Discussion Guidelines

Hidden here, you know the drill

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Week 4

Interesting worldbuilding, but I could’ve done without the fanservice. Seems like Maru and Kiruko haven’t been traveling together for long at all. I still can’t get much of a grip on how long it’s been since society collapsed. They talk about Kiruko being a city girl, but does that mean a modern-day city or just whatever passes for one in the wasteland? And I really didn’t expect people to still value paper money at all.

I did not trust that 女将 (new word for me) for a second. She gave off huge Circe in the Odyssey vibes. And that incest conversation… Yikes. It did answer the question I’ve been wondering about their relationship, though.

The panel depicting Kiruko’s drug-induced sleep paralysis as her in a hospital bed really stuck with me. It must mean something…

More precisely, she’s from Tokyo. They’re somewhere in the western half of Tokyo when we first meet them - there’s a sign at the start of chapter 2 pointing the way to Hachioji. Exactly what state central Tokyo is currently in remains to be seen, though.

Week 4

Boy, this manga sure likes to leer at its female characters. Regarding Kiruko seemingly being attracted to herself, could it be a switched bodies type of situation? Maybe the person in her body is the guy in the photo that she’s looking for, and the real Kiruko is in that guy’s body?

When they were attacked by the middle-aged men, she said she was a man. Could it have been the truth passed off as a joke? She also uses a male first-person pronoun (although that’s common in manga).

I also thought she looked similar to Mimihime. Could the stuff with the kids be in the past, and the stuff with Kiruko and Maru be the present? Although there aren’t any kids that look like the guy she’s looking for.

Chapter 4

Same as everyone, could do with less (as in zero) fan service, but otherwise liking it so far! Getting a bit more info here, interesting that Kiruko is a bodyguard (she did mention it before I think).

Was wondering that too.

Not sure what is happening in this panel.
Are we supposed to understand that Kiruko calls herself that because of the Kill-gun? Is that Maru realizing that?

Other way around. She calls it キルコ…うせん because her name is キルコ. He’s just considering her pun with far too much seriousness.

Ah okay. Thought that they could be more to the name too, it could be キルコ = Kill子

Week 4

Is she looking for him though, or is Maru?

I’m reading this fairly quickly but without much brain power to think about what’s actually going on. The back of his sweater seems like it might mean something though?

Edit - realised I was wrong about my first statement, just re-read that section. It was Maru looking for them.
