🔊 Listen Every Day Challenge - Winter 2024 ⛄❄

The physical book needs to be bought first, but apparently the audio is free inside a free official app

On the inside front cover of the book, it says go to this website https://cdn2.alc.co.jp/sa/booco/pdf/howtoboocoj.pdf, then search for the book code 7021014.

Watched 1.5 hours of this, after a while the bgm was so calming it wouldn’t be wrong to call it iyashi-kei. Kanakana is already quite iyashi-kei danshi already and A-gata blood type. I find it very satisfying watching his play style, hahaha.

I’m definitely someone that takes the two-month approach for challenges instead of the full three months  It also seems to be a newer change [?] that challenges do three months at all, they mostly used to do a two months on + one month off cycle from what I can remember from this time last year. Amazing job to everyone sticking with it!!

Though it’s true most people are on WK to read, since it’s the most accessible skill, don’t underestimate how many people scroll your updates for inspiration on how to start their own listening journey! ^–^ And of course, I love to lurk everyone’s resources, so you will receive random likes from me in every challenge :eyes:

Finished up New Game! season 1. Overall, I enjoyed it. It’s hard to talk about a workplace anime, especially of this kind of collaborative creative project, without comparing it to Shirobako, and… it’s not Shirobako. But Shirobako is one of my favourite anime of all time, and so you can still be good and enjoyable without reaching those heights. As a language learner, they don’t really go into the process of game development the way Shirobako goes into the process of anime production, so it’s a lot more approachable without a lot of specialised language. And while Shirobako has 9001 characters and so is still giving people documentary style name tags on episode 20, it basically focuses on one team, the character design team, which helps reduce the names you have to remember

The ending theme is pretty nostalgic-feeling too and really grew on me as I watched. And there was stuff I could relate to as a developer myself. Though other things I couldn’t, since I work on enterprise products and not games :stuck_out_tongue: (e.g. I couldn’t be a customer of the product I develop, since step 1 in using it is to agree to a 5 digit minimum yearly spend, lol. Also agile means no big release parties).

Don’t call my topic deserted :face_with_steam_from_nose:

Yeah this challenge is much less taken than the read every day challenge, plus it’s the off month. But even though I’ve been slacking on daily updates, I still listen every day and like pretty much every post here. To everyone who paricipated, and everyone who is still here, I’m happy to be doing this challenge with you all

Is it really the most accessible though? Youtube is free after all.

Same! I’ve found some good Youtube channels here, especially from @Zakarius

I definitely think it’s harder to obtain a language through listening alone, not being able to ask questions without googling and subsequently learning to read in the process of finding answers. Maybe that’s just me, though

ごめんごめん
However, I’m still here, and still be in the next one
Thanks so much for opening and hosting it^^

I learnt all my first words and simple sentences in japanese by only watching anime and playing visual novel with subtitles in english, though. Listening japanese made me feel like learning it

(under details for the sake of the challenge)

Absolutely! I’m definitely not trying to make listening skills seem useless or impossible or anything, I learned my first Japanese words as a teen watching subtitled anime and it inspired me to keep learning. But if a new learner searches “how to learn Japanese” right now, nearly every search result is for which textbooks to buy, which apps to use, and tons of reddit posts all of which recommend various reading-based resources, wanikani included. Even the “video results” on Google send you to videos that teach you to read while you listen.

By “accessible skill” I mean the skill with the easiest-to-access resources for advancement for someone with zero access to native speakers. You can learn so much through listening! But advancement through listening is not as accessible for the average learner. Not impossible, just not as accessible.

:eye_in_speech_bubble: Charade Maniacs, end of Iochi’s route and beginning of Ebana’s route.
It’s not active listening though, as I’m totally exhausted from the free talk session I had earlier today. It’s a miracle when I catch a word from the dialogues tonight  (and don’t tell the “read every day challenge”, but I’m taking the day off :yum:)

To Taiyousea

Yes, you’re right, when you want to take the learning seriously, you definitely have little choice but to turn towards written resources.

It’s funny because on WK, once a batch or 2, I learn how to recognize the written form of words that I’ve known the pronunciation and the meaning for a looong time. If 方法 didn’t really surprised me, I must admit that when I saw 人間 I was much more perplexed. And the list goes on…

耳から覚える 語彙 トレーニング N1 (1/17-31). Try recording with Audacity. Makes me conscious about how my pace, intonation, consonants and vowels work, not just pitch. Speak too hard, I shouldn’t try to force… Also, difference between 好意 and 恋. Also, my laptop microphone isn’t very good (I think).

IME doesn’t work in Audacity, so only Romaji. I chose Hepburn variant here, though.

YUYU, the latest one

Listened to Kanae’s white day binaural asmr (1h 20min) while I was doing paperwork with deadline tomorrow.

Daily brief x2

耳から覚える 語彙 トレーニング N1. Next set of vocabularies, but I didn’t bring the book with me today. Maybe I can check on Sunday. A vocab in a sentence let me wondered. (Heading vocab are just OK to look up.)

I watched Frieren ep 14 today.

Watched the first episode of New Game!! today. Not to be confused with New Game!, which I watched last week. The funny thing is, it’s not the only anime that’s decided on “Let’s add another exclamation mark” as their sequel naming scheme.

:headphones: Home post // March 16 :snowman: :snowflake:

Watched Kusuriya ep 22 and Yubisaki to Renren ep 11. I got confused about Kusuriya because I’m currently reading volume 11 of the novel and when the episode started I was like “this isn’t where we left off…?”. I can’t believe I was lost :joy:

And today I watched two more episodes of New Game!! So far for these animes they have been more in the extensive kind of listening where I just take what I can get and only e.g. rewind and pause if I’m not able to follow what’s going on. Today I did a bit of experimenting with a bit more of an intensive approach, picking out examples of grammar where I’m not so good and adding them as self study sentences on Bunpro which I’m trying out too.

耳から覚える 語彙 N1. There are exercises in the book (for vocabularies, written). I’ll have to spare time for that too. Maybe the day after tomorrow. (Maybe on top of relistening or something.)

I didn’t check in these past few days, but I listened a looot of japanese every day as I’ve been playing :eye_in_speech_bubble: Charade Maniacs for hours.
Dazai’s route was breath-taking, he might be my favorite character so far. Beginning Haiji’s route tonight (final route, I wonder what revelations on the world still await :eyes:)
