Progress Post #1

WANIKANI

Current Level: 9

In One Month I Hope to be Level: 12

GOALS

Last month’s goal report: n/a

This month’s goal: Write 6 pages in 日記

RESOURCES

  • Genki 1
  • WaniKani
  • Tae Kim’s Reference Grammar
  • Anki Decks
  • Looking to try Japanese Graded Readers maybe? Others seem to have had luck with them.

JAPANESE ABILITY
Current Japanese Weakness: Everything… but writing slightly less. I have a lot to work on.
How I will Improve: Keep working at it. I’ve been too busy to talk to anyone as of late so my writing is the only thing getting any practice. Find a good practice partner to work on conversation.

TIP/ADVICE FOR LEARNING JAPANESE:
Don’t try to learn too much in one day. You won’t remember it tomorrow.

PROGRESS POST #5: August 2017

:crabigator: WANIKANI

CURRENT WANIKANI LEVEL: 32

IN ONE MONTH I HOPE TO BE LEVEL… 34

:crabigator: GOALS

LAST MONTH’S GOAL REPORT:

○ Level: Check
○ Anki vocab: I learned as much as I had planned.
○ New listening resource: I found something, but I’m not very happy with it.
× Reading: I forgot that a lot
○ Finish handwriting deck: Check
× Speaking: definitely too inconsistent
× Grammar: Did nothing last month, but I’m excited to continue.

THIS MONTH’S GOAL(s):

  • 20 new vocabulary cards a day (that’s 4 words, I’m using the 10k deck that’s here in the forum somewhere)
  • Read an article of NHK easy every weekday
  • Finish Genki I and buy Genki II
  • Talk to a native speaker at least 3 times a week
  • Write in my Japanese diary every day (If there is something to write about)

:crabigator: RESOURCES

CURRENT JAPANESE RESOURCES: Anki ;Genki; NHK Easy; Tandem partners; WaniKani

  • FAVE: Anki
  • LEAST FAVE: Genki

TRY NEW RESOURCE: Need something better for listening

:crabigator: JAPANESE ABILITY

CURRENT JAPANESE WEAKNESS: Mostly listening and speaking

HOW I WILL IMPROVE ABOVE: Improve my vocabulary and practice a lot

:crabigator: HELPING OTHERS

TIP/ADVICE FOR LEARNING JAPANESE: Speaking is the most important aspect of fluency (at least for most learners). Practice speaking as early and as much as possible. Don’t be me.

PROGRESS POST #6: September 2017

:crabigator: WANIKANI

CURRENT WANIKANI LEVEL: 34

IN ONE MONTH I HOPE TO BE LEVEL… 35

:crabigator: GOALS

LAST MONTH’S GOAL REPORT: For detailed descriptions see previous post.

○ Level: Check
○ Vocabulary: Yes
○ Reading: I think so
○ Grammar: Indeed
○ Speaking: Sounds about right
× Writing: Not good

THIS MONTH’S GOAL(s):

This month I’m starting to prioritise my learning. The priorities for the next 2 months will be Speaking, Vocabulary and Grammar.

Prioritised goals:

  • Talk to native speakers in real time, for example on skype. I don’t know how much time I will have, so for now I’ll say three times a week.
  • Raise my daily vocabulary learning from 20 new cards to 30 new cards (=6 words)
  • Finish chapter 19 of GenkiⅡ. (Thats a little over half way)

Non-prioritised goals:

  • continue to practice handwriting every day
  • Practice reading or listening when I have nothing to do

:crabigator: RESOURCES

CURRENT JAPANESE RESOURCES: Anki ;Genki; Netflix shows; NHK Easy; Tandem partners; WaniKani

  • FAVE: Anki
  • LEAST FAVE: Genki

TRY NEW RESOURCE: No need

:crabigator: JAPANESE ABILITY

CURRENT JAPANESE WEAKNESS: Mostly listening and speaking

HOW I WILL IMPROVE ABOVE: Improve my vocabulary and practice a lot

Progress Post #2

WANIKANI

Current Level: 11

In One Month I Hope to be Level: 13

GOALS

Last month’s goal report: 1 level shy of my WK goal. I didn’t anticipate how much my holiday would slow me down! I also only wrote 2/6 pages in my Japanese journal. I’ll have to work harder this month, but I’m back at school now.

