Aah, I was wondering about a bird apparently, cause according to Manga Kotoba the most frequent word in this volume for me:

Anyway, what does シュティレ mean in German? :eyes:

シュティレ【隕鉄鳥】
Stille(静寂)。英語のstill(静止した)と同語源のstill(静かな・静止した)の名詞形。

There’s no way I would’ve guessed that.

I don’t get most of them. FYI There’s a link to the following resource in the home post to look these up!

Ahh, how I forgot about it…

German speaker here
“Stille” translated to English would be “silence”(noun), so I guess I’d go for 「静寂」.

Oof, had a lot of trouble with this chapter, but managed to get through it.

Couple of small things.

  1. Is this the first chapter that doesn’t start by referencing Himmel’s death?
  2. ラヴィーネ used the phrase 「意外と」a couple of times. From what I can gather this is just a colloquial synonym for 「意外に」?

From a quick google, seems that way - 意外に is a bit more ‘literary feeling’ is what several posters seem to say

Appears so, perhaps this means we’ll be seeing many chapters to come in this mage test sequence …

don’t worry it’s not like a lot of other filler story arcs… it’s at least interesting and there is a lot of stuff that will happen that is important … remember it’s still frieren

I’m just realizing how far behind the reading plan I am, I didn’t have notifications set on this thread and just carelessly cruised through my day being like “oh yeah I wonder when is Volume 5 going to start” xdd

This is my first volume when I’m joining in Japanese and I finished chapter 38 right now and the German names in katakana are killing me ^^

The grammar I’m doing on Bunpro was really useful for this chapter, like for example the expression 奪われないように守らなければならない would be really difficult to read if I haven’t done the grammars previously, but I have a Polish volume in addition to Japanese that I can use to compare the translations
In Polish, the line is “Musimy pilnować, żeby nikt nie ukradł klatki” - “We must watch out so that nobody steals the cage”, so there’s a slight level of localization differences between the two.

Also, on the context of names, “ラヴィーネ”, I know it’s German, so I’m trying to think like “Ravine”? “Labine?”

Turns out it’s “Lawine”, avalanche, ehhhhh xddd

It might take me a while to catch up to the current progress, but I’m intending to do so!

Well done on joining us in Japanese! I feel like volume 4 was quite a bit easier and the difficulty has ramped up a bit this volume so don’t be too disheartened if it’s tough going at times.

ch 40

Wow I thought they’d be hurt or disqualified at best, but this is very sad

I’m interested to see how Frieren’s party is going to fight off the other three. Also not sure why Stark was in the cover image, but it’s cute that he’s thinking about the girls :")
