勉強

Well everyone, I’m not sure about the format of my study log for the moment, but that is of little consequence (surely), because the most important thing is the studying itself!

I officially signed up for the N2 today. My sentiments are much the same. I have a LOT of material to cover if I want to have a chance at passing, and with my current schedule, I’m honestly not sure that I’ll be able to make it this year. Nonetheless, I shall try my best and see what happens.

Mostly, I am hindered by my poor reading skills, and painfully aware that I need to consume, consume, consume to up my reading speed and comprehension. I feel such pressure to keep my study time up for SRS (anki, wanikani), because if I miss one day (or one session) the reviews can pile up drastically and feel overwhelming. But thinking about it, I really need to dedicate time to actual consumption of written Japanese.

I have a study plan written out, much like my plan for the N3. When I have a bit more time, I might post it later. But I may not be as successful at sticking to the plan this year. It’s a heavy workload, and I’m busy enough already.

My basic study outline is as such:

  • Keep up with Wanikani and Anki routine to keep SRS in check
  • Start out a study session by reading an article
  • Work through a section of Kanzen (grammar, vocab, or reading).

There’s some listening practice and mock exams sprinkled in as well, but I’ll keep it a secret for now. Also I want to casually continue with コンビニ人間.

Speaking of reading articles, I finally downloaded Yomitan and WOW is it a game changer! I have been skeptical about auto-creating Anki cards, but it’s actually awesome at this point in the game. I read through an NHK article yesterday, and one again today. Being able to highlight and immediately see definitions for unknown words increased my speed tenfold. Adding them to my Anki deck with a click of a button makes word-mining actually feel like a fun game.

I’m incredibly excited about that feature and kinda jazzed to keep collecting new words for my Anki deck. And in the end, I did have to look up a lot of words, but I feel like I was able to read a bit of an advanced article?

Today
Get Wanikani reviews down to 0 (50 more) (I am behind on WK and my accuracy is hella low. Getting apprentices down to 80 before I move forward).
Read an NHK article (I read this one)
Finish the grammar questions for kanzen 16 +18 (I skipped 17 by accident)

2 more lil goals to go, and then it’s time to relax 'til tomorrow.

AW thank you so much??? That’s so flattering :sob:

Ohh I’m so glad you mentioned that was a thing you liked?? I’m still experimenting with the format of my posts but I definitely think I’d like to include more pictures like that! Or more talking about the content of what I’m reading, maybe.

And yessss I’m definitely trying as hard as I can to read as much as possible!! I feel like it just really helps to reinforce patterns from grammar and to really hammer home the nuance of certain words (why is x used here instead of y), plus I pick up a ton of vocab while I’m reading since I’m always sentence mining with Rikaitan (exactly like Yomitan)! I have like… one pre-made deck I use that’s based on the Tango books (so I’m still getting JLPT vocab) and then I have my own separate decks with my supplemental stuff from my reading, so it’s a good mix of things that really help and that are also really relevant to what I read!!

Oh that makes SO much sense actually. Tbh before I was on ADHD meds I hit the point where I could hardly even read like, a casual text message from someone (or follow a verbal conversation!) because it had gotten so bad. I really doubt I could do what I do now with Japanese lksjdgljlkl Even when I was in uni AND on meds I’d still sometimes have a friend just be On Call with me to have accountability and force myself to work since it was stuff I was way less interested in LOL I wonder if the book clubs would work for you here (because of external accountability)? Or if that would still be an issue if it’s like… you still don’t have someone actively doing something with you at the time?

Aw yay, join me!! I’ll definitely be following your journey, too!

RE: Kanzen Master: the points you listed about it make me think it would work really well for me LOL Even the textbooks I have now are ones where I mostly just go through the grammar, and kind of ignore most of the other content! Especially since I do so much reading on my own, too lkjsldgj Using them as a supplement definitely sounds nice, and I at least like doing grammar exercises for certain things if needed!

I feel like finding the balance is tough! With my SRS stuff, I try to keep it so that I’m doing around ~30 minutes a day, and if I go over that… it means I need to dial back how many new words I’m learning. I usually do 20-30 new words a day, and my Anki cards are just based on recognition (JP > EN or JP monolingual definition) and that helps keep the Anki reviews down for me. But yeah, it really needs to be supplemented by reading or some kind of exposure to really absorb it!

