Finished up New Game! season 1. Overall, I enjoyed it. It’s hard to talk about a workplace anime, especially of this kind of collaborative creative project, without comparing it to Shirobako, and… it’s not Shirobako. But Shirobako is one of my favourite anime of all time, and so you can still be good and enjoyable without reaching those heights. As a language learner, they don’t really go into the process of game development the way Shirobako goes into the process of anime production, so it’s a lot more approachable without a lot of specialised language. And while Shirobako has 9001 characters and so is still giving people documentary style name tags on episode 20, it basically focuses on one team, the character design team, which helps reduce the names you have to remember
The ending theme is pretty nostalgic-feeling too and really grew on me as I watched. And there was stuff I could relate to as a developer myself. Though other things I couldn’t, since I work on enterprise products and not games (e.g. I couldn’t be a customer of the product I develop, since step 1 in using it is to agree to a 5 digit minimum yearly spend, lol. Also agile means no big release parties).
