Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. How did you like seeing some familiar faces again?

  5. What is the most interesting thing you found in the capital?

  6. Do you have any theories on how they’ll get into castle?

Probably a slightly harder Japanese level week than average, at least early on.Then again, I’m also just so exhausted today. I can’t handle this daylight savings time nonsense anymore; it makes me feel awful for days if not weeks.

Thoughts

Olivier exists! And either I forgot over time or he’s even sillier than ever when dealing with someone he seems to know better. クローゼ is in trouble, and I should have thought about that considering the threat to the royal family. She’s being held in that offlimits shrine, maybe? I have to imagine we’re breaking in there later. We’re breaking into places a lot, recently. The archeology professor is always one of the less notable characters to me, but I did like the little scene where he tries to persuade them to wander closer to the military’s investigation headquarters entirely out of curious defiance.

For whatever reason when it comes to side story RPG timekilling events I’ve always really loved coliseum tournament type stuff. This is my onsen. I got so excited at the mention then so dejected when it was explained that we can’t be a part of it. I really hope that by some contrivance we join. I mean it has to be relevant for SOME reason… so actually my theory is that by some means we use the tournament to get in. Maybe it’s located in a place with a sneaky route to the castle? If not for the military watching bracers closely I think it would be very standard RPG plot for the prize to involve meeting the queen so we have to enter and win, but given the circumstances I doubt that one. Maybe just timing it while it’s happening draws away military members who are participating and otherwise creates a big distraction?

I mostly put off exploring the new town until next week like I tend to do; I’m too tired for it right now, but it’s nice to be somewhere new again. Now that I know you all don’t get the big CGs I do, here are the two from this week:

Once more the game wants you to do a weird detour to get a missable item at a point where the story gives you a sense of urgency to go in the exact opposite direction. What even is the point of designing it this way? It forces you to play the game with a guide and takes you out of the story. Idiotic.

It’s even dumber here because 2 minutes earlier the game won’t let you go there because you don’t want to miss the plane, but apparently being actively chased by the army is no big deal and you can just walk half a day to grab a book in some random place before you take care of the huge time-sensitive conspiracy unfolding in the capital.

“Wow, we almost got caught by those soldiers at the gate in a super predictable turn of events we didn’t even consider. No attempt to hide our bracer insignas or prepare a pretext for our journey. Fortunately this character deus-ex-machinaed and saved us. At any moment the military could receive a message from headquarters identifying us and leading to our arrest. Let’s… have lunch and a lengthy chat in the military outpost?”

What are we doing, game?

The scriptwriter forgor :skull_and_crossbones: . Far from private room and overhearing, that’s a public space.

But meeting Albus is a stroke of luck. Probably confirmed not to be an outright enemy spy. (Always suspicious before, though.)

They could have got caught near 離宮 if they still forgot. Anyway, this place’s gate is closed.

Week 36

There was so much that annoyed me this week, this whole fugitive-but-not-quite-but-still-kind-of situation is very clumsily handled by the writers in my opinion. And on top of that I got hit with the “Joshua we need to talk” bullshit from Estelle. REEEEEE. Her being so casual about everything given the current stakes feels really silly. She can be a bit impulsive and immature at times but she’s not an idiot, she should be focused on the task at hand. Her almost blurting out that she was working for the 博士 to the guard was uncharacteristically stupid. As is her not understanding why Joshua wasn’t telling the whole truth to the scientist.

Happy to visit a new city though, but a bit disappointed that the town music is not new. Tons of very expensive good gear in the shop too, but I decided to wait a bit before I go on a shopping spree.

I went the long way around (it was fun finally revisiting the Rolent gate after all this time! Even though obviously you can’t cross) and there are a bunch of ominous colored monuments in the area, I wonder what they are for. Bunch of trapped chests with powerful quartz in them too.

Various characters have mentioned it this week, it has to be an important plot element so I’m thinking we’ll get to join somehow. My theory is that the winners of the tournament will have the opportunity to talk to the queen in person and Estelle and Joshua will use that as a way to bypass the scrutiny of the military.

It’s no onsen but I too will be disappointed if we don’t get to participate.

Yeah it’s a bit odd, I expected to either be told by Joshua that we couldn’t go there or to have guards turn us away, but instead the place looks deserted and the gate is closed. A bit eerie.
