I put up the following schedule for volume 2 based on sticking at 20 pages per week.

Schedule
Week Start date Chapter Page numbers Pages
1 Apr 13 Start chapter 4 7-26 20
2 Apr 20 Continue chapter 4 27-46 20
3 Apr 27 Finish chapter 4 47-62 16
4 May 4 Start chapter 5 65-84 20
5 May 11 Finish chapter 5 85-104 20
6 May 18 Start chapter 6 107-126 20
7 May 25 Finish chapter 6 + Album booklet 127-end ?

But having read this week where we only had 17 pages it felt quite short. I wonder if we would be better dividing chapter 4 into two weeks of 28 pages each, rather than 3 weeks?

  • Sounds good - let’s read chapter 4 in two weeks, I want to get on with the story
  • No, leave it as 3 weeks for chapter 4, I prefer a slower pace
  • Either is fine with me - I’m either super chill or I’m dreadfully non commital…

Ok enough votes to leave it as it is. I’ll leave the schedule unchanged. Thanks everyone.

Ok volume 2 starts today. I’ve put up the participation poll for week 1.

Well discuss volume 2 within a single thread, so I won’t put reminders here each week.

Since we are often basing the pacing of new clubs on the pacing of older clubs, I thought it might be useful to get some data on how the participants actually felt on the reading speed chosen.

  • Reading this manga took moderate effort for me. I wish the club’s pacing had been slower.
  • Reading this manga took moderate effort for me. The club’s pacing was perfect for me.
  • Reading this manga took moderate effort for me. I would’ve been fine if this club had been faster.
  • Reading this manga took significant effort for me. I wish the club’s pacing had been slower.
  • Reading this manga took significant effort for me. The club’s pacing was perfect for me.
  • Reading this manga took significant effort for me. I would’ve been fine if this club had been faster.
  • I’m an experienced reader who could’ve read this faster but I still need to click a poll option.
  • It’s been too long and I don’t remember.

The poll has these options because I think the target audience we should orient BBC reading speeds around are the ones who actually need the book club to read it, i.e. the ones who have to put in at least moderate effort to read the manga.

Let’s see if we get any useful data out of this. If so, maybe I’ll post it in some older threads and see if anybody still remembers enough

  • I’m not a particularly experienced reader but I have no self-control and binged the entire volume in one go

Though I will admit I didn’t find it a particularly difficult read, and that’s a big part of why I finished the whole volume at once

Volume 2 is coming out in English in February as well, albeit on the 18th. (Volume 1 was released back in October - was gonna go grab it at my local Kinokuniya today, but tragically it’s sold out.)

Edit:

Nope, website was wrong - there were plenty of volumes 1. I even got a big shiny postcard with it too.

Plus, they had a big display in the Japanese section with both volumes 1 and 2 in the original Klingon Japanese. Not sure why the fuss, though there were notes on the obi saying that it took second place in, uh… something, which it just occured to me now I didn’t actually read.

Meanwhile Yuru Camp volume 15, which is what I primarily went there to get, was still in boxes out the back and not on the shelf yet. I jumped the gun. Gonna have to go back next week…
