行い Verb Conjugation Mystery

I can’t believe I’ve been reading Sailor V vol1 for like the past 3 months. OTL

今度は、この私のクローンコピーをアイドルとして世に送り込み、洗脳を行い

I get the gist of the sentence but the conjugation of the last verb 行う is throwing me off. I would expect 行います here but the ます bit never shows up. Why is this happening?? :face_holding_back_tears:

It doesn’t continue in another panel? The period in your transcription of it doesn’t exist in the pic. (I realize manga basically never uses periods)

If not, I guess it’s just trailing off. People leave sentences unfinished in real life. Usually when speaking you’d use て form for these continuation parts, but when speaking more formally the stem can be used. Not that 送り込み is also just the stem for continuation.

My bad it continues onto the next page, here’s the full sentence:

今度はこの私のクローン・コピーをアイドルとして世に送り込み 洗脳を行い エナジーを大量に吸い取り 人間を滅亡させてみせますわ!

I guess I haven’t seen this grammatical pattern before where you just use the masu stem for continuous action? :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Ah, yeah, seems like it works as continuation.

It’s basically like て form for continuation, except that て form has more possible meanings. The stem can really only mean “action A then action B”, where as て form can also have causal relationships or other nuances.

And as mentioned before, this is a formal way of speaking, so usually you wouldn’t hear it in everyday conversations.