This month’s goal: Catch up on 日記 pages (4)

RESOURCES

  • Genki 1
  • WaniKani
  • Anki
  • Movies on online streaming service (hulu, netflix, kanopy)

JAPANESE ABILITY
Current Japanese Weakness: Everything (still). My kanij recognition is lower than I’d like, especially for kanji in atypical/handwriting fonts. Also speaking in particular.
How I will improve: I added the Jitai (?) code to my browser, which will mix up the fonts on my reviews. I’m also doing more handwriting practice. As for speaking, now that I’m back in class, I have more people to speak to (including my friends from Japanese class). Right now, I’m more focused on sentence formation than pitch/accent, so I’m not particular about whether my conversation partners are native speakers.

TIP/ADVICE FOR LEARNING JAPANESE:
You’re asking me?

Oops, a little bit late

PROGRESS POST #5

WANIKANI

CURRENT WANIKANI LEVEL: 19 [+]

IN ONE MONTH I HOPE TO BE LEVEL… 22

GOALS

LAST MONTH’S GOAL REPORT: Well, I did go slower and I’m more than enjoying wanikani again. I didn’t remember that I set that as a goal, but it turns out I did what I intended:D [+]

THIS MONTH GOAL: Do lessons as you go, maybe continue Genki 2 finally, but now I’m kind of relaxing than learning. I need my strength back

RESOURCES
Wk mostly, I gave up Anki because I had too many resources. I write 1st and 2nd grade kanji in one japanese game on android, but I don’t remember the name of it. I ‘need’ to do grammar but not now

TIP/ADVICE FOR LEARNING JAPANESE:
This is an experience for your whole life, so don’t rush. Like me. Please:D

WANIKANI
CURRENT WANIKANI LEVEL: 8

IN ONE MONTH I HOPE TO BE LEVEL: 13

GOALS
LAST MONTH’S GOAL REPORT: N/A

THIS MONTH’S GOAL(S):

  • work through the latter half of Genki I
  • start journaling in Japanese
  • actually use Satori Reader

RESOURCES
CURRENT JAPANESE RESOURCES (other than WaniKani):

  • Satori Reader
  • imported games (mainly otoge, but I have a couple of others fully in Japanese as well)
  • Genki I
  • Japanese Sentence Patterns for Effective Communication

FAVE: Wanikani, if that counts (if not, probably games, lol)
LEAST FAVE: Genki I
TRY NEW RESOURCE: I have some volumes of older manga (Inuyasha, Fushigi Yuugi, etc) from a secondhand store that I’d like to try reading through. Also, if I can overcome my anxiety about it, HelloTalk.

JAPANESE ABILITY

CURRENT JAPANESE WEAKNESS: Producing “original” Japanese speech and text. My comprehension is good; production…not so much.

HOW I WILL IMPROVE ABOVE: By actually working on my weaknesses. For now, that’ll be through journaling, but like I said above, hopefully I can get up the gumption to try HelloTalk as well.

HELPING OTHERS
TIP/ADVICE FOR LEARNING JAPANESE: Keep at it, and don’t only focus on improving things you already comprehend without trouble. Try to pinpoint your weaknesses and spend more time on those.

#PROGRESS POST #2

#WANIKANI
CURRENT WANIKANI LEVEL: 13

IN ONE MONTH I HOPE TO BE LEVEL… 17

I’ve been doing a level every 7 days pretty comfortable. Also, I just registered for the JLPT N4 in December, which means I’ll know 97% of the JLPT N4 Kanji 2 months in advance

#GOALS
LAST MONTH’S GOAL REPORT:

=> I reached lvl 13 like I wanted, 1 day before the end of the month. :white_check_mark:
=> I used KW every single day, just like I use WK. I’m pretty satisfied with this. At the beginning of August I was delayed 6 levels on KW compared to WK, but now I only have 2 levels to catch up. :white_check_mark:
=> Managed to continue talking every day with 2 Japanese natives  :white_check_mark:
=> Only posted 1 moment out of 5 on HelloTalk this past month. It was a success though: 72 likes and 26 comments :tada::scream: :white_check_mark:
=> Had lots of fun studying Japanese  :white_check_mark:

