Might I ask where one can acquire these stickers?

They’re with special editions of the manga. It’s not super common to have extra goodies like that but all the big names in manga seem to have at least a volume or two with goodies.

What are the thoughts on using the vocab spreadsheet? It’s amazing having a prepopulated spreadsheet.

Currently it’s sorted by vocab frequency, so all the 3* words, then the 2* words, the 1* words and the 0* words. That doesn’t make it very practical for using while reading as the words for page 3 are spread over 4 sections.

It’s been set up nicely so it can be easily sorted by page number by clicking on the box at the top of that column, although the words on each page are still out of order (there are about 23 vocab words for page 3).

I don’t know if people will be planning to reorder the words according to order in the page - if someone does that and someone else sorts the data again by word frequency all that work will be lost!

Google really needs to copy Microsoft’s feature to sort/filter only for the individual so it doesn’t sort for everyone.

Edit: It looks like they do have the feature, but it was not as (for me) easy to discover. Updating the spreadsheet now.

Edit 2: Actually, the main issue is that normally I remove the filter and I forgot to this time. But I think it’d be good to try having per-user filtering in case anyone wants to filter to just the pages they are reading. If people don’t like it, we can always remove the filters.

Un-hide column E, sort on that, re-hide column E  (This fails only when someone has manually added an entry.)

this drove me a little nutz when i read the first bit a week ago and admittedly i added one thing

tell us how to “discover” and also how to if we add what we should do to not totally screw up your sort

Only one user needs to do this for the feature to apply for everone:

And now filtering and sorting is per-user:

Edit: Actually, I don’t know if each user would have to create their own filter. So for now I’m leaving them off, but people can maybe add their own if they want to sort/filter?

Thanks that all makes a lot of sense. Sorting by the hidden column E looks like it puts everything in the right order.

Can I suggest we then leave it sorted by column E, leave the filters removed, and leave column E hidden (as it is now for week 1). It then just works like a traditional vocab spreadsheet. If someone wants to re-sort for their own use they can always export a copy to do this with.

I’ve taken the two words from the bottom that @shuly had added for page 3 and copied them into the correct place as they appear in the book.

I think maybe you could pivot table it as well. For general use though it should be sorted by page no

Good catch on this before there are 90 people playing with the spreadsheet :eyes: Thanks for sorting this @Micki and @ChristopherFritz

I didn’t even know that was a thing!

That sounds very sensible, I agree!

That’s nice, thanks!

I definitely want to join in with this one!! I haven’t read anything for a while so a manga seems like a nice way to ease back into it :sparkles:

Out of curiosity, do you guys usually read a little a day or do you read a weekly section all at once?

Glad to see you here!

I guess it depends on how you enjoy your reading, so take this with a grain of salt -

for me, if something is easier, I’ll do the whole week’s read at once and that makes it easier to interact in the book clubs and help people if needed. But especially in the beginning when things were tougher and each page took a lot of effort, I found it more motivating just to do a little bit every day and check the forums to see what people were saying about that page as I went. Or ask a question if needed.

I’ll be interested what other people say!

When I started with the ABBC my first manga, I wasn’t able to finish in one sitting, so usually spread on several days. Now that I’ve been reading for a longer time, all at once. I have both more stamina and a better comprehension now.

I usually try to the week’s portion in one sitting. I like to hit intentional stopping points. It does bother me sometimes if we don’t end on a chapter or clear scene change, but it bothers me more to hold onto any questions I have for later.

For me, I find that doing a reading across days makes it harder because I have to remember what happened before and find my exact spot, etc. etc. which makes me take more time to get to actual reading.

don’t recall adding 2 but as long as they ended up in the correct place

depends on the book/difficulty and timing for me. I have watched all the anime so remebering what happened or going slow isn’t a huge issue. Sometimes though like dio mentioned, it’s better to try to read the whole thing in one sitting. Also reading too far ahead and/or having to hold questions can be frustrating. Reading too far behind isn’t usually too bad as sometimes your questions are already answered in the thread (if no one else asked). If not easy enough to just post the question. But falling too far behind unless it’s something I really am super motivated to read, is demotivating and will often not want to continue the club. Although that’s usually just because the book isn’t quite holding my interest or the level was too difficult to bother with.

I usually read the weekly section all at once if it’s doable. And then at some point I get into the flow and just finish the volume all at once

Depends on the difficulty though. If I struggle a bit with what I’m reading I’m likely to take a few days.

Got my first volume from the local bookshop and I’ve watched a majority of the show so I am ready to jump in and knock out my first Japanese manga series. I’ve been making steady progress through Satori Reader and WaniKani so I think this will be a good change of pace.

I was wondering if anyone else here uses a different method for vocabulary study. I’ve fallen out of love with Anki and I’ve been trying to keep things going with JPDB. Might be a bit of a pain to send all of these new vocab words to my decks though haha

i like anki, but i limit my srs to 30 min a day (+ revisions of failed cards, but I spread those out).

my number one tip is you don’t need to know every word. These days I only bother adding words that I see multiple times or that jump out at me as being important (usually because I see them multiple times)

if you like the wk gamification then check out kitsun
works well (not free like anki) but its really good (lifetime sales from time to time)
Also there’s renshuu which has a free option
just have to find one that works for you
also technically not free but could write your own flash cards on like cardstock and flip them over!!!
manual srs even

I’ve just finished reading the first week’s pages :tada: :tada: (in Australia it’s the 19th already)

I found that having SRS’d all the words from the vocab list that appear 4+ times in the volume and having the list available for (Very very frequent) comparison, I was able to follow through well enough.
I imagine having watched the anime already also contributed a lot to understanding.

I had to skip over the text sitting outside of specific textboxes (Pages 3 and 10) as the writing was a bit too hard for me to read.

The number one highlight for me was reading:

Page 9

僕達の冒険は これで終わリだ (This is the end of our adventure)

as I was able to read the whole sentence without looking anything up, thanks to the practice I’d done and recognizing the last word from earlier in the chapter.

While I’m not at the level to immediately understand all the grammar points, I enjoyed myself and look forward to reading with everyone over the coming weeks.

Over the next week I think I’ll go back over the pages to ask questions about some of the grammar or parts I found hard to comprehend. (probably after my physical copies arrive on Monday)

For everyone else trying to read manga for the first time, you’ve got this! It’ll be a struggle but if you stick with it I bet you’ll find it satisfying too!
