葬送のフリーレン ・Frieren 🧝‍♂️ (Beginner Book Club) [Reading Vol 6]

Have you considered the elf emoji? :woman_elf:

This one is really tempting :eyes: . I might join if my local store restocks the first volume before it starts, they can be fairly slow with restocks sometimes but there’s still a month left so, maybe!

Is it spoilerish, given the title? :joy:

The fan translated title before there was an official translated name was Frieren of the Funeral too.

I was gonna say that. Viz’s official English translation just calls it Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, so the actual meaning of the Japanese title was completely lost on me until I started watching the anime.

Also, I’d like to put forward once again the controversial option of having no emoji at all.

Awww, but it just wouldn’t be the same without an emoji :flushed:.

Hmm, now that you mention it

That’s kinda the point. :stuck_out_tongue:

If you like, you can imagine it as an emoji of the transparent png background.

Ah you’re convincing me

Anyway, I’ll make a poll!

Regarding the schedule, so far no comments, so does that mean, is it just right, no poll needed? The number of pages with text per chapter kind of made this one easy as it aligned so well with typical club speed and ramp up.

Glad to see a book club starting on this! I am pretty advanced in Frieren but will be following this book club attentively

emoji poll!

Let’s have some fun and choose the emoji for the club. See the posts above for explanations. I grouped similar ones to avoid splitting the vote on those. If that choice wins the nominator can choose / ask for preferences

Yes, the third one is… nothing/ no emoji! Unfortunately the poll didn’t allow a blank.

What emoji shall we use for Frieren?
  • :ice_cube: or :snowflake: or
  • :mantelpiece_clock:
  • [nothing]
  • :boom: or :sparkles:
  • :woman_elf:
  • :headstone:

After the latest anime episode I’m increasingly convinced a flower emoji is the right answer, even if not a blue one

I am delighted that these weren’t secretly rickrolls

Arg I missed that one, didn’t think of putting in a non blue one. I’ll slip that in one week

How did you do that?! I experimented a bit but apparently not enough…

nbsp = non-breaking space (meaning when used between two words, they won’t split across two lines if the text is too long for a line; it’s sort of a hack to use it to trick the poll)

Nice hack!

For those who’ve participated in the Beginner Book Club before, how prepared should you be for Frieren? Here are some volume 1 vocabulary and kanji comparisons:

Title Total Words Unique Words Total Kanji Unique Kanji
Frieren 2,407 1,078 2,700 642
Art Club 2,072 1,035 1,817 504
Maiko House 1,210 627 912 287
Shadows House 1,190 550 1,046 295
Househusband 922 598 862 381
Nichijou 1,630 844 1,338 402
Flying Witch 1,701 858 1,574 464

* Thus includes non-content pages, such as copyright pages.
** 4koma have specifically been excluded from this list.

If you’ve been reading in the Absolute Beginner Book Club and are planning to try the Beginner Book Club for the first time, now’s a good time to start learning the highest-frequency words from the volume that you don’t already know.

My own goal as a long-time manga reader is to pre-learn almost all words that appear four or more times in the volume.
