Anyway, I’ll finish the beginner list first, but thanks for the insight

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto ep 17
Listening is tough in this one. Even having read the books, I have to replay a lot to catch what is being said. You’d think you’ve learned vocab by now, but no, listening is a whole 'nother beast. Taihen da wa, kore

My goal is to go through this Complete Beginner Japanese playlist on youtube, just one video a day, slow and steady! They’re pretty short videos, but my Japanese is complete beginner level so almost every word I hear is gonna be new. I’m going to rewatch the videos once or twice to try and retain as much as I can. So the goal is to try my best to acquire whatever vocab and grammar I can as a noob

Today ended up being one of those busier days, I didn’t properly get home and start listening until like 8pm. was pretty tired and didn’t want to do too much hard stuff, but I’m really motivated to try to finish this first route in ARIA
nijisanji and vtubers rant
With all the drama about nijisanji recently, I’m happy I’ve been able to find more good independent streamers during this challenge. I love the concept of being able to create a character and stream with that as separate as you like from your own identity, but I strongly dislike the carry-over from the idol industry that a lot of the bigger ones have to deal with. Like I’m not about to stop watching mio unless hololive does something super messed up, but it makes it hard to want to get invested in members when their entire identity and every stream they’ve ever done can get thanos snapped by some angry guy in a suit at any given time for basically no reason except internal company politics. Like if a streamer wants to do that themselves, then that’s unfortunate but it’s their choice. But even in normal graduation circumstances a lot of those vods just go poof forever unless people archive them.
I’ve always thought that some of the best parts of the internet are where people can be themselves, create what they want to create, and collaborate with other people to create what they want to but lack the ability to do themselves, and the indie vtuber space is definitely a great example of that. That’s especially true with how much it overlaps with indie artists and indie audio engineering/musician spaces, it’s awesome to me how all those communities can interact organically as people doing what they love doing.
Listened:
- 少女革命ウテナ いつか革命される物語 / ウテナ√ 01 - 0:30 - did you know there was a spin off visual novel for utena released only in japanese for the sega saturn in 1998? I didn’t! At least, until youtube recommended me this tiny vtuber playing it. His voice and stream setup are nice, and looking at his past broadcasts, he plays what I can only describe as “extremely based” retro games. Might be the fastest I’ve ever subbed to a channel. His twitter is really fun, too
- ARIA the NATURAL (7:57 → 8:57) 1:00 - I’d guess about halfway through ch6, this feels like another long one.
- more mio lego building - 0:30 - someday, mio will complete this lego set. It’s currently 2am for her in the vod, and there’s still about 3 hours of stream left, though, so the sleep deleriousness will be setting in soon methinks

Working hard on uni deadlines and today was a pretty full day, but it’s always nice to have FMA:B playing on one of my screens while I slowly hack away at research
See you next time!

I watched a vid about Japanese riddles:
I can’t say I knew the answer to any of them, I almost got the last one but they answered before I could, probably should have paused the video each time
At least after each time they got the answer I could work out why it was that answer.
Hey folks,
Wasn’t going to post an update today, but after stumbling on this Native Japanese podcast I had hop on to share it. Idk why but this one clicked for me and I was able to understand most of it listening slowly with very few lookups. I consider myself somewhere in the middle of N5 and my understanding has been sporadic with a lot of unfamiliar vocab, so needless to say this one was actually enjoyable for me. First time I’ve found anything that seems to be right at my level or slightly above, and there’s 70ish videos on the channel.

Weekly Italki lesson
We finished the chapter about hobbies and we are going to begin a new one on events and activities.
I impressed myself, I was able to say things I would never have imagined saying, using my new WK vocabulary. I SAID (I swear) : ゆきさんは植物を植えます。It was unbelievable. The ideas in my mind became japanese through my very mouth
Alphonse, one of my favorite characters of all times
Good luck for your uni work !

The ANN News segment about Tsukiji food counters was very interesting! Social media-fueled tourism has led to the destruction or overcrowding of many special or beloved areas over recent years, but it actually saved the restaurants in this area from closing down after covid. Because of SNS, this area changed from looking abandoned to being so full of 外国人 that waiting lines for food counters wrap around the walkways! There are so many unique and specialized food stalls there, I’m so happy to see the owners gleeful about all of the new patronage ^–^

The steam release of touhou danmaku kagura came out today and… I played like… a lot of touhou danmaku kagura… I thought about playing it in japanese at first, but there’s no voice acting and I didn’t want to try reading about how they reworked a mobile gacha card power system into an actual game system in this version. I could’ve, but I really wanted to actually play the game part of the game
Listened:
- more mio legos - 2:00 - today, we took a small break from building and ate some potato chips with chopsticks, and also talked a bit about 月の兎. I kinda lost track for a bit because there was some historical/mythical talk, and her speech is getting less and less coherent and more and more tangent jumpy
- ARIA The NATURAL - i forgot to check time but it was about 30 min - finished chapter 6!

So I got to sneak in one last update before my trip.
Today’s vid is this one:
About how to talk in a cafe, such as when entering, ordering etc.
This one felt a lot faster than usual, it was hard to keep up, I had to check if I had accidentally put it on 1.25x speed or something. Good job I’m already familiar with a few of these set phrases otherwise I think I’d be completely lost.

1 episode each, but due to various circumstances, I was not in a mood to do active listening, so I don’t know if it was really effective. Buuut, I had a good time. Still hooked on those 3 anime.
I’ve bought some of the Apothecary Diaries light novels in english because I want to know more about the story, so I bid you my farewells as there are 11 volumes

After I finished the N3 listening test video I decided to switch over to some live news for a bit. The broadcast covered the shogi title championship, which was fascinatingly nerdy and the winner was an extremely delicate and soft-spoken boy covered in heaps of layers of traditional robes haha. Following the shogi broadcast was a report of increased bear sightings in the northern prefectures, as well as a marked increase in bear attacks on people, with a rather terrifying series of clips to accompany the reporting!

Listened to three episodes on Satorireader in the same series Dialogs: Hotel. Much harder for me to listen than read. I have to play these on 0.8 or 0.9 speed because it’s a bit too fast for me.