YESSS Yomitan is incredible!! I have mine set up so that it also automatically makes them into targeted sentence cards (which I find helps disambiguate if there’s multiple meanings PLUS makes the word more memorable for me) and it’s been such a massive help. There’s also Yomininja for games (or videos) that lets you auto-create cards the same way! And then using Yomitan alongside something like Mokuro or ッツ Reader for manga or ebooks is huge. That’s how I do all my reading and it makes it feel way more manageable!

slkdgjslgj okay I think I probably talked enough, but!! I got excited about everything you were mentioning LOL

Hello Sundrop! I am relatively new to learning Japanese as I originally started on Duolingo Spring 2025 and then switched to WaniKani June 2025. I have become especially interested in learning Japanese because I want to work as an ALT with the Jet Program. I was reading the community forums and saw that you worked at Jet for 2 years. I was wondering if you were open to giving some advice on the interview or would read through my application before I submit it. The application doesn’t open until fall, but I figured I would reach out now in case you didn’t see this until a later time. I would also love to hear about your experience in Japan working with Jet. My type A personality can’t help but want to get all the information I can get, and I am so curious about the program. Aside from Jet, I appreciate all the good resources you provided in this forum.

So nice to see your reply!! I just finished reading my article for the day and your reply imbues me with more reading energy hahah. Apparently a crazy fireball was seen falling over Kyuushu last night? Link

Man I’m so curious what the right ADHD meds could do for me… I dream of being able to sit down and concentrate on some reading for a while no problem… but in the meantime I love the calling a friend thing! I’ve been inviting the people around me to study together as much as possible, and body doubling seriously helps.

Oo I’ll be so interested to hear your thoughts if you give Kanzen master a try! I think it could be the ~perfect pairing~ for a bit of avid reading.

Ah man my SRS is like ~an hour on anki and ~an hour on WK total recently! I do about 10 new terms a day with Anki and 15 items on WK, but I’ve gotten behind on reviews recently so it is not looking too good.

Omg I’m so gonna play around with this! And THANK YOU for the other program recommendations!! I feel like I’m in a place where I need to consume new vocab like lunch.

Really excited to see your updates in your study log too!

O hey! Welcome to my study log!
I’m very excited to hear about you starting out your journey with Japanese! Welcome to the community

Yes absolutely, I was on JET for a couple years, and was lucky enough to have advice from some former JETs when applying. To be honest, it has been about 6 years since I applied and went through the interview process, so my memory might be a little rusty. I’m happy to take a look at your application if you’d like! I wonder if there’s a way to share documents in a PM or something here?

Off the top of my head, this information is very dusty, but–
They might be especially interested in folks who have experience or interest with working with kids. Aside from the Japanese and intercultural aspect, I remember being asked some questions about working with students and things I might like to bring to the classroom. Before the interview I think I prepared by coming up with a few activities and I could do with a class, and accumulated all information about myself that could be applicable to a classroom job.

For example, I had dance teaching experience and had worked with kids camps in a few different settings, so I made sure to reflect on that. I knew I could use my dance skills to help communicate language through gestures and games, and my teaching experience to create lesson plans. I also had experience with intercultural friendships and helping edit the papers of some of my non-native-English-speaker friends. Of course these are just my personal experiences, but I think there are a ton of other skills that lend themselves to classroom teaching. Some of my good friends on Jet had experience working at children’s museums or in creative fields. Creative skills (visual art, video-making, theatre) are wildly helpful in creating entertaining lessons.

To be honest, I think pretty much any of your skills or passions could be angled to align with aspects of being an ALT.

There is probably more information buried in here somewhere, but for the most part, it can be helpful to reflect not only on why you want to go teach in Japan, but what about you specifically makes you a great fit for classroom teaching in a second language.

Ya, feel free to ask any questions tho! Happy studies!

YAYYY I’m so glad!! Tbh I don’t do articles as often just because they’re less motivating for me (I try to gravitate to stuff I know is related to my interests to appease my ADHD brain and sustain motivation which is why I’m mostly reading manga) but I will read this out of solidarity LOL

One day!! I really hope you can find meds that work for you!!! But the external accountability thing with friends helps so much. It’s part of why I even like to yell online about the things I’m reading to help me Keep Going lkjslgdjl

I’ll definitely let you know when I try it! I was picking away at Tobira (almost done) in addition to a handful of online sources so I’ll check it out after that!

WHOA that’s a lot!! No wonder you were feeling like it was stopping you from getting immersion time in :sob: I wonder if getting your reading speed up would help with the reviews? Or if it’s also untreated ADHD slowing you down (since I know my processing speed was also waaaay way worse before I was treated)… Either way I hope you can find some way of reducing your SRS time :sob: 頑張れ!!

If you ever need help with getting any of them set up, lemme know!! Otherwise, I really hope all these tools work for you!!

