I’m find myself having trouble with 近づく, often putting in phrases such as “to get near”, “to come close”, and “to come near”. These seem very similar to the correct answers “to get close and to near”, however, these aren’t listed. Is this due to not wanting to add every possible variant of “get”, “close”, and “near”, or is there an English/Japanese reason those aren’t correct?

Nope. All your alternative answers sound perfectly fine, and they’re all in the Oxford Dictionary as well.近づく may be translated differently depending on context since it really just means ‘to become nearer (to)’, which doesn’t sound very natural, but I’m aiming for a very neutral, general translation. However, all the answers you proposed mean essentially the same thing, with possibly one difference in nuance: ‘get’ might imply a bit more effort and intention (e.g. ‘I can’t get near the tower’), whereas ‘come’ implies approaching something and focuses on plain movement.

I did what you did over and over for months, but in the end I added all missing combinations of “to [get / come]x[close / near]” as synonyms.
