銭天堂 ・ Zenitendou, The Mysterious Sweet Shop! (Beginner Book Club)

I’m going to try :raising_hand_woman:t3: (but it’s going be difficult for me…)

I ended up buying volume 2 with a recent CDJapan order, since I’ve enjoyed the first one so much. It’s been a really fun read! I also still learn new vocabulary, especially in the onomatopoeia department.

It’s not letting me edit the title, but maybe we should remove ‘just started’ from the title since we’re almost done with the book.

Hi everyone, just a side note for the Ch5 of the Zenitendou.
In case you open that and suddenly get a feeling of “why it is so hella difficult, I might be not ready for this book etc”, then just know that this seems to be one of the most challenging Zenitendou chapters in terms of vocab and kanji. It was like that for me and also another friend of mine who is reading along (I don’t know may be other readers just breezed through it with no worries?). It was also the first chap where I really had to pull the vocab list else I was unable to make the ends of narration meet. The story was as interesting as ever though.
I mean, keep going, the other chapters are more gentle, really :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Such a long title I hadn’t even noticed it was still there  thanks @Ditto20! :purple_heart:

DDD:

Why did I have to suggest jumping ahead for the hardest chapter???

Edit: wait, vocab list? Are you referring to chapter 4?

Nope, I refer to the vocab list of Ch5. I know the shared list is not there yet, so I did the one for myself. Once the whole group starts with Ch5 i will just load mine into the shared doc.
What i meant is that for the prev chapters the vocab list was like an extra step to take. I get the overall story, but to make it nice and totally understandable I polish the vocab too.
With Ch5 the vocab list became a means of survival :joy::joy::joy:

Ooooh, I see.

Well, I look forward to this weekend, I guess

@Kawazoe if you want to upload your work on the vocab sheet ahead of time, I added a tab for week 10 (first half of chapter 5):

Exactly, why??? :joy:

I will still try :muscle:t3: looking forward to the vocab list, @Kawazoe, thanks in advance!

Okay, the vocab I collected is here, hope it would help others a bit.
The list has a break in its very beginning - it is the place where I still had some hopes to walk through with accidental check of the dictionary. After the break is where I just gave up and translated all the key words.

There are also a few words I did not find, potentially because I did not recognize their dictionary form correctly. So any additions and corrections are very welcome!

That’s the spirit  also sorry

Thank you! It’ll certainly help me  doesn’t matter if there are gaps; every word in the sheet is another one I don’t have to look up myself.

I have just finished the Zenitondou book and it is basically the first complete novel reading I’ve ever done. Within 5 years of studying Japanese…yeah, better late than never I guess?

The best word to describe my feelings right now is to say that I am hungry. For reading, that is. I will try tomorrow to start with コンビニ人間 from Intermediate Club to see if I can handle it at this level and will also join for the One Week Friends once it starts on 10th August. If the latter does not work, then 君に名は is yet waiting for me.

Not mentioning the コーヒーが冷めないうちに. For this one, if it has not been read within the clubs I will try to make a proposal…my feeling is that it is worth it.

If not for the reading club, I would perhaps have waited for another 5 years “to be good in Japanese enough to read unadapted something”

Ah… I have to admit that I gave up (for now). Will takle zenitendou (starting from chapter 1) again after I finish naze doushite (which should be next weekend) and go with a slower pace, I think max. 1 page a day.

No point beating your head against a brick wall and losing motivation :slightly_smiling_face: I still have a backlog of questions from earlier chapters (haven’t finished chapter 3 yet either), so if you want to post more questions when you start from the beginning you won’t be the only one

Chapter 6 is here!

Last chance to read a chapter along with the group

But what about Chapter 7?

Hmmmmmm, fair :stuck_out_tongue: there is an epilogue…

The last ‘proper’ week of reading is here! :tada:

We’re finishing up Chapter 6 this week, but there will be another thread next week in the break before 一週間フレンズ for people to ask questions about the epilogue and discuss the book as a whole.

Sorry this thread is going up a few hours late

I can’t remember if I shared this earlier, but it’s Tokyo’s oldest 駄菓子屋, which I walked past a number of times when I was there last year (but wasn’t quite brave enough to buy anything from!)

From the web: Founded in 1781, Kamikawaguchiya is undisputedly the most ancient dagashiya in the Greater Tokyo area. The shop is now passed down to the 13th generation. It is located in the temple of Zoshigaya Kishimojin in Ikebukuro.

Intriguing. I’ll be in Ikebukuro during my next trip in October, but tragically not with sufficient time to visit this place. Gonna have to add it to my list…