Also :eyes: I saw that you’re watching Terrace House! I used to be really into it years ago and watched a bunch of the different seasons, with the very first being my favourite!!

Thank you for taking the time to read over my message. I know it’s been a while since you applied for JET, but I would be grateful to have someone read over my application essay. If PM is not possible, I will just link a PDF. Since applications have not yet opened, I may reply to this thread in a month or so with my completed written application.

Thanks for the advice on the interview aspect. Any information is appreciated because I really feel like I am going into this with a blank slate. I don’t have much experience with children, but I do have experience in mentorship roles in college through being a resident assistant and a peer mentor. I think I can find a way to connect my passions with being an ALT without any direct experience with children.

I will keep you updated on the process as the applications open. I appreciate all your help from this reply, thank you.

:fallen_leaf: :blossom: Dashboard Tour and General Update :jack_o_lantern: :pie:

I reached level 40, the lemons :lemon: of life took over, and all Japanese study progress stalled for the entirety of September. I am slowly rebuilding some study habits, but nothing too intense has been established. C’est la vie y’all.

The dashboard UI update was an exciting impetus for returning to Wanikani after fluttering in and out of Vacation Mode for over 30 days. As you will see, with 200+ items in apprentice, I need to weather the storm of reviews for a while before returning to lessons. I’m very excited to see the forecast illustrations that aren’t a durtle being blown away in a typhoon or perishing under three suns.

I will first say that I’m generally quite excited about this update! I think the customizable aspect is fresh and exciting, and I like that I’m able to put things where I like and remove features I don’t use. I’m grateful to the WK team for all the hard work they put into this design! And the illustrations… are so… cute.

I like reading through the community comments because I also see some places where UI improvements can be made. But for the most part, I think it’s a super refreshing update and is going to do wonders getting me through the last 20 levels.

Let me do a little tour of my dashboard so I can spill my thoughts~

~here we are~

Overall Layout
After playing with many fun configurations, I realized it was easiest for me to look at when arranged like a typical webpage (or somewhat like the old dash), with a sidebar and main content section.

Main Content

Here's my hub!

Of course I have my lessons and reviews right at the top, my most important avenues.

Below that I want to keep an eye on my level progress. I’m getting used to this new widget layout, but I think I like it so far. I like seeing exactly how many items are in each level, and how many I’ve guru’d.

Finally, I’m soso happy to have a heatmap again. Heatmap has done wonders to keep me on track with Anki, and now that this is back, I’m going to be so motivated to fill in my square each day. It’s really interesting to see how much time I’ve spent on Wanikani this past year! (I installed the Dashboard Heatmap Dynamic Coloring Script because almost all my days are 100+ reviews and 100% dark red was overpowering my screen).

Main Sidebar

At the top left I’ve placed this study streak widget for Ultimate Motivation. the turtles and durtles are deeply adorable, so I am highly motivated to do at least one review every day to keep them appearing.

Below this I have the review forecast widget, which I reference frequently to plan my review times and know what to expect for the days ahead. I’m so in love with the weather illustrations.

Finally I have the item spread. For the most part I like to keep my apprentices ~100, so this is useful reference. Because that’s all the information I really need, I like that the small version of this widget is not super flashy and that I can click around if I want a deeper breakdown.

Lower Content

Finally we have the content I scroll for! As you can see, I elected to omit several widgets such as recent mistakes and item lists, as I never really used these much and they were taking up visual space. I’ve also omitted the correct percentage and days studied widgets. I know for a fact I’ll often fall outside the “learning zone”, so I don’t think the accuracy widget will feel very motivating for me personally. I also have been studying for so many years at this point that I don’t think that “days studied” will do much for me either.

However! Here’s what I’ve got:

Recent mistakes widget taking up nice big space on the left. I love how easy it is for me to play around with these cards when I’m bored in between reviews. Even if I only see 5 or so cards, when they come up in a review session later, I remember them. I would like to see a shuffle feature.

Extra study on the right if I feel so inclined (I do not often feel so inclined D:)

And a place to relax and feel good about myself at the bottom! My portal to the WK community, and a tracker showing the number of reviews I completed today. I wasn’t sure at first if I would like tracking this, but having it tucked away at the bottom, accompanied by a cozy illustration of being tucked away in bed, feels pretty satisfying, like YA I DID THAT.

Ok, that’s all for now.
Nobody asked for this and I don’t expect anyone to read it but settling into a new dash was a fun step in my WK journey.
Seeing more chill, adorable weather illustrations is huge motivation for paring down this apprentice pile.

