This week we finish Ch 2 - join the discussion for Week 5 here!
I finally got some time to read Frieren. I read vol 7, the one that picks up right after the anime.
Maybe it was a boring volume but I enjoyed the anime adaptation far more than the manga. In particular the art is quite simple and skips any complex dynamic scenes. In the whole volume not a single fight/magic sequence, even though they were in the story. The manga just shows the opponent and then the resolution, leaving the rest to our imagination.
Vol 7 synopsis
Frieren’s party just keeps walking from town to town occasionally taking random jobs. Not much character development out story progression.
But oh well, I bought all the volumes during a bookwalker promotion so will finish it regardless.
Sounds like a bummer for the action crowd but great for the healing manga crowd. I’ve never done well going between film or anime and books myself actually.
Could you put the third paragraph under a spoiler tag? Or the whole comment under a “volume 7 review” dropdown? It’s minor but some people might appreciate that
Sure thing. I thought if it’s worth it to hide it under spoiler but decided against it, since I’m not revealing anything except I guess pacing and general story flow (which you could have guessed if you’re familiar with the series). But updated the post nevertheless.
I appreciate that you hid it, because I’m one of the (seemly few) new people to this series.
I have also not seen the anime, one of the reasons I joined this book club was because I’d heard the anime was so good yet had not got around to it.
Actually, I just rewatched the first two episodes of the anime and was blown away by how much they improved the pacing and emotional impact even in the quiet, meditative parts like the ones where they just show time passing with a sequence of small cut scenes. It really makes me look forward to first reading the later volumes with the club and then getting season 2 and revisiting it with the full audiovisual experience.
The manga is good, but the anime is god tier. (Though it can’t get around the source materials occasional failings)
Bocchi director two for two
I read vol 8. I must say it’s more interesting compared to vol 7
I will be flying later today. Let’s see what vol 9 brings
I’m jealous you can blow through them like that, but I’ll get there eventually
And when you do you’ll start questioning the value for money of each manga volume
Ah I already do in English… So in Japanese (on golden week) it’s a steal!!!
All these comments are making want to watch post book club! Definitely waiting now, though, as it sounds like otherwise I might struggle to motivate the reading
This!
Worried about that! Will have to take advantage of Bookwalker deals then
You mean the sudden classic shonen staple tournament arc?
Week 6 is up! We read the first half of Ch 3. This is the last chapter we split in half.
We’re half way through the club, so it’s
poll time!
Well, I just made that up, but it would be great for the BBC club to get some feedback about pace. Please participate whether or not you are still reading along with the club and whether or not you feel like you are the target audience for the club.
I posted the polls on the BBC thread because I would like people to vote even if they stopped participating in the club, and perhaps those people are more likely to see the polls there.

Thanks everyone!
And thanks everyone who has participated in the club so far, it’s a real treat to read with you all!
Week 7 is up! Let’s finish Ch 3 🪻
Welcome to week 8! Join in for Chapter 4!
Hi! I’m Juli. Omg, I can’t believe I found a bookclub of frieren and its beginner level!! joining right now. Question, are you planning to read the next volumes as well? to see if i use the promotion for bundles on manga
Welcome to the club Juli! Usually an offshoot club for each series we read will start after we finish Volume 1 (I actually can’t think of a case where an offshoot club didn’t start except for when it’s a standalone book). So I assume that’s the case here too. Especially since this is such a popular series rn!
