Previously, I learned “名字” as a family name, but today I encountered “氏”, which has the same meaning.
Is there a difference, and when should I use each?
Thanks!

If you haven’t yet, you will learn 氏 as a suffix that follows a persons’ surname. 名字 is a noun and a の adjective, you can see the difference between the way they’re used in their respective context sentences.
