Vocabulary

Vocab Sheet , thank you to everyone who has been helping with this.

We also have an arts sheet if you’re struggling with the in-game version.

Please read the guidelines on the first page before adding any words.

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. What do you make of the news of the queen being sick?

  5. Did you enjoy getting to see the actual matches in the arena?

  6. How confident are you with The Plan?

City tour

Nice to see Alba in the museum (archive), but a lot to read in the exhibit. Does anyone like to visit museum when traveling? (Apparently I do, but I assume there are a lot more who don’t. Only in English, though.)

It’s always weird that all less important people got their names known easily, but not the publishing comp prez.

Also this person

I can’t get into the embassy or harbor. Maybe I can later?

Apparently I might be able to buy a house there (if I have enough money).

And now, upcoming :beer_mug: :doughnut:

Well, this played out basically the way I/we predicted. I was calling it within the week too, as soon as I saw that じん was fighting alone. I’m excited! Who knows what sort of mess it will become when we get into the castle, but I’m going to guess we do manage to win the tournament. Had it just been Estelle/Joshua I thought the game might pull a forced loss, in keeping with how they are still bracers in training, but I think じん can carry us. I really like him, and Olivier being back too now, love this team.

It’s always fun to me when a game like this shows a story event through watching automated gameplay, so the spectating was fun too. Joshua has some very fancy analysis for the bracers win considering they simply did 5x the amount of damage  . I think our team in the arena should also try the strategy of doing high amounts of damage and taking small ones.

Huh, I need to check that out! Museums are alright; I think my wife enjoys them more than me though haha.

Oh no we forgot to bring them!

The economy of Liberl is messed up: a night at a fancy hotel in a very busy season is 100mira, but ice cream at a random stall is between 150 and 700mira!

By the way, what happens if you can’t/don’t want to pay the 1000mira to watch the qualifications?

Nothing. Either sell your gear or go fight monsters to get enough sepith to trade for the mira.

That’s good, I was worried that I had missed some side-content by just accepting the price immediately.

When I was playing Legend of Legaia last year, I cheated early in the game to give me effectively infinite money. I did that because I remembered that the game was very stingy with money otherwise, which made it a bit grindy since the dungeons are not super easy and you need to buy the gear and healing items to survive.

But then much later in the game I got to a point where, in order to progress, you had to procure a certain item. This item is available in a local shop, but it’s prohibitively expensive. But of course since I had cheated money, I didn’t have a good notion of how expensive it was at that point in the game so I insta-bought it. Only later did I realize that the game tried to nudge me towards a side-quest where I could have gotten the item basically for free.

Whew, finished this week’s part just in time. Unfortunately I couldn’t do much exploring but I want to check out the museum for story and world-building hints this upcoming week :eyes:

Week 37

Olivier is back! In the party, and not just making cryptic remarks about the overarching plot! The way he inserts himself into Estelle and Joshua’s business is still funny. I’m hoping we’ll have either him or Jin or both in our party from now on because those big sharks in the forest are no joke…

I went to the museum and there are a bunch of placards all over the place with various lore bits and I had the same reaction as for the computer in Zeiss, just TL;DR.

I’m not playing along, but I’m curious, how are you guys playing the game in Japanese? Using a mod?

You can install a mod, or for more legal sources you can get the Original version from DLsite or look for a physical PSP copy, or get the Evolution remake which is on Vita. There’s another remake coming out late this year for the Switch.

Oh nice, good to know! I’d love to replay it someday in Japanese.