=> Failed to watch every video of Japanese Ammo with Misa. I lost half of my notes at the beginning of this month and got a little disappointed. Only returned to study grammar during the 2nd half of August. :x:
=> I completely failed with Tae Kim’s Grammar Guide. Like I said above, I wasted the first half of August and didn’t study any grammar. :x:
=> I completely failed to learn about Anki and use it. :x:
=> Didn’t post anything on Social Media about health advice this past month, which means that I didn’t add JP text to it either. This is something that I want to fix. However, I’m focusing more on another project right now. After I get that managed, I’ll be back to Social Media. :x:
=> Didn’t use Houhou at all. :x:

THIS MONTH’S GOAL:

=> For grammar, I’ll focus on completing the 14 videos (+ 6 video bonus) that I have left from Japanese Ammo with Misa.
=> After that, I’ll go back to using the Tae Kim’s Grammar Guide. I divided it by 51 lessons and I’ll do a lesson a day. Since this will be conjugated with Japanese Ammo’s videos for now, for the month of September doing 15 of these lessons is a good goal
=> I intend to reach lvl 17 on WK (589 Kanji + 97% N4 JLPT ✓)
=> I still have 2 levels left to unlock on KW. This month will definitely be easier in terms of KW usage, since I unlocked 4 levels + 4 levels (that I eventually leveled up on WK) last month.
=> Learn how decks work on Anki. I need to learn this to compensate my lack of vocab outside WK + it will also help me with some stuff in the University.
=> Currently having 2 close friendships on HelloTalk. I want to continue talking with both of them every day and go back to answer some people that were “left behind”. [Same goal as last month]
=> Post at least 3 moments on HelloTalk in JP/ENG/PT. That makes 1 every 10 days.
=> Don’t do more than what’s written in here for the sake of moving faster. I might burn out if I increase all this learning even more.
=> Continue learning about Japanese culture: watch videos, read about it, talk about it. Appreciate everything. This is my own special journey. I must enjoy it.

#RESOURCES
CURRENT JAPANESE RESOURCES:

WaniKani for Kanji
KaniWani to complement with WaniKani.
Anki for vocab outside WK.
Japanese Ammo with Misa for grammar.
Tae Kim’s Grammar Guide for grammar.
HelloTalk for exchanging messages with my language partners.
Youtube channels like Abroad in Japan, Asian Boss, Internationally ME, Rachel and Jun, Sharla in Japan, That Japanese Man Yuta and SherryBerry in Ehime for learning about Japan.

  • FAVE: WK (Kanji was a serious problem for a while - WK is fixing me that very easily :slightly_smiling_face:)
  • LEAST FAVE: Anki (why: I don’t know how to work with it efficiently)

TRY NEW RESOURCE(S):

I seriously need to make Anki a habit! D:

#JAPANESE ABILITY
CURRENT JAPANESE WEAKNESS: Vocab.

HOW I WILL IMPROVE ABOVE: Continue with WK and using Anki for the vocab outside WK.
#HELPING OTHERS

“Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when you woke up. Discharge your duties faithfully and well. Step by step you get ahead, but not necessarily in fast spurts. But you build discipline by preparing for fast spurts… Slug it out one inch at a time, day by day. At the end of the day–if you live long enough–most people get what they deserve.” - Charlie Munger

Current Level: 13 (yes!! I made it!)

In One Month I Hope to be Level: 16

GOALS

Last month’s goal report: Eh, I’m getting there. Uni is kicking my butt right now so I think it’s time to tone it down with Japanese and focus on my other classes (midterms week, ugh.) At least I made my WK goal!

This month’s goal: Read 節分の鬼 in Let’s Read Japanese and study the vocabulary and grammar stuff I don’t recognize.

RESOURCES

  • Genki 1
  • WaniKani
  • Anki
  • Movies on online streaming service (hulu, netflix, kanopy)
  • Let’s Read Japanese (I just got Vol. 1 of this series and it’s going pretty well so far. The level I’m at in Genki, I don’t get to use as much vocab and kanji as I learn in WK, so it’s good to put some of that into practice).

JAPANESE ABILITY
Current Japanese Weakness: Trying to make sentences, either speaking or writing. Also listening recognition.
How I will improve: Watch more Terrace House, start going to the Japanese speakers’ meetup in town. Continue writing 日記
