Discussion Guidelines

Hidden here, you know the drill

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Week 7

The cover for this week is so deceptive. I was sure that it meant that Maru and same-face-guy (forgot the name) would meet now. Sure we did get some information, Maru’s goal is to be looking for same-face-guy, but no meeting and wasn’t expecting that ending at all!

Found this manga very intriguing, will definitely be reading more of it in the future!

That cover page is already intriguing… can’t wait to dive in later

Week 7

Same, that was quite sneaky from the author. This went in a completely different direction I was imagining, I was thinking (even judging from the cover) that Maru and Kiru would reach Heaven and break inside, but it seems to be a more long-term objective. Still, this chapter had lots of interesting tidbits and potential foreshadowing.

  • So Maru has to deliver the “medicine” to the boy with the same face as his… that thing is going to be anything but medicine, I think.
  • I’m not sure how to interpret the “I have a woman’s body but my mind is a man’s” comment. Is it meant to be just a “btw I’m trans” comment said in the usual roundabout “can’t speak of such things directly” Japanese way, or is it meant to be literal? There was that flashback of Kiru in a hospital bed a couple chapters ago with his body completely bandaged…
This does put his reaction to a couple things in the past chapters in a new light (like looking at his own body in the hot springs chapter), and the usage of 僕 was also a hint too…
  • There was that interesting comment of the “can’t read the air” guy about the racer woman who looks like Kiru that went mad after she ran over her little brother… I think Kiru’s reaction to that combined with the end of chapter plot twist is really interesting. Kiru looked uncomfortable, and really wanted to deny the resemblance… But then racer-otaku gives them useful information, he shakes his hand and racer otaku says “wow maybe that really was her”… Is Kiru the little brother? Did his mind get body swapped in the sister’s body as a way to save him? I have no idea how deep I have to read into things lol

Anyway, really cool manga! Some parts were a bit challenging and I admittedly reread a couple of scenes in English to make sure I understood all the details, but other than that it was quite manageable. This really feels like the kind of manga where you get a big bonus on re-reads after knowing some plot twists… And there don’t seem to be too many volumes to catch up to so I think an offshoot club could continue even at a somewhat leisurely pace without fear of never catching up to the backlog.

Week 7

This chapter took me forever. :sob: Just constant lookups. Don’t think I should’ve made it part of my readathon.

I’m assuming full-on brain transplant for Kiruko. The timing of introducing a potential body donor in the same chapter just seems too perfect.

I’m glad nothing bad happened to tomato heaven. It was reminding me so much of that trope in the Walking Dead et al where the protags find a perfect happy settlement to get comfortable in only for it to be ripped away from them. I do wonder if those characters reappear later on, but…

I don’t have the bandwidth for a 13-volume series right now, so I don’t plan to continue beyond this. Thanks @Akashelia for running the club!

I’m keen to continue; a lot of my long running series are now just waiting for new volumes, a couple of series are complete, and I’m about to finish ふたつのスピカ in another 2 volumes.

If it were like 5 volumes I totally would!

I was fully expecting them to discover some sinister underside of Tomato Heaven… but no, they just left again.

Same, for me this chapter was by far the hardest in the volume

I’m up for continuing, I’ve gotten into the habit of this being my Saturday morning read.

Week 7

My theory that Kiruko was actually a man was correct! @Sisthra’s theory about him being the little brother sounds very plausible, although that would make the mirror kissing scene SUPER weird in retrospect. Based on some of the other stuff in this manga though, I wouldn’t put it past this story to do that.

Maru having a doppelganger makes me wonder if the facility we’ve seen is in the past, and those kids are around Maru’s age now, or if it’s the present, and he’s going to run into a kid with his face.

This is a pretty interesting story, but I’m not sure if I would continue with an offshoot.

First IMC that I finish (having watched the anime definitely helped). I’d love to continue reading it, I hope I can keep up.
Thanks @Akashelia for organizing it!!

Week 7

Hah, me too. I already knew the story from the anime, but couldn’t remember the part about Tomato Heaven, so I was half-expecting it to go the way of the arc with the suspiciously cheap inn. But I guess it was really just a bunch of innocent stoner farmers. Refreshing.