Congrats on level 40!! What a huge achievement :flexed_biceps: I can relate to how life can give you lemons, but it’s great that despite it all you’re back at it again.

I’ve also been enjoying the new dashboard layout too. At first, when I didn’t know they made a heatmap widget, I was devastated. That was literally one of my motivations to keep coming back to learning kanji. However, after I discovered the widget, I’m now in cloud nine. I think this update is the one I enjoyed the most out of all the updates over the years. The illustrations make me so happy to be on this site
Wishing you luck in rebuilding your Japanese study habits! You got this :durtle_hello:

Thank you!! It looks like you’re almost there yourself

The return of the heatmap is a gamechanger. I’ve used Anki every day for like 550 days now, even if it’s just 1 review, because I don’t want to see a blank square on my map. When the Wanikani heatmap script broke I felt so blind and demotivated haha ;-; it’s so nice to see a record of all the effort that goes into this again!! And I want to keep showing up and filling my boxes to the end!

I’m really enjoying this update, too! It’s also been motivating to open up Wanikani on my desktop instead of the Tsurukame app, which is actually great for my retention, as I use Anki flashcard mode in the app. The illustrations are everything

Thank you for the support! Have fun with your studies!

Greetings from level 42

The JLPT N2 is in a few weeks, and to be honest, with too much going on for the past six months, I haven’t studied properly. Nevertheless, I am still going to take the test and see what happens. At the very least, it will be a good experience and preparation for next year.

In the interest of a little positivity, here are the things I was able to accomplish Japanese-wise in this time:

  • I finished a 2nd Japanese novel, コンビニ人間, thus finishing my Japanese reading goal for the year! I have to look up a lot of words, but grammatical flow is becoming way more intuitive.
  • I continued with Wanikani and Anki. I pushed through a plateau on level 40, and started adding new N2 words to my Anki rotations.

Here’s a look at my WK progress! For various life reasons I spent a longgg time on level 40.

Even though the JLPT is swiftly approaching, I have reevaluated and redesigned some of my Japanese study goals. I’d like to start using this log as a way to stay on track again. I think I’ll detail my plans in a separate post, as a little refresh.

Refresh.

New Goal.
I began Wanikani seriously 5 years ago, in March of 2021. Since then, I’ve lived in Japan, passed the N4 and N3, completed elementary and intermediate textbooks, worked up to 5000+ cards in a 500+ day streak in Anki, got a job as an interpreter, finished reading 2 novels. Very big hooray! (I have to remind myself of all that bc I’ve honestly felt so stuck at every moment of this journey).

Here is the meat and potatoes: Wanikani has always been lower priority, the first to go so I could learn specific vocab for work, study for a test, practice conversation, do general life stuff, etc. Thus, it has taken me 5 years to get to level 42. My progress has been speckled with interruptions and breaks.

I am not disappointed about this, because I was able to develop Japanese skills I cared lots about, and encountering vocabulary in life and other studies has made WK lessons intuitive and fast. I feel confident about the kanji and vocab I’ve learned here, even though it’s taken a long time.

But now I am at the point where it’s come to this: I am tired, and I want to complete Wanikani.

I am dreaming of the day when I can finish my SRS reviews in ~30 minutes and move on to fully devote my energy to other forms of study. I’ve spent most of the last 2 years doing WK reviews 3/4 times a day. I want my mornings and evenings to be open again! To engage with other stuff! I’m on the 天国 levels but treading water in 漢字地獄!! (I’m being dramatic, I am so grateful for this program, I just want to be done already lol).

My focus has always been on the most pressing matters, and for the past 2 years, I have been working hard to get my Japanese to a survivable level for my job. Now that I feel more confident in that area, I think it’s time.

I want to make Wanikani my priority, finish all the lessons to level 60, eat cake. And free up my brain space for other studies, with the confidence of 2000+ kanji to guide me.

:cloud_with_lightning_and_rain:

The last time I looked up the fast levels on Wanikani, I think there were only like 6 or 7. Upon a recent lookup, it seems that levels 43-60 are fast. PERFECT TIMING.

Here are my rules:

  • Prioritize finishing Wanikani.
  • Don’t let speed get in the way of knowledge.
  • Don’t overwhelm the review Queue.

At my best, recently I’ve been finishing levels in 9-11 days. I know it’s possible to finish fast levels in ~3 days, but I don’t want to wreck myself with reviews and tank my accuracy (which I totally would if I tried that).

I’m aiming for a 7 day level up from levels 43-60. 15 lessons a day, as usual, but strategically done so I finish all necessary Kanji lessons within the first 3 days.

