Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Posting Advice

Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Naka’s first novel Gin no saji (“The Silver Spoon”), a nostalgic depiction of his childhood and teens. The novel was published from 1911 to 1913 and translated in 1976 by Etsuko Terasaki. It is popular in Japan and is an account of life in Tokyo at the beginning of the 20th century during the Meiji era, replete with historical details as well as a contemporary sense of isolation; it follows Naka’s psychological journey from childhood to adulthood
Oooo, they finally started using the 鶏 kanji for ニワトリ xdd
I wonder if this is to distinguish people who say the word, but I’m just assuming they are going to use it moving forwards xddd

Loved the censorship on a different letter of ウンコ in two different places so that you could piece out what the word was supposed to be xdddd

Definitely don’t understand 八軒’s confusion about the eggs while eating though, think it might be related to the sterility culture of Japan, but it’s sweet xddd
Loved the sounds around the picture when the guys managed to prevent wind from blowing everything to smithereens, was trying to read all the sounds as it went xddd
Also, right now on WaniKani I struggle with the kanji for 添, having 食品添加物 as a word is helping me internalize another uses for the kanji as well xddd
If anyone has the English panel scanlation for the また呪文。。。！！ panel, would be curious to see it xdddd

He’s a city boy. He’s never had to see the connection between animals and food in such up-close and gory detail before. It was always a fairly academic concept for him until this moment.
(But, ya know, it’s not like humans give birth out of their 肛門, so it’s not entirely surprising that he wouldn’t expect chickens to either.)
Caught up! This is somehow rated as harder than Nana but the vocab seems to be more straightforward and less slangy.
I guess the context is a bit familiar as my granpa had horses, my friend’s family had cows and our neighbour had few chiken coops. Weirdly I still see myself as more of city dweller. I guess I didn’t really fit it
The main character really reminds me of a friend who is shocked at least in weekly basis of world’s small wonders. Latest was when they figured out that all cows are female.
I think Nana is mainly tricky because of all the slang and casual speech, whereas this manga’s main difficulty for me so far is mainly the specialized vocab. Apparently the Natively raters seem to dislike doing vocab lookups a lot and ended up rating Nana lower.
But personally I’m like you, I find that dealing with ultra-casual grammar and slang is generally much trickier than just looking up vocab, so I actually find Nana significantly more challenging.
There’s also the possibility that this manga is going to become significantly harder later or I suppose.
Yeah, the manga is being quite tough on her, as if the way other characters treat her because of her appearance is not enough, seems like on top of that unfortunate things are happening to her:
Yeah, I hate it, but it seems to be the standard these days. Notice over on the far right, the first “bera” has a “(yak)” written underneath it - that’s how they do it, they just transliterate the sound effects while translating the very first one in a panel as a parenthetical note. And it’s like, how on earth does it increase my understanding of this scene to know exactly how sound effects are rendered in Japanese?
Still, it’s somewhat better than the system they used for the re-done version of Nausicaä, which was to leave the sound effects completely untranslated, but just have them all in a panel-by-panel glossary right at the back of the book.
It’s page 234… panel 5… aha, found it, it says “goon goon”, and apparently sounds like “gwoom gwoom”. Well, that’s interesting, an intellectual sense. But it’s been about thirty seconds since I read the actual panel by this point, assuming I even bothered to flip to the back, and any connection to the actual scene is lost. Any continuity in the scene is lost too, as I flip forward again and try to pick up from where I was before.
By comparison, here’s the same panel in the original English edition, released back in early days of the translated manga market, when it was standard practice to redraw panels to replace sound effects with English ones. (It was also standard practice to flop the images too, which is why it’s mirrored.)
And wailing about the sanctity of the original artwork aside, in this edition I have an immediate and innate understanding of the intended atmosphere here - the engines of Dorok monitors make a “dn dn dn” sound effect. In future scenes, I can tell when Doroks are about to arrive, because an ominous “dn dn” starts emitting from off-panel. I can picture this sound.
I think when the industry decided that “preserving the original artwork” was more important than accurate translation, they missed the whole point of sound effects. And it only got worse when they subsequently decided that the exact spelling of the original sound effect was more important than the sound of the sound effect. But Nausicaä’s sound effect glossary is by far the worst system that I’ve seen.
How bizarre. I’ll have to check how it’s done in French mangas next time I’m in a library. As far as I know the sound effects are redrawn but maybe it changed since the last time I bought a manga in French some 20 years ago…
