That emoji vote
Can I vote for the crazy, outlandish idea of “maybe we don’t actually need to use an emoji”?
It makes threads easier to recognize, many people seem to like the extra visual flair, and surely it doesn’t hurt?
I will count that as 1 vote for no emojis then
I’m a bit surprised by the schedule poll state. Schedules A and B start off with 21 pages (!!) in the very first week and people seem to like those options at 37%, and yet C (which has “~21 pages per week” during all weeks) is only at 18%? If you can somehow read 21 pages in the first week when everything is new to you, you could probably easily continue doing it in the following weeks.
I wonder if people just read “Read a chapter a week” and thought “yeah, that seems like a good concept” without checking how many pages this actually is? I think next time breakdowns like F and G have would be good for all schedules.
I shamelessly voted for A, because I won’t be able to do any reading for 4 weeks from mid-October to mid-November because of a trip. So it seemed more convenient to me to front-load and read more pages per week in September, when I’m still at home rather than November, when I’ll be struggling to catch up with 4 book clubs at once plus the Quartet thread. I wouldn’t be at all disappointed if any other schedule wins, though. I’m sure I’ll manage to catch up at some point in time some way or another. If a 6 week schedule wins, I might consider skipping this for now and doing a complete retro-read at a later point in time when it’s more convenient.
As you guys might have seen, schedule E won the poll, and I have added it to the first post as our determined schedule. I’ll see you guys at the end of the month for the 1st half of chapter 1!
Not sure if this is the right place to post, but…
Has anyone bought the kindle version? Clicking on the kindle link takes me to the right page at Japanese Amazon, but says that the item is not available for purchase.
My first time purchasing from Amazon japan. Perhaps I am doing something wrong.
Are you logged in with a non-Japanese Amazon account?
If so, you must create a separate login specifically for Amazon of Japan.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the first 7 volumes of this series are free on Bookwalker until Thursday. Just in case anyone is not sure yet and wants to try it in advance.
Thanks. I signed up for bookwalker instead, and now have a digital copy. I won’t feel bad about the trees now.
I have a copy of the first volume. The level 27 scares me. The last time I tried this it was for an Ouran Host Club one and I dropped it before even making it through the first week. I hope more gets added to the vocab sheet than what seems usual for the BBC.
I’ve struggled through a level 28, so I know I can do this given enough time… hopefully the pace isn’t too punishing.
Exactly the same here! I checked the date that it happened since I was thinking the same thing and it was in May, so also hoping a bit that in those five months, where I’ve been reading everyday, I’ve made a bit of progress.
In the meantime, it’s never too soon to look over a frequency list for the volume and aim to pre-learn as many high-frequency words as you can.
As someone who has read a few volumes of both this and Ouran, I personally feel that Ouran is much more difficult. Sure, there are some difficult words (mostly due to dialect) and some text heavy pages, but I wouldn’t consider the Natively rating as absolute
That’s good to know!
Thank you for the link! So far that vocab looks doable.
I read the entire first volume in 2 hours on Monday, when I became aware that it was free on Bookwalker, and it was the easiest thing I’ve ever read. I expected to have problems with the dialect, and indeed 90% of the time I had no idea what those fancy new verb endings were trying to tell me, but somehow it was still very easy to guess the gist of everything that was going on from context.
Not really a spoiler, but
I think the reason was partially the detailled drawing style, which gives you a lot of clues what’s going on, especially with the cooking related stuff, plus for better or worse the plot is pretty cliched, so most of the time, the characters say exactly what you expect them to say if you’ve ever read any other manga from this genre. I also read volume 2 in the last 3 days before the free version vanished, and it was somewhat harder, so I think the L27 rating comes from people who have read the entire series and found the later volumes harder.
Right, so I just saw that too and I added it to the cart and “purchased” it. Does that mean I now own it, or is this only for a limited time?
