Many questions so far! I’ve watched some of the anime, but I really want to know why Asa is being kept in jail and what important work she’s supposedly doing. I was surprised that nobody is allowed to see her, to the point where Yuru’s friend questions if she exists.
The furigana in my physical copy is truly tiny! Otherwise, this reading wasn’t too bad, as far as vocab and grammar. 下界 is an interesting term for the literal “lower world,” meaning down the mountain, since Jisho says it can also mean “this world (as opposed to heaven)” in Buddhism. Also I definitely giggled at 竜の屁 it’s NOT “fart dragon,” it’s NOT
In two minds as to whether I should just read all of chapter 1 this week and end up with a gap week, or put it off until next week and have no gap. I don’t love breaking up chapters so I’d rather just read it all in one go (I get that it’s like this for pacing reasons etc, no issue with the club choosing to do it this way, just doesn’t work nicely with my brain)
The first chapter is split into three weeks. And have a kind of a cliffhanger at the end of week 1.

I went in to my first reading of this knowing nothing about the series. (This reading is not my first, to be clear, though it is my first in Japanese.) After the first dozen or so pages, I’d just about managed to convince myself that it was set in some fantasy world that resembles medival Japan and has dragons with trails that exactly resemble airplane vapour trails. So when we hit the mid-chapter twist at the end of this week’s reading, I was absolutely floored.
Fixed everything with the vocab sheet now, I hope So excited to start reading and getting to whatever twist everyone is talking about.
I agree that I also prefer reading at least 1 chapter per week rather than stopping in the middle, but at the same time I think it is necessary for the pacing and for those who are challenged to keep up.
I have to agree that, the twist got me twisted And there appears to be a lot of mysteries in this manga
I’m pretty sure the dragon flapped their wings so hard that it parted the space in the sky creating the special “dragon’s fart”
I have a weird question regarding the names of the characters: why is ユル called that and not 夜? My assumption is that the sister is named “morning” in contrast to her appearance or the shadows and darkness always surrounding her (or maybe because she was the one born in the morning). With that logic, the brother (which is the other half) should be named 夜 as in the night. Is the current name a wordplay of some kind or is there another reason (or maybe I’m just hallucinating and cooking too much)?

Usually Bookwalker has different numbering digitally and you’ll have to keep switching pages and counting them to make sure you’ve found the right page

So I went to google and looks like it’s a mild spoiler! And I’m up to 9th volume (out of 12 already, when did this happen? Time surely fly fast!) and I think it wasn’t mentioned (or I missed it).
The answer to this question is a small spoiler, but it will get partially answered at the start of chapter four. If you really want to know now, though: it’s dialectical.
So excited to get started with this! I tried reading FMA in Japanese when I was a baby Japanese learner about a million years ago and found I had bitten off WAY more than I could then chew, so it’s crazy to start another Arakawa series and find it an easy read (barring a few things like the dragon’s fart of course).
Speaking of that fart, I love the foreshadowing here and the way it plays with your expectations. When I saw that panel, my immediate thought was “oh, a contrail - but of course that can’t be right.” And lo and behold! Anyway as a big FMA fan (it absolutely dominated my middle school years, back when it was still being actively released), I’m anticipating a lot of interesting surprises worldbuilding-wise.
