Just received my physical copy! So excited and thank you @araigoshi @ChristopherFritz and @KanjiDenji7 for helping with all the logistics
.
Ordered a physical copy and look forward to read my first manga in this club! I wondered how people here utilise the vocab list: do you make an anki deck or do you just simply use it as a more straightforward dictionary? Just curious how I can prepare and make the best out of this!
I find a lot of words are memorable after reading without srs, so I don’t personally use them for deck building. For paper reads I generally read a chunk without any support first. Dig deep, remember stuff, guess words, get an overview of what I think is going on. I’ll do this as long as it’s fun and I’m not so in the dark or is boring. So depending on difficulty it might be 1-3 pages up to the whole week’s reading. Then if needed I’ll go back for a closer read and just leave the spreadsheet open next to me. Normally on the second pass I understand way more, and don’t need as many lookups than if I had done them on the first pass. This is great for paper reading and if I need quite a few, is usually much faster than doing all the lookups myself. Although if I need very few lookups, I won’t use the spreadsheet, then it’s less cumbersome to just do them myself than seek out the few I need.
I bought kindle version.
Hopefully I will be able to follow club reading
I like to make SRS cards for the highest frequency words I don’t know yet in advance of reading.
In the context of this book club, that would be looking at the next week’s vocabulary for anything with ✭✭✭ beside it.
This primes me to more readily recognize the word when I encounter it when reading, and for me this helps me remember it better.
Just ordered the book! This is my first book club. Looking forward to joining!
I’m going to be reading this book with my daughter, so a list is fine. We have Anki but I’ve never made my own deck and I don’t know that that would be helpful for us. We’ll use whatever you provide, however you provide it. Thank you so much for doing this work!
This will be my first time reading along with you.
I made myself a pdf from the trial pages on booklooker. I consider buying from booklooker, too, but is it true, that they don’t give you a pdf? I love to mark and write in my manga and make annotations and stuff. Any other sources for pdfs?
Bookwalker? I don’t think any major brand will give you a pdf. You’ll have to figure out how to get a file, strip the DRM, extract the images and make a pdf of those. All the stores are getting locked down to some degree or the other, so it’ll be a challenge no matter which one you pick…
Sad but understandable, pdfs are way too easy to share. As long as I can still screenshot I can make my own at least. Doesnt take too long in comparison of me actually reading and understanding the chapter.
maybe there is a reader app for ipad where i can make handwritten annotations?

Thanks for the recommendation
I just bought the manga, made a screenshot of every page and made a pdf out of it. This way I can use it in my favourite reader where I got all my stickers and fav brushes etc. As long as I still read slow it’s in my budget and not to time consuming making the pdfs myself.
I just wish there was a nice subscription model for later, when i want to go on binge reads. But i think this goes way to off topic ^^
Commenting to say I plan on reading this! I’m using a Mokuro’d version so I can look up the text <3
Got my copy! They also sent me a Kit-Kat and an おみくじ :)
I just got my physical copy and this will be my first time joining a book club. My primary reason for joining the club is to motivate myself to get started on reading. It’s too easy to always just put it off until “tomorrow” and then never starting. This way I’ll have a reasonable amount to do each week.
I have been learning Japanese on and off (mostly off in long periods) for almost 20 years. It’s time to get something to show for it by being able to read some real Japanese.
Looking forward to reading along with you all!
Just got my copy today!
Cheers to everyone joining, especially those participating for the first time. We’re so glad to have you!
Just ordered my copy! Excited to read along with you all
