幸色のワンルーム (Sachiiro no One Room) Miscellaneous (Beginner Level) Book Club

Somehow or other, I’ve managed to complete 22 volumes. Some were longer (the Sailormoon ones could be over 350 pages), and some were short ones (I think Whisper of the Heart was around 180). And some are just plain easy (I almost read then entirety of それでも歩は寄せてくる volume 1 in a single reading session!)

I was originally reading a little each day from multiple books, spreading each book over the week. This was great because I could read a little from a more difficult manga, then switch to an easier manga. It also meant I didn’t have a week between reading to forget what’s going on. But it was also a lot more difficult for me to manage. Having a simple “read one chapter per day” is easier for me to manage.

That one was such a rare find because it works so well for easing a reader into Japanese grammar. I haven’t been able to find anything quite like it.

Are you looking for something more advanced than, say, よつばと! is? Or have you not read that series to judge by?

I didn’t realize Sailormoon was so long! I do have それでも歩は寄せてくる, so maybe I’ll start that one soon! I also haven’t read よつばと!Though I know that is usually one of the first manga people read  . It makes sense that I haven’t been able to find anything else like レンタルおにいちゃん then. I wasn’t sure if it was rare, or if I was just not looking in the right places. Thanks!!

よつばと! is one of those ones that’s hard to get into until you get used to casual language. (This is where レンタルおにいちゃん is easier to get into, I think.) Once you make it through the first two volumes of よつばと!, it gets easier.

One thing that よつばと! has is that some chapters are really easy, but the some end up being really difficult as they focus a bit on grown-ups talking. I found 三ツ星カラーズ to be a nice alternative to よつばと! as it’s similar in difficulty, except is lacks the kind of “very easy” and “very hard” chapters that よつばと! has.

Thanks you so much for the recommendation! I looked up 三ツ星カラーズ and it seems like I will like it more than よつばと!So I’m adding it to my reading list. I really appreciate your help!

I just uploaded the vocab sheet. I’m hoping to at least get chapter 1 filled in by the time we start reading!

I started on the vocab sheet and I’ve got most of the first panel entered. I’m adding all words except those which are nearly impossible to have missed if you’ve learned enough grammar to consider reading native material. Words like する or 行くbut if you guys would like to have those words in the list, I can change my approach.

I know the rules say to include only the definitions relevant to the sentence they appear in, but I think seeing multiple definitions is helpful in working out the nuance of a word. So I’m wondering what you guys think. Would you rather keep to only the most relevant definitions or include some which may help clarify a word’s meaning?

I don’t use vocabulary lists, but I do make sentence cards in Anki.

For me personally, I aim to have only the definition relevant to the sentence it’s used in. If I see a word I know used in a way I don’t know, I can make a separate sentence card for it. (Well, Anki doesn’t like having two cards for the same word, so thankfully I haven’t actually encountered this situation yet…)

Thanks for already adding to the list! I think leaving out words like する and 行く is totally fine. If there’s a word you don’t include, but someone else thinks it’ll be useful to add they can add it when they encounter it.
I also tend to just add the definition that fits the current context, but if you think there is another definition or two that could help with overall understanding of the word. I think it would be okay to add them, but maybe in parentheses next to the main definition. Alternatively, I would also be totally okay with adding an additional column where we can put other important definitions of the word. That way it would be a little separated, but there for people who might want it. I just copied the document format and rules used by other book clubs, so I’m alright with adjusting some stuff.

I am planning on making the chapter discussion post in the next couple days and was wondering if anyone had preferences? I was thinking of doing a thread per chapter as opposed to doing two threads per chapter to match up with the reading schedule, but if people would prefer the threads to match up better with the schedule I can just do a part 1 and part 2 thread per chapter. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I think one per chapter makes sense but I don’t feel strongly either way. Sorry I didn’t respond sooner. The last few weeks have been super busy for me but I should be good to go now.

Alright I will plan to go with one thread per chapter! Also, no worries I’m kind of in the same boat so I won’t be getting the thread up till tomorrow and plan to start reading tomorrow or Friday

I have made a discussion thread for chapter 1. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: It can be accessed by clicking on the hyperlink in the schedule. I look forward to reading with everyone!

I’ve been eyeing this thread for a while now, going back and forth on whether I want to read this or not…but I finally bought the first volume on Bookwalker, count me in! The fact that the ebook version has decent quality is what finally convinced me, since I’m trying to spend less money on paperbacks but the last digital manga I read just gave me a headache because of how blurry it was

Welcome to the club! The schedule at the top has links to our discussion threads. We just started chapter two, but are spreading each chapter over two weeks, so hopefully it won’t be too hard to catch up! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
