I’m familiar with すごい, so I get the meaning of すげえ after seeing on the vocab sheet that they are the same thing. But my question about it is, is it just a more casual way of speaking? Or a way of saying it from a slightly different dialect?
OK, so I read this weeks pages. That wasn’t so bad, I found most of it easy enough to understand, with a little help from the vocab sheet (though not that much actually).
First of all よつば seems very sweet and adorable
The casual speech will take some getting used to, just because as a beginner of course we learn the ‘correct’ way to say things from textbooks etc. I think reading this will actually be really helpful though, seeing how people actually speak. It’s interesting to me that there seems to be a fair bit of ‘clipping’ of words, for example とーちゃん missing the initial お. As a native English speaker from Yorkshire in the UK, I come from an area where this is a very common thing in my accent too, shortening words (or dropping them entirely) in everyday speech, so I guess it’s just a similar thing to that.

Summary
I’m wondering if they’re moving to the city from a rural area or something. WIth よつば getting all excited by the number of houses, and thinking that a crowd of kids near the school was a festival, it seems like she hasn’t seen that many people in one place before, plus waving to everyone like she expects to know everybody in town.
I want to carry on reading! But I don’t want to get ahead of the group, hehe.
Oh well, guess I’ll have to go and do my boring old WaniKani reviews instead!
It just occurred to me after writing that though, that it will probably be a good idea to read the pages again, in a day or two, see if I can just understand it all still without using the vocab sheet. My own spaced repetition.
Just skimmed this week’s reading- I’m pretty happy with how much I understood on the first pass! The よつばと deck on BP definitely helped a lot with specific vocabulary. I think tomorrow I’ll go back and read through again, noting the vocab words and grammar points that are unfamiliar, and look them up!
Starting the volume 1 Bunpro deck a week ago or so was a lifesaver for me. I didn’t have to look up any of the vocab because of it which made reading the designated pages so smooth. Otherwise, I would have had to look up what was basically the very first word, ひっこし along with a couple of others. I get so disappointed in myself when I am (allegedly) around N4 but still don’t know words like 着いた. But! That’s what practice and studying are for!

Happy I understood 夏休み, while it’s still a lesson I need to do here. Also very timely, as it’s also almost time for my summer break.. Will do another reading later this weekend with the vocabulary sheet.

she’s saying “there are so many people” 「ひとか いっぱい いる」 and in the next panel she’s asking if there’s a festival today 「きょうはまつりか！？」 presumably because she’s not used to seeing crowds like this. and i think her dad’s reply is, “it’s a school, a school. i think summer break begins tomorrow”
seems like a cute story. trying to resist the urge to read forward, cuz i don’t wanna get ahead of the group or burn myself out. looking forward to this.

THANK YOU I DID GET IT RIGHT THEN. I’m so happy. There was only one bubble that was really hard the one about her having to wave for her dad because he is driving. The sentences seem a little harder than Keseran mostly because of how casual this stuff is.
I think also because Yotsuba speaks like a elementary school child so a lot of her bubbles do not use Kanji (at least the first 9 pages are like this)
Read this weeks pages yesterday and to be honest I hardly understood any of it without my notebook except for the first few where she was just entering town and saying to wave and the dad replied saying something about school and summer vacation, remembering particles is still very tricky for me. Oh and the part where she was saying hi to jumbo was really overwhelming because there was so much text and vocab I didn’t know. But I had a lot of fun reading it and can’t wait for more!