The beauty of a 7 day level is that each day of the week can become routine, specifically dedicated to a certain task. I made this little schedule, printed it, and stuck it where I do my reviews. (The title formatting is a lil off in this screenshot, but u get the point).

Kanji lessons on the days where I have the most time and energy (Weekends and Monday).

Joys of Finishing Wanikani at this Pace

  • More time and brain energy for dedication to other types of study.
  • Free brain space, no more having to worry about multiple daily reviews after 5 years.
  • Confidence of 2000+ to support my reading practice.
  • If I stick to pace I can finish in Spring 2026, leaving the rest of the year to prepare confidently for the next JLPT.
  • Cake!

Biggest Challenges:

  • Consistency on Weekends. I have been all over the place with Wanikani on weekends, because my time becomes abstract. To combat this, I’ve set 3 alarms for weekends, to remind myself to do lessons and reviews.
  • Holidays and Events. It’s the holiday season, AND the JLPT is coming up. This means more disruptions to my routines than usual. To fight the forgetfulness, I’m going to use my alarms + calendar to remind me to do reviews at certain times. Holidays shouldn’t be too bad, but I can’t lie, the weekend of the JLPT, this may all fall apart if I’m trying to conserve my exhausted brain. I’ll give myself a pass if things get off track, and get back to consistency after the JLPT is over.
  • Behind on Vocab. I won’t consider myself done until I finish the last Vocabulary lessons on level 60. If I prioritize Kanji lessons, I will fall behind on vocab for each level. This will make it more difficult to reinforce the Kanji meanings and pronunciations. For the sake of time, I’m planning to focus best I can on memorizing the Kanji themselves, and let the vocab lessons come when they do, even if I get to be a few levels behind…

Finally… can I use this study log as a tool to stay motivated and track my progress? We shall see! The study itself is the priority, so if the log can’t be done sometimes, I won’t beat myself up. I’ll go ahead and make a simple format, with the idea of posting on Saturday level ups.

We’re off darlings~ Bit of a late start, but I’ve leveled up! It’s time for the FAST LEVELS. I’ve completed my lessons for today (12 kanji, 3 radicals). Reminds me a bit of doing vanilla WK in the olden days, when lessons weren’t mixed, and I’d do nothing but Kanji lessons for a few days.

I’m currently at a little house party in the middle of the inaka of my country. I’m here with a coven of liberal old-guard hippie musicians. The night started off with a John-and-Yoko-style bed-in protest concert. I don’t play, so I did my Wanikani lessons to the beat of banjos.

The music’s going strong and the night is warm. Off to party and celebrate level 43.

Time to keep pace!

Sounds like the perfect place to be doing your WK. I did mine this morning sitting outside in a cafe after doing my weekly farmers market shop. Was surprised when the new barista knew my standard order.

And congrats on leveling up. I have too!

Credit to Pinterest for this photo; but I chose it because it’s from the region where I am, and it looks just like this outside~

What a beautiful, romantic kind of moment. I love doing my studies in amazing atmosphere. Congratulations on your level up! Level 43 whee

Just here for a little update. I did my first (and perhaps only) N2 practice test today, with low expectations. I used the #2 practice test on Bunpro here.

To my complete surprise, I got a score of 81%! With almost 100% accuracy on the longer questions at the end! Woohoo! I also finished the reading/grammar/vocab section with 20 minutes to spare, so if this is anything like the actual test, I could have some time to check answers.

Idk how close these practice tests are to the actual JLPT, but I have a smidge more confidence having done one. Maybe, just maybe, I have a chance this year after all.

My best sections were reading comprehension and listening. My worst were vocabulary and GRAMMAR! Boo. Only a few weeks until the test tho, so I’ll consult with my tutor to see what would be best to revise now.

I definitely need to bulk up my vocabulary. I was able to guess the meaning of a lot of words, but there were so many I had never seen before.

Even if I can’t pass the N2 this year, I’m a couple months out from finishing Wanikani and building up other areas of study! :heart_hands:

Well, that was a miscalculation. I’ve just completed a 5 day level. I’ve not had such a fast level since level ONE. Fast levels INDEED. Huzzah!!!

Fortuitously, I have tomorrow through Sunday off, so I’m going to focus carefully and forge ahead with level 44 kanji. The completionist in me aches for the level 42 and 43 vocab lessons I’m leaving in the dust. But I know I won’t consider myself done until I’ve completed them all, so even if it takes me a long ass time on level 60, that’s ok.

A 5 day level? I can scarcely believe it. Onward.
