’s a handy new (to me) word:

  • 扱い（あつか・い）= handling, managing.
    Used both for people（like 処遇）or objects（like 処理）
    E.g. “handle with care” on a package = 「取扱注意」

Weirdly, in practice I don’t think this is a more difficult construct than なり～なり for lists, which is hardly ever used.

～なりの・に means “as fitting for～” on its own, and you’ll see it used in isolation in phrases like 自分なりの・に (“my personal～”/“my own way of～,” somewhat self-effacingly), so the construction above makes perfect sense as a sing-songy if-then pattern without having to remember anything special for it. In comparison, the なり～なり pattern is one that’s a little more obtuse.

With なら of course being the “if,” and it too can follow basically any type of word to make it a hypothetical, even outside of that pattern.

So, given that there was another example without なら:
あなたが会社を辞めた理由は私なりに理解しています。
Would this translate to something like “speaking for myself”? As in, “I don’t know about the rest but… I get it”

Back with more of the sssimilar


  • ．．．というか．．．というか
    Used with a noun, i-adj. or na-adj.
    Pretty straightforward: “not sure whether to call it A or B”

私は合格したが、友達は不合格だった。うれしいというか、残念というか、複雑な気持ちだ。(＝ うれしいと言えるし、また残念とも言える。とにかく、…）

I passed the exam, but my friend did not. It’s a complicated feeling; not sure if I’m happy or sorry.

そんなことをするとは、無茶というか、無知というか、理解できない。

I don’t know if doing something like that is reckless or ignorant, but (either way) I don’t understand.



Another one for when in doubt:

  • ～うか．．．まいか
    volitional verb + か, verb in dict.form* + まいか
    (* for くる and する the following are also accepted: こまい、しまい、すまい）

台風のような雨だ。予定通り美術館に行こうか、行くまいか。

It’s raining like there’s a typhoon. Should I go to the museum as planned or not?


  • ～うと．．．まいと
    As above: volitional verb + と (or が), verb in dict.form* + まい と (or が)
    (* for くる and する the following are also accepted: こまい、しまい、すまい）

雨が降ろうと降るまいと試合は行われます。

Regardless of whether it rains or doesn’t, the match will be held.
