魔女の宅急便・Kiki's Delivery Service 🧧 Repeat Club

Thank you! Much appreciated.

I guess we would then use only the public one in all locations (if we can edit them…)? To make the older version invisible for us, so to speak.

I guess that would make sense - I feel kind of bad messing around with the original OP, like it ought to be preserved or something :joy: but there’s no point having a link to the original spreadsheet if we just have an objectively improved version.

Yep, exactly my thinking! :+1:

Wow, it did more than arrive in time. Six days was all it took to get these books from scattered in a warehouse to my doorstep, even in this crisis.

Amazing! They’re all like-new! I wasn’t expecting them to be hardcover, either. And as a bonus, they’ve all got fun little string bookmarks built in. I’m excited to start now. I might not be able to stop myself from reading ahead a bit.

And, of course, since you get more for your money when shipping DHL with a larger order, I piled a few more books into my order. All manga, including a Shakurel Planet book that I thought was a mini poster, but turned out to be a big ol’ children’s manga!

Greatly looking forward to starting this.

I always do that too!
My shelves are full of book I might never get to, just cause it saved on shipping

While I was looking for something else, I found this thread by @Radish8 about using FloFlo to pre-learn vocab and read a first book in Japanese. Since we have a month to go before we start reading, would it be a good idea to prepare for reading using FloFlo? Are any of you using it for Kiki now?

I am. More specifically I’m using the same list on Koohi which is… the newer project for FloFlo I guess.

This because I experienced some errors while fetching the vocabulary list from the book and Raionus himself/herself pointed me there.

Sor far it’s fine for me, I’m skipping most of the vocabulary already present in WaniKani

If you do use it, I’d recommend only prelearning common words. Maybe start with frequency 10 and then work your way down. And keep in mind that those vocab lists commonly have misparsed words, words with so many definitions that you don’t know which is actually used in context, and other gotchas.

To give an actual example, some people were prelearning vocab for 時をかける少女 and were surprised that the word 和子 (“son of a person of high social standing”) was used so often. Well, that would be because it was the main character’s name…

I’m so in I’ve just ordered a physical copy! Let’s do this

As antibody mentioned, Koohi.cafe is replacing FloFlo. If you’re new to it, there’s probably little point making a FloFlo account over a Koohi one. Although Koohi is still being fleshed out / doesn’t yet have all the features FloFlo did, the latter will disappear at some point, and is not currently being supported.

And I second what seanblue said - I do go over that in the thread you linked, but I really would recommend starting at high frequencies and working your way down. Definitely don’t bother with frequency 1 or 2, at least until you’re actually reading and can parse them.

Oh. My. God. This was me at the beginning of this year when i attempted to read this and i felt so confused that i stopped after the first 2 pages…

As far as I can tell, there doesn’t seem to be any way of ‘starting at high frequencies’ through koohi, unless I’m missing a setting somewhere. It seems to just throw all the vocabulary in the book at you in an order it decides and ask you if you want to learn it or not.

You can definitely do it, though, since I have done it as well. Order is the order of first appearance (so it doubles as a dictionary if you use it while reading along)

Edit: I just checked and it’s on the right of the screen (min frequency)

Since you’re listing websites for purchasing the book, I’d like to suggest this one primarily for the European audience out there (their warehouse is in the EU but they deliver everywhere): Verasia.

Thanks for sharing. I wonder how their prices work out once you take shipping into account  the actual book is a fair bit more.

I’ve created a new spreadsheet for us to use - link is in the OP.

I felt it might be best not to copy and paste across from the original spreadsheet, given that the order is apparently random anyway. It will still be a useful reference to work from, but I think it will require more effort to edit the existing entries than to start from scratch.

Standard delivery (around 5 days) within Europe costed me 4,50 euro. With the book itself it’s 13,20 € in total :moneybag:

Thanks! I didn’t look for it until I’d already generated the list. Just added all the frequency 10+ words that I’m not 100% confident on. If I rip through those too quickly, maybe I’ll go back and add some less frequent words too.

EDIT: Turns out that, even when it works, I really don’t care for Koohi’s interface. Instead, I fiddled with the chapter 1 page of the old vocab spreadsheet until I could cleanly export it as a tab-delimited file, and import as an anki deck. I’ll share the deck if anyone’s interested.

With less than a month until reading starts, here’s a look at the chapter one words you should already know (and hopefully recognize) from WaniKani vocabulary. Up through level 49, WaniKani covers almost 30% of the words used in chapter one.
