自己紹介できない人です！

Hey all, I need some help with 自己紹介.
Tomorrow is my daughter’s 入学式, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be meeting a large quantity of Japanese people as a result. I never did a Japanese textbook etc., so maybe I just missed this all-important unit, but I really always feel uncomfortable with 自己紹介.

Looking for tips online brings up a lot of super beginner articles (that look like unnatural Japanese, but maybe I’m wrong) teaching me to say things like 私はnameです。(Though most of these are written in romaji).
Are there any sources you could recommend to get a bit more comfortable with meeting people/common conversations when meeting someone? I’d really love a YouTube video or something where I could just study how native Japanese people naturally meet and introduce themselves. Any key phrases/helpful hints you guys have learned via dealing with Japanese people and meeting them over time? Thanks!

I am definitely not an expert, but I have typically used:

(name) と申します

to introduce myself politely.

Since I have a foreign name, any tips on saying it? Should I just use my family name?

A common question I also find myself wanting to ask when meeting people is what part of Japan they are from does 何県の出身ですか？ Work? Can I just use どこの出身?

It’s not that difficult if you already can speak japanese a bit.

In business setting you’d do a business card exchange but you wouldn’t do it when meeting other parents.

A typical pattern would be to say that you’re this child’s parent and say your name.

〇〇の親の〇〇と言います。よろしくお願いします。

After that it depends on the situation. If you’re foreigner you’ll probably be asked how long you’re in Japan, where you’re from etc.

Here’s a video I watched previously on 自己紹介 for joining a company. The little bit around 2:00 gives a good tip on pronuncing your name in a katakana way so that it’s easier to understand for Japanese listeners.

I agree with d-hermit’s suggestion of introducing yourself in terms of being your child’s parent.

You can keep it simple when asking for 出身. You can ask politely with a little keigo: ご出身はどちらですか？
